Fr. Bernardin's Joke of the Week

Jesus and Satan were having an ongoing argument about who was better on his computer. They had been going at it for days, and God [the Father] was tired of hearing all of the bickering. Finally God said, “Cool it. I am going to set up a test that will run two hours and I will judge who does the better job.” So down Satan and Jesus sat at the keyboards and typed away. They moused. They did spread-sheets. They wrote reports. They sent faxes. They sent e-mail. They sent out e-mail with attach-ments. They downloaded. They did some genealogy reports. They made cards. They did every known job. But ten minutes before their time was up, lightning suddenly flashed across the sky, thunder rolled, the rain poured and, of course, the electricity went off. Satan stared at his blank screen and screamed every curse word known in the underworld. Jesus just sighed. The electricity finally flickered back on, and each of them restarted their computers. Satan started searching frantically, screaming “It’s gone! It’s all gone! I lost everything when the power went out!” Meanwhile, Jesus quietly started printing out all of His files from the past two hours. Satan observed this and became irate. “Wait! He cheated, how did He do it?” God shrugged and said, “Jesus saves.”

PRAY THE 54 DAY MIRACLE NOVENA (August 15 – October 7, 2020) Dear Parishioners, our country which used to be very peaceful and loving is changing dramatically towards the worse. Immediately after the horrible death of George Floyd, I remember when the rioters and protesters were in Sacramento and many other areas around the country; everybody was on high alert because of violent demon-strations, lootings, shootings, burning police cars, and even hurting the police themselves. I remember Deacon Keith Johnson called me saying that looters were heading to Carmichael and I should be on alert. I thank God they didn’t show up here at the Church, but they looted a jewelry store nearby in Carmichael. This evil was fol-lowed by destroying statues of Saint Junipero Serra, Saint Columbus and even some statues of the Blessed Vir-gin Mary as well. As if this is not enough, nowadays some churches have been burnt in the country. Who knows what will follow? Maybe acting like terrorists, destroying churches and the people within. Several months later, the nightmare is not over yet, I saw the news last night on August 10th at Channel 13 from 10:00 pm to 11:00 pm, how Chicago was looted, buildings destroyed and mess everywhere; this reminded me of the chaos I saw in my old home country of Rwanda during the war.

The shocking news is that some leaders, for whatever reason, say that it is peaceful protests and they want to defund the police. I am sure they do so in as much as their own properties are safe from looters. If these build-ing looted were their own properties and their own lives were in danger, they would change their words. Jesus reminds us, in the Golden Rule to do to others whatever we would like them to do to us. This evil should be condemned by every person, particularly leaders voted in to protect peace and reinforce the law. To this, you add COVID-19 which stopped all businesses, canceled schooling, etc., thus creating more chaos and uncertain-ty.

What should we do to save our country? As Catholics, we need to turn to God and ask for His intervention on our behalf. It is for our sake, for the sake of our families, our neighbors and our country. The Bible tells us that God does answer our prayers, but we need to ask.

Two priests, Father Tony Blount, vicar general of the Society of Our Lady, (S.O.L.T) community and Father James Blount (two brothers) put together a 54 – day Novena from August 15 ( Feast of Our Lady of Assumption) through October 7, 2020 (Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary/Victory of Our Lady at Lepanto). The Battle of Lepanto was a naval engagement that took place on October 7, 1571 when a fleet of the Holy League, a coalition of European Catholic states arranged by Pope Pius V, inflicted a major defeat on the fleet of the Ot-toman Empire in the Gulf of Patras. This Rosary Novena is available at www.queenofpeacemedia.com or on Flocknotes (please see Brochure on Page 5).

Dear Parishioners, we all need to get involved. The Blessed Virgin Mary calls to pray the Rosary. The Rosary is a chain that chains the devil. The praying of the Rosary saved Europe; the praying of the Rosary can save our country. “If you pray and fast, you can stop wars and natural disasters.” said the Queen of Peace in Medjugor-je.

“Whoever desires to obtain favors from me should make three novenas of the prayers of the Rosary in petition, and three novenas in thanksgiving.” Queen of the Holy Rosary to Fortuna Agrelli. (October 13, 1884)

Reading 2 Brothers and sisters: I speak the truth in Christ, I do not lie; my conscience joins with the Holy Spirit in bearing me witness that I have great sorrow and constant anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my own people, my kindred according to the flesh. They are Israelites; theirs the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; theirs the patri-archs, and from them, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.

August 16, 2020 Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reading 1 Is 56:1, 6–7 Thus says the Lord: Observe what is right, do what is just; for my salvation is about to come, my justice, about to be revealed. The foreigners who join themselves to the Lord, ministering to him, loving the name of the Lord, and becoming his servants— all who keep the sabbath free from profanation and hold to my covenant, them I will bring to my holy mountain and make joyful in my house of prayer; their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be acceptable on my altar, for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples. Responsorial Psalm Ps 67:2–3, 5, 6, 8 R. (4) O God, let all the nations praise you! May God have pity on us and bless us; may he let his face shine upon us. So may your way be known upon earth; among all nations, your salvation. R. O God, let all the nations praise you! May the nations be glad and exult because you rule the peoples in equity; the nations on the earth you guide. R. O God, let all the nations praise you! May the peoples praise you, O God; may all the peoples praise you! May God bless us, and may all the ends of the earth fear him! R. O God, let all the nations praise you!

Reading 2 Rom 11:13–15, 29–32 Brothers and sisters: I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I glory in my ministry in order to make my race jealous and thus save some of them. For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead? For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable. Just as you once disobeyed God but have now received mercy because of their disobedience, so they have now diso-beyed in order that, by virtue of the mercy shown to you, they too may now receive mercy. For God delivered all to disobedience, that he might have mercy upon all.

Gospel Mt 15:21–28 At that time, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district came and called out, “Have pity on me, Lord, Son of Da-vid! My daughter is tormented by a demon.” But Jesus did not say a word in answer to her. Jesus’ disciples came and asked him, “Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us.” He said in reply, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But the woman came and did Jesus homage, saying, “Lord, help me.” He said in reply, “It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs.” She said, “Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.” Then Jesus said to her in reply, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And the woman’s daughter was healed from that hour. Deacon Jack’s Homily (August 16, 2020)

When you first read the Gospel today, it seems like we are seeing a different side of Jesus. For people who are crying out for help, Je-sus is always the model of kindness. Sure, He can get angry; remember the money changers in the Temple? He will also call out peo-ple who say one thing but mean another as He did several times to the Pharisees - you brood of Vipers, but someone begging for mercy is looked upon with understanding.

Well she is from Canaan you know, one of those people who worshipped idols and performed human sacrifices, she is not one of “us”. But neither was the Roman Centurion who was treated with mercy so why do you think Jesus ignores and rebukes this woman in need? She calls out “Have pity on me, Lord, son of David. My daughter is tormented by a demon” and Jesus just seems to ignore her call.

Strange.

Addressing Jesus as Son of David indicates this Canaanite woman knows of Jesus, she has addressed Him as the long-awaited deliver-er. The other title – Lord, was used to describe one who protects and provides and also was used as a name for God. This woman certainly has respect for Our Lord. Well, maybe Jesus couldn’t hear her, that could explain why Jesus was silent. Yet the disciples heard her because they asked Jesus to send her away. This time our Lord seems to agree with them – Jesus says I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.

The Canaanites were not part of Israel, they were living in the land, the Promised Land, and were conquered by Israel. “Those people” worshipped a false god Baal so Israel would refer to Canaanites as dogs. In ancient Israel, you were either a Jew or you were a Gentile – a member of the chosen ones or one of those people. Is Jesus really not intending to help her because she isn’t “one of us”?

The woman is not deterred by their suggestion and she approaches Jesus – without being summoned – that is very bold. She pays Je-sus homage probably kneeling before Jesus like the Samaritan leper who was cleansed when he came back to thank Jesus. Her sec-

ond request is - Lord, help me.

Jesus’ merciful heart will eventually grant her request but His response is shocking. You must remember Jesus’ answer –“It is not right

to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs”.

Wow, that is cold.

How many here would feel insulted, how many would get angry, how many would get up and just walk away by that remark? Could this woman have done something so wrong that a rebuke is all she will receive to her pleas?

Jesus didn’t treat people asking for help with contempt, even those who were sinners. He ate with sinners, he didn’t condemn the wom-an caught in adultery. So what is going on here?

In some of my other homilies, I said that when things in scripture just don’t look right on the surface, you might try looking at different motivations, different angles. Sometimes those who seem to just a minor part of a story are actually the focus.

What if the main characters in this story are Jesus and the disciples, and by inference, Jesus and us? Can this story be about Jesus showing us how He has seen the disciples act, how He has seen us judging or treating some of those people? Did He use an imitation of their prejudice and the cutting words of her third response to show them how they were wrong to think God’s mercy did not extend to anyone with faith, Jew or Gentile?

The woman certainly has the virtue of perseverance; she isn’t deterred and asks Jesus a third time “Please Lord, even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table” and her daughter is healed. Mercy and grace are not just for Israel. Being a Jew or Genti le is not the

determining factor; following our Lord and believing in Him are. This is the lesson to the Apostles, the lesson for us.

Saint Paul received much criticism and scorn for preaching and ministering to the Gentiles. In the second reading today, St Paul saw the prejudice of his people and spoke of the glory in his ministry as Apostle to the Gentiles to try and change their attitudes. In contrast, I do not think the Jesus changed his mind here. I would compare this encounter with the woman at the well where Jesus knew everything about someone He had just met. Impossible for us but Jesus is God. Jesus selected her for this lesson knowing that she is a tough,

persistent, faithful person who would not run away by harsh words when calling in faith and need.

This scene should give us pause to examine our own concepts of who we would welcome to our parish. You never know if the person standing next to you in the grocery store, in line for food at our food locker or from a different country is actually searching for answers that our faith, our trust in Jesus can answer. Do we consider people of a certain faith background, of a certain ethnic background, of a certain way of life, of a certain political belief, of a different economic status beyond God’s forgiveness, mercy and grace? Would we react the same as the Apostles – send them away, I don’t want them to be near me?

The rejection of members of “those people” when they have turned to Jesus is rejection of Jesus Himself, for St. Paul says today “God has mercy on all.” The world is accelerating polarization of people against each other. We close our minds assigning all sorts of prob-lems or evils that those outside will bring in instead of looking to understand why and how they are asking for help. We need to forgive and let go of prejudice. We are the Catholic Church, the universal church that draws everyone to our Lord. Go home and read the first reading. Isiah 56.

It is our responsibility to be the light that is shining in the darkness welcoming everyone so our Parish is like the one in the first reading today, called a house of prayer for all peoples.

Personal Note: By now, I’m sure that most of you know that I’ve retired as Director/Coordinator of Religious-Education at SJE Par-ish. Who will take my place? Ask Fr. Bernardin about that! How-ever, I will be volunteering & be around to see the children through on receiving their sacraments. I’ve been asked if I’m re-turning to Ireland permanently… The answer to that question is: There are many branches of Sisters of Mercy. For example: Sisters of Mercy of Ireland (who opened & operated SJE School for many years.) Sisters of Mercy of England, Sisters of Mercy of South-Africa, Sisters of Mercy of Australia and Sisters of Mercy of the Americas. Even though I was born & raised in Ireland – I belong to the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas (who had a recruiting house in my home parish in Ireland.) So, the shortest answer is: No, I will not be returning to Ireland permanently. Again, thanks to each and all of you for the many blessings which I experienced during my ministry years here at SJE.

God bless & guide your/our week!
