December 7, 2014 Second Sunday of Advent
The first line of Mark’s Gospel today reveals to us some privileged information: Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
As the audience for the evangelist, we have information that very few in the Gospel will know or comprehend until much later, if at all. As readers and listeners, we will later be sur-prised, shocked, tantalized, disappointed, frus-trated that Jesus’ closest disciples are not able to understand what we already know: that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah.
But today we hear that “[p]eople of the whole Judean countryside and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem” (Mark 1:5) made their way out to the wilderness to see an unusual sight: a man who wore camel’s hair, ate locusts and wild honey, and proclaimed repentance for the forgiveness of sins. John the Baptist is quick to tell the crowds that he is not the one they are looking for. “One mightier than I is coming after me,” he tells them (1:7).
WILL THEY RECOGNIZE JESUS?When Jesus takes his place in line to be baptized by John
at the River Jordan, will the crowds know him? Of course we know from the way Mark later constructs his Gospel that they will not be clear about who he is.
Should we be surprised? How often do we look for God in dramatic or unusual occurrences or even in the latest fad? Why do we long so much for a dramatic sign or our own immediate answer to a prayer to be able to see the God who is right before our eyes?
Let’s not forget how lucky we are—even more so than the first disciples who walked with the Lord—to know that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that he walks among us today as we pray, are baptized, celebrate Eucharist, and serve the poor.
Today’s Readings: Is 40:1–5, 9–11; Ps 85:9–14; 2 Pt 3:8–14; Mk 1:1–8
