Hitler said that the bigger the lie, the more people will believe it. This was at a time of war, but the determination to reject truth does not end with wars. In our own times, political correctness is a higher value than the truth. Many politicians are the masters of the lie, creating lies about their rival’s positions and then telling them over and over until a large group of people are convinced there must be some truth to the statements. Notice the nuance taking place with the upcoming holidays. To respect the concern of atheists, a lie is creeping in that negates God having anything to do with Thanksgiving. A similar effort is made to eliminate Christ from Christmas, transforming Christmas from the Birth of Christ to the Winter Holidays, out of concern for the sensibilities of non Christians.

The question is often asked: Does absolute truth exist? Some would claim that it does not. They state that truth is whatever a person makes it to be. Relativism is the only truth, promoted by many if not most of our institutions for higher education.

Absolute truth does exist. But where can it be found? Truth can be found in Jesus Christ. In today’s Gospel we hear Jesus saying to Pilate: “For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice." Jesus was proclaiming that the spiritual is infinitely more valuable than the physical, that the Kingdom of God was infinitely superior to anything man could create, and that those who were committed to God would recognize the voice of truth. Jesus is our King not just in a figurative sense, something we say but don’t really mean, but in the very reality that the Truth of God with all its ramification is the only truth that can be found in the world.

It is easy for anyone of us to decry the lies of other people, or of our society. It is far harder to recognize the times that we are the liars. But, again by the Grace of God, when we do come to the realization that there are many times that we are not living the whole truth, we can find freedom in Jesus Christ…our King. He frees us from lies. He gives us his truth. The Church year concludes by summarizing Jesus’ life on earth in one simple statement: “For this I was born and for this I came into the world: to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” May we have the courage to live the Truth of Christ, our King.

Let us celebrate the Thanksgiving Holiday with an attitude of true gratitude. God bestows upon us countless blessings, and for these, we are most thankful. May we continue to be graced and share these blessings in charity with one another. Happy Thanksgiving!

Jubilee Year of Mercy

As communicated by the Diocese of Wilmington Chancery Digest: “The Jubilee Year of Mercy was announced by Pope Francis as a year to be lived intensely in each diocese, allowing every person to encounter the mercy of God the Father through diligent labor for the Church’s mission there. The most evident sign of this pastoral care is the chance to open a Door of Mercy in every diocese. These doors, analogous to the Holy Doors of the Papal Basilicas in Rome, will permit even people who cannot travel to Rome to make a Jubilee pilgrimage. In our diocese, Doors of Mercy will be located at St. Elizabeth Church in Wilmington and Saints Peter and Paul Church in Easton.

After the solemn inauguration of the Holy Year—marked by the opening of the Holy Door of Saint Peter’s Basilica on December 8—all dioceses throughout the world will open their own Doors of Mercy in communion with the Church of Rome as part of the Eucharistic celebration of December 13, the Third Sunday of Advent (Gaudete Sunday), when the Holy Father will open the Holy Door of the Cathedral of Rome, the Basilica of St. John Lateran. On that day, Bishop Malooly will open the Holy Door at Saints Peter and Paul.”

From Pope Francis on the Jubilee Year of Mercy: “When faced with the gravity of sin, God responds with the fullness of mercy. Mercy will always be greater than any sin, [so] the Holy Door will become a  Door of Mercy  through which anyone who enters will experience the love of God who consoles, pardons, and instils hope…

Every Particular [parish] Church, therefore, will be directly involved in living out this Holy Year as an extraordinary moment of grace and spiritual renewal…We will entrust the life of the Church, all humanity, and the entire cosmos to the Lordship of Christ, asking him to pour out his mercy upon us like the morning dew, so that everyone may work together to build a brighter future.

We want to live this Jubilee Year in light of the Lord’s words: Merciful like the Father. The Evangelist reminds us of the teaching of Jesus who says, “Be merciful just as your Father is merciful” (Lk 6:36)….By crossing the threshold of the Holy Door, we will find the strength to embrace God’s mercy and dedicate ourselves to being merciful with others as the Father has been with us.

Let us live this Jubilee intensely, begging the Father to forgive our sins and to bathe us in his merciful ‘indulgence.’”

Mr. David Law, senior Computer Science major from the University of Delaware, has been coming in to work with 30 of our middle school students during Activity Period. The students are learning more about Coding with him, and seeing the game design process first hand, as he shows them what he has done to develop his own game. He is also working after school on Thursdays with the 15 members of our new Computer Science Club. He is developing lessons each week to help the students learn more about this area of interest. Who knew we had so many budding Game Designers and Computer Programmers under our roof?

This week we turn our thoughts to our thriving and vibrant fourth grade classes. Each week the students and their catechists develop and deepen their understanding and appreciation of God’s law in our lives. The students learn about the Ten Commandments and the two great commandments given to us by Jesus. Through learning about these laws, the students recognize that we have a responsibility to others that is equal to our own personal responsibility. God’s law is for us to become better people because our decisions are based on love and justice. Thank you to our catechists for being such wonderful authentic witnesses to our students.

Please know that you are all wished a very joyous and Happy Thanksgiving from the Religious Education office. May this Thanksgiving be filled with great joy and happiness for you and your family. Thank you from us for sharing the wonderful gift of your children. They keep smiles on our faces and in our hearts. Blessings and joy to you for a very Happy Thanksgiving!

CAN WE COUNT ON YOU TO SPONSOR A FAMILY FOR CHRISTMAS?

We have many families who need help for Christmas. If you would like to sponsor a family by providing gifts for the children and a small gift certificate for the parents, please call Carol at 235-8622.

Leave your contact information and the size of the family you wish to sponsor. We will get back to you with details. Gifts are due by Sunday, November 29.

Perhaps a group at your workplace, or several neighbors, or members of one of your social groups might join together to be a family’s sponsor.

THE GIVING TREEThe Giving Trees will be placed in our Church vestibule on the weekend of Oct. 24. Please take a tag from the tree and purchase

a gift for a child or a gift certificate for a senior citizen or a family. (Feel free to take more than one tag.)• All gifts must be wrapped, and gift cards should be placed in an envelope.• Tape the Giving Tree tag to the gift package or gift card envelope.• All wrapped and tagged gifts must be returned at the masses on the weekend of November 28/29.• You may leave gifts in the Lay Sacristy (room on the left as you enter the church vestibule).• If you miss getting a Tree tag, please consider obtaining a game, toy, or article of clothing for a child. Wrap the gift and attach

a note on the outside indicating the clothing size, age level, and whether it is appropriate for a boy, a girl, or either.• Or, if you donate cash, our volunteers will shop for a gift or gift certificate.

OUTREACHCHRISTMAS FOOD BASKETS

We provide a Christmas Meal for our area needy. The ongoing generosity of our St. John’s parishioners makes this possible. Christmas baskets will be distributed on Saturday, December 12.

In our church vestibule, you will find a display with tags for a chicken, ham, or turkey. Medium to large chickens and hams are especially good choices.

Please take a tag, purchase the meat entrée, and drop the meat off at the Vianney House (M-F, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.), or at the Outreach Office (M/W/F, 8:30-10:30 a.m.), or call 994-7867.

If your supermarket offers a free entrée, perhaps you might make that your donation.

• Other needed items include canned vegetables, gravy, canned fruit, boxed potatoes, canned yams or sweet potatoes, stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, coffee, tea, cake mixes, frostings, and aluminum roasting pans.

As always, thank you very much for your generosity. Deadline for donations is Tuesday, December 8, but the sooner the better.

Acme Pike Creek customers who purchase Turkey Bucks at the store's registers are contributing to local charities, including St. John the Beloved's Outreach Program.

Trip to St. Charles

A special bus trip has been arranged by the Legion of Mary to attend the annual Open House at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary on Sunday, December 6, 2015. All are invited to the Open House which is offered only one day of the year to the public. It will include a guided tour of the seminary, magnificent chapel, artwork, and grounds. Following the tour, the seminarians will provide refreshments, and conclude with their uplifting and inspiring free concert! Since the seminary recently hosted Pope Francis during his Philadelphia visit, they should be full of interesting stories and trivia. These 157 seminarians are future Priests, and full of energy and enthusiasm for the Faith. It will be a nice opportunity to show support for them and for their vocation, as well. The Open House is free, so riders only pay for the cost of the bus. The bus will leave on Sunday (12/6) at 11:30am from St. Mary of the Assumption parking lot and will return by 6:30pm. Cost is $26/rider. To make a reservation, or for more information, please contact Linda Mondzelewski: 302-994-2781 or [email protected]

FAMILY PROMISE WEEK

NOVEMBER 30-DECEMBER 4, 2015

SJTB will once again be supporting Limestone Presbyterian with their week of hosting Family Promise.

Four times a year we assist by preparing the five weekday dinners. Youth Group, Knights of Columbus and Boy Scouts have graciously volunteered to do one night each (Monday, Tuesday and Thursday). I am looking for donations of either a main course, salad, bread, a vegetable, a starch or a dessert for the other two nights (Wednesday and Friday). We prepare enough food for 18 - 20 people. Please contact me (Joann Paupe) at 302-239-4033 or 732-221-8501 for further details or email me at [email protected] if you are able to help. Thank you in advance for helping those in need in our community.

PARENTING POINTERS

Do you have a family tradition for how you spend the day after Thanksgiving? (shopping, eating leftovers, playing games, etc.) Decide together how best to use your precious family time this weekend. Don't let shopping rob you of what's really important.

“Marriage and Family Life Corner”

Thanksgiving is usually a feast of family and food - but it takes a lot of work. "Are you the King of the Jews?" (John 18:33) Don't let family hierarchy absolve either of you from both being a servant and at least having a moment of being King or Queen for a day this week.

YOUTH MINISTRY

Away in a Manger: An Advent Day of Prayer and Reflection

Dec 1, 2015 9:30am-3:30pm,, Jesus House Prayer and Renewal Center, 2501 Milltown Rd, Wilmington, DE 19808, 302-995-6858 St. Francis of Assisi is often credited with giving us “the first Christmas crib.” While his devotion to the Christmas mystery has no doubt influenced our modern custom of arranging Nativity scenes in our churches and homes at Christmas, what St. Francis did at Greccio, a small town in Italy, was something more—something deeper. You are invited to “come to the stable” on this day of prayer to reflect on how this familiar scene portrays the kind of human heart which can hold in welcome our Incarnate God-Child who comes to dwell with us. Clare A D'Auria OSF, a Sister of St. Francis of Philadelphia will be our retreat leader. Cost is $35 per person before Dec. 1st or $40 at the door. Sign up on our website (jesushousecenter.org) or call our office at 302-995-6859 to register.
