Pastor’s Corner - Fr. Bernardin Mugabo

Please join us in praying the Rosary and other pray-ers every weekday before the 8:30 a.m. Mass (starting at 8 a.m.), Saturday after the 8:30 a.m. Mass, and Sun-day after the 8:00 a.m. Mass. Married Couples: Chr ist the King Passionist Center

has a series of lectures and other events focusing on young (and young at heart) married couples. They meet the 3rd Sunday of the Month except in the Summer. An amazing teacher of mine, John Hamlon will be presenting a lecture on John Paul II Theology of the Body on January 20th. John lives what he teaches. He is also a great presenter adding stories in his lecture to display his humor. If you get a chance, ask him to tell a dog story. They were my favorites. I highly recommend this class. Deacon Jack

Do you have a special intention for which you are praying? The Pilgrim Virgin Mary statue is available to take home with you for a week or two. A special prayer booklet comes with the statue. Sign up in the chapel or call Jackie at 481-0398

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time -January 20, 2019 Nations shall behold your vindication, and all the kings your glory. — 1saiah 62:2

Please pray for the repose of the soul of par ishioner Sharon Gruneisen, who passed away. Her funeral Mass will be at Calvary Cemetery on Saturday, February 16th at 11:30 a.m.

46th Anniversary of Roe versus Wade: This hor r ible tragedy fell on our country on January 22, 1973, with a 7-to-2 majority vote in favor of Roe by the Supreme Court. Since this legalization of abortion, our country has lost over 70 million babies in their mother’s womb, the safest place possible. This nightmare will continue until the legalization of abortion is ended. Thank God the battle is not over yet by the fact so many Catholics mixed with Protestants, and people of other religions went to Walk for Life in Washington D.C. on Saturday, January 19th. It is a sign that people are regretting the mistakes done and are willing to make changes. The following Saturday, on January 26th, there will be a Walk for Life in San Francisco. The good news is that our parish has a bus that will be leaving our parking lot to San Francisco with over 50 people. We will meet with so many others who will be coming from many areas around the state of California and other neighboring states as well. To be a Christian is to make a choice; to love what Jesus loves and to hate what Jesus hates. Jesus doesn’t like abortion. You shall not kill is one of the 10 Commandments of God and they will never be changed. Those who support it or do it are putting their eternal salvation in grave danger. Yes, God is merciful but He is also just. He expects all of us to change ASAP, I thank God so much for those men and women who are willing to be the voice of voiceless; those who are willing to stand for God no matter how comfortable or uncomfortable that may be. Prayer is a powerful arm; we need to pray so that all abortion places may close for good. Dear Parishioners, these unborn babies are not our enemies. They are our brothers and sisters. They were conceived in God’s plan and they have a destiny. Some of them may be our military men and women to protect and defend us, police men and women who protect us from the law-breakers, judges, doctors, teachers, architects, dancers, cookers, nurses, firefighters, mechanics to fix your car if broken, even priests, monks or any kind of leader to help us. Killing them, we are killing ourselves and our future. We need to stop these pro-death activities. They are demoniac and no good person or religious man or woman should excuse himself/herself for taking lives of innocent babies. Life is a gift from God, and should be protected no matter what, from conception to natural death. God bless, Father Bernardin MUGABO

SVdP - Thanks to the generous parishioners of St. John’s, our shelves are full with peanut butter and jelly. In December the St. Vincent de Paul food closet distributed food to 141 households, which included 299 adults, 86 children and 9 infants. And because of Christmas the food closet was only open three Wednesdays! Would you like to be part of a team that makes home visits? It’s a big part of what St. Vincent de Paul does…visiting people who reach out for help with rent and utilities. If that sounds like something you’d like to do but need more information, contact Cynthia Zeller at 916-320-6838. Please leave any donations at the church’s “GIVING WING”, before or after any weekend Mass. There is a sign that directs you to the north end of the narthex or an usher will be happy to help you. Your generosity is always appreciated and never taken for granted. God bless you!

Another New-Year’s Prayer: “God of all time – we place the days and months of the new year into your hands. Fill our days with the blessings of family, friendship, laughter and love. Show us ways to spend our time serving your children in need. Help us remember to take time to read your Word and to talk with you in prayer. Amen.” (RCL / Benziger) Pope Francis’ January intention: “That young people, especially in Latin America, follow the example of Mary and respond to the call of the Lord to communicate the joy of the Gospel to the world.”

A Farewell - I have been privileged to serve in the Music Ministry at St. John’s Church for over 19 years, and now it is the right time for me to retire from my position. My last day serving will be at the 10am Mass on Sunday, January 20th. I wish to thank the people of St. John’s for their sustaining support, encouragement and kindness throughout the years. I especially wish to thank the very talented people that have served in the Music Ministry for their constant dedication, for so generously giving of their time, and for sharing with us the precious gift of music that God has given them. They are incredible servants of God and His People here at St. John’s! And . . . I give the highest praise and thanks to Our Lord for His Providence leading me here those many years ago. My time at St. John’s Church has truly been one of the greatest blessings of my life! Fondly, Roseann Garthwait Director of Music and Liturgy
