MEETINGS AND ACTIVITIES FOR THIS WEEK It is great news that we are now beginning to offer public celebrations of the Mass in some areas of our diocese. While we would like to join together as quickly as possible, we must proceed cautiously, consistent with guidance from state and local officials and health experts, in an effort to continue protecting the health and safety of parishioners, volunteers, staff, clergy and all who serve throughout the Diocese.

As we move forward, portions of the Diocese will reopen at different times as the commonwealth takes a regional approach to Phase One of re-opening.

Governor Ralph Northam originally announced that many areas of the commonwealth will enter Phase One of re-opening on May 15. At the request of local officials in Northern Virginia, the Governor has delayed Northern Virginia's reopening until at least May 29. The areas impacted are Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William Counties (and those cities located within that area) along with the City of Alexandria.

Parishes in Northern Virginia will not be able to celebrate public Masses at this time. However, all parishes in these Northern Virginia counties are permitted, but not mandated, to conduct Communion services, provided they are done in a manner consistent with existing social distancing protocols and health and safety guidelines. It is left to the prudential judgement of each pastor to determine if his parish is able to move in this direction. Please contact your local parish to see if it will be offering this liturgy.

Beginning May 16, parishes outside of Northern Virginia will be permitted, but not mandated, to resume public celebration of the Mass if the parish's pastor feels confident that Masses can be celebrated safely and in accordance with diocesan protocols. As such, parishioners outside of Northern Virginia should contact their parish to know if Masses will be publicly celebrated. During this time and due to capacity limits, please do not plan to attend liturgies at any parish other than your own. Parishes will continue to livestream the Mass to the best of their ability.

Guidelines for celebrating the Mass in Phase One include gathering at no more than 50% of the lowest occupancy of the room or facility, ensuring proper

Page 3: St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church › pdfs › Bulletins › 2020... · resume public celebration of the Mass if the parish's ... We will continue to keep the faithful updated

www.sje1.org

social distancing and diligently maintaining cleaning schedules. Additionally, all parishioners are expected to wear face coverings while on parish property. Due to social distancing requirements, not all parishes will be able to accommodate 50% capacity. Pastors of parishes outside of Northern Virginia have the discretion to decide if they can safely enter Phase One. For the health of our priests and in order to allow for thorough cleaning between Masses, not all parishes will maintain a normal Mass schedule.

Until further notice, I am continuing the dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation. I encourage those who are 65 years old or older, as well as those with underlying health conditions, to avoid gatherings of the general public and attending public liturgies.

In laying out the details of how we move forward, I will continue to be assisted by the Diocese of Arlington's Reintegration Working Group, which has been meeting regularly and is providing requirements, recommendations and resources to parishes as they begin to hold public Masses.

Key resources have been provided to help parishioners worship safely. In consultation with our pastors, I am confident we are responding to the best of our ability to the spiritual and physical well-being of the faithful and making appropriate progress in upholding with public health and federal, state and local directives. As this situation continues evolving, each phase will allow us the opportunity to take steps in a positive direction in unity and faith.

May we continue to pray for one another and all those who need our prayers, especially at this time.

We will continue to keep the faithful updated as the situation evolves.

Legion of Mary

Active membershipin the Legion of Mary normally involves attendance at weekly meetings and the performance of specified Spiritual Works of Mercy assigned by the Spiritual Director each week.

Unfortunately, because of the current Corona Virus crisis, meetings and works have been suspended indefinitely. Auxiliary membership is open however, to all through a specified Legion of Mary prayer regimen. This would be an excellent time to consider auxiliary membership. For more information, please contact Anne Tinsdale at [email protected] or 540-497-1781.

Sister Mary Bernard - Final Profession The trip is on!! We will be traveling to Ann Arbor, MI, to witness our own Sister Mary Bernard making her final profession of vows with the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist (https://www.sistersofmary.org/). God willing, this long anticipated final profession will occur on Wednesday, July 22, 2020. We will be departing St. John's for Ann Arbor following the 6:30 am Mass on Tuesday, July 21, and returning to St. John's late afternoon or evening on Thursday, July 23.

NOW is the time to reserve your space on the bus. Some of your fellow parishioners already have secured their seats, so don't delay too long! We have secured a block of hotel rooms near Ann Arbor for July 21 ($69 + tax), and Pittsburgh for July 22 ($75 + tax). The cost for a seat on the bus is $50/person ($200 max per family) for registered parishioners; $100/person for others. Please contact Deacon Don Libera ([email protected]) for more information, to secure your seat(s), and/or to add your name to our list of generous sponsors.

Pastor’s Corner Mass Schedule: The wonderful news is that our mass schedule has returned to normal for daily, and starting this weekend the 23rd and 24th, for Sunday mass. However, every other pew has been closed off and unrelated people are asked to continue to social distance (6 feet). This means that our normal 900 plus seat capacity will probably only accommodate 250 to 300.

The Work of the Knights Continues Your local Knights have been doing our best to continue the business of our Council and our charitable outreach in the community: -Due to the COVID-19 shutdowns, we were unable to collect and distribute our annual Feed the Hungry Easter Baskets. If you are facing financial challenges at this time, we will work with you confidentially on available options for support. If you have employment opportunities or jobs around your property that you can make available to your Brother Knights, we can put you in contact with those in need. 'The Gospel of life is for the whole of human society. To be actively pro-life is to contribute to the renewal of society through the promotion of the common good. It is impossible to further the common good without acknowledging and defending the right to life, upon which all the other inalienable rights of individuals are founded and from which they develop.' (Pope St. John Paul II, Gospel of Life #101)

Our Spiritually Adopted Babies Program will be ending this month & to celebrate, we will have a Parish Baby Shower (hopefully soon). Baby items/clothes/gift cards will be collected to distribute to Warrenton Pregnancy Center & Paul Stefan Foundation. (Gentle used maternity clothes also accepted.) These centers have been working overtime to support & supply needed items to their clients during the virus outbreak.
