Dear Parish Family, John’s Gospel: Jesus’ public life begins with a wedding and closes with a funeral. There are four primary characters in this story: Jesus, Martha, Mary, and Lazarus. Martha, Mary and

Lazarus, siblings, were good friends of Jesus. John tells us that he “loved” them. The sisters of Lazarus, Martha and Mary, send word to Jesus telling him that “the man you love” is gravely ill. Curiously though, Jesus does not immediately rush off to see Lazarus. Instead he stays where he is for two more days, until Lazarus is dead, and then sets off to see him. When he arrives near the house, he is met by Martha who says to him: “If you had been here, my brother would not have died!” Basical-ly her question is: “Where were you? Why didn’t you come and heal him?” Jesus does not answer her question but instead assures her that Lazarus will live in some deeper way. Martha then goes and calls her sister, Mary. When Mary arrives she repeats the identical words to Jesus that Martha had spoken: “If you had been here my brother would not have died!” However, coming out of Mary’s mouth, these words mean something else, something deeper. Mary is asking the universal, timeless question about suffering and God’s seeming absence. Her query (“Where were you when my broth-er died?”) asks that question for everyone: Where is God when inno-cent people suffer? Where was God during the holocaust? Where is God when anyone’s brother dies? Where is God during this time of ‘death all over the world’ and we are helpless against an unseen ene-my? On his arrival, Jesus pacified Martha with one of the most treasured of his teachings, which brings great consolation at funeral service, “I am the Resurrection and the Life. Whoever lives and believes in me will never die.” Jesus offers “eternal life,” which begins with Faith now and lasts forever in its fullness. John’s story offers a challenging re-sponse and offers us all those words that bring such consolation at fu-neral services: “I am the Resurrection and the Life; whoever believes in me even if he [or she] dies will live, and everyone who believes in me will never die.” The lesson in this death and raising may be put this way: the God we believe in doesn’t necessarily intervene and rescue us from suffering and death (although we are invited to pray for that). Instead he redeems our suffering afterwards. But sometimes the only answer to the ques-tion of suffering and evil is the one Jesus gave to Mary and Martha—shared helplessness, shared distress, and shared tears, with no attempt to try to explain God’s seeming absence, but rather a trusting that, be-cause God is all-loving and all-powerful, in the end all shall be well and our pain will someday be redeemed in God’s embrace. While the miracle of raising Lazarus from grave shows Jesus’ Divine power over death itself it also shows him as a wonderfully sensitive human being. His love for Lazarus and his sisters is palpable. Martha’s and Mary’s complaint that Jesus’ presence would have averted Laza-rus’ death shows us how real their friendship was. So do Jesus’ tears. The story also represents the best of that special human quality in Jesus of openly expressing real feelings. This interpretive description of Je-sus’ greatest miracle is also John’s reflection on the significance of the Resurrection.

Hoping and praying for all during this coronavirus pandemic. Keep the faith and know we will all get through this with the help of God. Everyone has time on their hands, so fill some of it by praying the Rosary, making the Stations of the Cross, helping Mom and Dad and watching the Mass on the parish website. If you do, your will remember this as your best Lenten season to date. Blessings and love, Kathleen Dunn and all of our great Catechists

Today’s Readings First Reading —Thus says the Lord GOD: I will open your graves, have you rise from them, and settle you on your land. Then you shall know I am the LORD, O my people! (Ezekiel 37:12-14). Psalm — With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of re-demption (Psalm 130). Second Reading — If Christ is in you, the spirit is alive even if the body is dead because of sin (Romans 8:8-11). Gospel — Lazarus, dead for four days, came out of his tomb when Jesus called his name (John 11:1-45 [3-7, 17, 20-27, 33b-45]).

IVE GLORY TO GOD On the Fifth Sunday of Lent, just before we begin to enter Holy Week, we are summoned to Bethany. If we had been friends of Mary, Lazarus, and Martha, and found out that Lazarus was gravely ill, we probably would have dropped everything to be with them. This was what was so surprising about the behavior of Jesus. Although he was their close friend, he chose to stay away, that God’s glory would be manifested. This is a persistent theme in John’s Gospel. Right to the very end, Jesus’ works were meant to give glory to the Father. As our Lenten journey reaches a crescendo, let us be mindful that, as people who have “put on Christ” in baptism, we are also called, by our attitudes and actions, to give glory to God.

Offerings will be reported when we Resume Mass.

As you know the bills for the maintenance of the church continues regardless, please con-tinue to send your offerings to support the church either by mail or through online pay-ment https://stjohnspiermont.churchgiving.com Thank you for your support and generosity to St. Johns.

A Coronavirus Prayer Jesus Christ, you traveled through towns and villages “curing every disease and illness.” At your command, the sick were made well. Come to our aid now, in the midst of the global spread of the coronavirus, that we may expe-rience your healing love.

Heal those who are sick with the virus. May they regain their strength and health through quality medical care.

Heal us from our fear, which prevents nations from work-ing together and neighbors from helping one another.

Heal us from our pride, which can make us claim invul-nerability to a disease that knows no borders.

Jesus Christ, healer of all, stay by our side in this time of uncertainty and sorrow.

Be with those who have died from the virus. May they be at rest with you in your eternal peace.

Be with the families of those who are sick or have died. As they worry and grieve, de-fend them from illness and despair. May they know your peace.

Be with the doctors, nurses, researchers and all medical professionals who seek to heal and help those affected and who put themselves at risk in the process. May they know your protection and peace.

Be with the leaders of all nations. Give them the foresight to act with charity and true concern for the well-being of the people they are meant to serve. Give them the wisdom to invest in long-term solutions that will help prepare for or prevent future outbreaks. May they know your peace, as they work together to achieve it on earth.

Whether we are home or abroad, surrounded by many people suffering from this illness or only a few, Jesus Christ, stay with us as we endure and mourn, persist and prepare. In place of our anxiety, give us your peace.

Jesus Christ, heal us.

Amen
