Our parish story continues . . .

On June 24, 2015, the Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, Father Matthew Pratscher arrived at St. John the Baptist Parish and was installed that same day by Bishop Siegel as the tenth pastor of the parish. Pic-

tured below is the installation Mass with Father Matt, Bishop Siegel, Father Tomy Chellakandathil, CMI, and Deacon Shaun Cieslik (Fr. Cieslik was ordained a priest on May 21, 2016.)

Though he calls the suburbs of Chicago home, Father Matt has not always lived here. Because his father served in the Marines, Father Matt was born in Hawaii, and he and his family also lived in Florida and Maryland before moving to Romeoville when he was eight years old in order to be close to family. He grew up in the parish of St. Andrew the Apostle in Romeoville and was active in scouting, athletics and youth ministry. The faith and parish community were always an integral part of life in the Pratscher household. While a sophomore at Joliet Catholic Academy, Father Matt began considering a vocation to the priesthood. After graduating from JCA in 2000, Father Matt attended St. John Vianney College Seminary at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, and then Mundelein Seminary in Illinois. Father Matt was ordained a deacon on November 3, 2007, and served the parish of St. Walter in Roselle during his final year in seminary. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Joliet by Bishop J. Peter Sartain on June 7, 2008 at the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus in Joliet.

Father Matt served as a parochial vicar at Visitation Parish in Elmhurst (2008-2011) and St. Dominic Parish in Bolingbrook (2011-2012) and then as pastor of the parish of St. Francis Xavier in Joliet from 2012 until 2015, when he was sent here to St. John the Baptist in Winfield. On September 14, 2016, he made profession with the Priestly Fraternity of St. Dominic, joining the Dominican Family while remaining a diocesan priest and receiving the benefits of being associated with an order that is known for simplicity, contemplation and preaching.

On his first anniversary of being pastor of St. John the Baptist Parish, Father Matt and the parish kicked off St. John’s Jubilee Celebration, entering into the parish’s 150th year. He was impressed by the history and generosity of the parish, and so he established a Jubilee Committee and encouraged the year leading up to the 150th anniversary to be spent remembering and celebrating the history and devotions of the parish.

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — Never forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of slavery and fed you with manna in the desert (Deuteronomy 8:2-3, 14b-16a).

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Happy Corpus Christi! This weekend we cel-ebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, when we reflect upon and give honor to the Holy Eucharist. The Eucharist is the heart of the Christian com-munity. At the Mass, the faithful come to-gether as a family for a sacred banquet to receive the Bread of Life. In the sixth chapter of the Gos-pel of John, thousands of disciples walked away from Jesus out of disbelief when Jesus told them that He Himself is the bread of life that has come down from heaven and that His flesh is true food and His blood is true drink. Christ fulfilled that teaching at the Last Supper, the night before He offered His Body and Blood on the altar of the cross, when He instituted the sacrament of His Body and Blood on the altar of the Mass. The greatest act of mercy and love (the crucifixion) has been perpetually captured in the Mass. Every time we approach the altar at Mass, we approach Christ; we are renewed in our union with Christ; we receive Christ. Our food for the journey of life, which can be a long journey, is no ordinary bread, but it is Jesus Himself. Christ walks with us! Christ accompanies us! As we journey together, let us stay close to Christ. Let us receive Him with devo-tion, humility, and love. He loves you, and He gives Himself to you in this most precious and sa-cred sacrament.

After the 11:30 and 1:30 Masses this weekend we are having a Eucharistic procession, by which we process outside of the Church with the Blessed Sacrament (the Eucharist). Children who received their First Communion this year will participate in their First Communion outfits, dropping flower petals before our Lord. An ice cream social will follow. The procession reminds us that we walk together in Christ on this journey to Heaven. The Eucharist is our food for the journey, and after re-ceiving Christ, we bring Him into our streets, into our daily lives. We give God thanks for the gift of the Holy Eucharist: the sacrament of the love of Christ.

¡Feliz Corpus Christi! Este fin de semana celebramos la Solemnidad del Santísimo Cuerpo y Sangre de Cristo, cuando reflexionamos y honramos la Santa Eucaristía. La Eucaristía es el corazón de la comunidad cristiana. En la misa, los fieles se reúnen como familia para un banquete

sagrado para recibir el pan de la vida. En el sexto capítulo del Evangelio de Juan, los miles de discípulos se alejaron de Jesús de la incredulidad cuando Jesús les dijo que Él mismo es el pan de vida que ha bajado del cielo y que su carne es verdadera comida y su sangre es verdadera bebida. Después de las misas de las 11:30 y 1:30 de este fin de semana estamos celebrando una procesión eucarística, procesaremos fuera de la Iglesia con el Santísimo Sacramento (la Eucaristía). The Traveling Madonna is a ministry which seeks to promote the Holy Rosary. We are looking for families to accept the Statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary into their home for one week. A Knight will bring the statue to your home and if desired, pray the

From the Diocese of Joliet Office for Human Dignity "Fortnight for Freedom" - June 21--July 4, 2017

Once again our Church is preparing to celebrate a "Fortnight for Freedom," a campaign initiated by the U. S. Bishops. From June 21 through July 4 parish-es are called to participate in prayer events and to focus on the powerful witnesses to Christ of three saints whose feast days occur during the "Fortnight," St. Thomas More, St. John Fisher, and our parish patron, St. John the Baptist. Each was put to death for opposing the actions of the rul-ers of the kingdoms in which they lived. Each of them chose to die rather than betray the Truth. “The reason for the strength of each of these men in the face of death was their personal relationship with Jesus Christ -- it is only from this foundation that we can truly express our freedom to bear wit-ness.” (usccb.org)

You are invited to pray the Holy Rosary during the Fortnight in the Chapel on Sundays at 8:30 a.m. This weekly parish Rosary was begun in response to the U.S. Bishops' call to prayer during the 2013 "Fortnight for Free-dom". Come to the Chapel following 7:30 a.m. Sunday Mass (or come early and pray before 9:30 a.m. Mass). Included in the intentions are prayers for an end to the practice and legality of abortion, for freedom of the Church and Catholic peoples to practice their faith without government interfer-ence, and for law and public policy to sustain recognition of marriage as be-tween one man and one woman. Our personal intentions are also remem-bered. Prayer changes things. All are welcome.

Recent legislation which promotes abortions in Illinois House Bill 40 was passed by the Illinois House and Senate. It allows taxpay-er money to pay for elective abortions in the Medicaid program and state employees' health insurance plans, action that was prohibited prior. Public opinion polls regularly show little support for this public policy move. Governor Bruce Rauner has promised to veto this bill, otherwise, it will automatically become law in Illinois in 60 days (on July 10, 2017). You may contact Gov. Spiritual Adoption Program

Once a month, for the next nine months, we’ll describe our spiritually-adopted baby’s development. Participants in the Spiritual Adoption Program pledge to pray daily for nine months for a baby in danger of abortion, and for the biological parents who are contemplating abortion, that they will respond to God's grace and welcome their child into life.

And, it is not too late to spiritually adopt a baby. The adoption cards are in the narthex of the Church and Chapel.

Month Three Developing Baby Spiritual Adoption Program Your baby is quite active in the womb now - - although his/her mother won’t feel him/her for another couple of months. If his/her mother’s womb had a win-dow, you could watch your spiritually adopted baby squint, swallow and move his/her tongue. He/she can make a tight fist if you touch his/her palm. He/she is breathing fluid which he continues until birth. He/she obtains the oxygen his/her body needs through the umbilical cord. The baby you are praying for weighs one ounce, and he/she can smile.

Parish Collections

Abram tithed (giving at least 10%) as a symbol that he depended to-tally on God. Moses said tithing was holy and an act of worship. St. Vincent de Paul Clothing Drive - June 17 & 18

The St. Vincent de Paul truck will be in our parking lot the weekend of June 17 & 18 for a Spring Clothing Drive.

They will accept:

Clothing, shoes, linens and books in good or bad condition. Unusable cloth-ing, shoes, linens or even books generate income for the needy because they are sold for rags or in bulk.

No baby equipment such as cribs, walkers, strollers, playpens, etc, will be accepted. However, ALL BABY CLOTHES ACCEPTED.

Second Collection This Weekend-for the Fund for Diocesan Infirmed & Elderly Priests

There will be a special collection at all Masses this weekend to care for our infirm and re-tired priests. Please prayerfully con-sider making a donation. This annu-al collection is not to be confused with the annual collection for Re-tired Religious, which typically asks for donations in December and is geared specifically for religious or-der priests and nuns (for instance, Carmelite, Franciscan, Benedictine, Augustinian, Viatorian, etc.). NEW for the 2017-2018 School Year-Tuition Transfer Grant-The Tuition Transfer Grant is available to any public, private, home school or charter school student who transfers into a participating Catholic school. Our St. John the Baptist school is a participant in this grant.

Upon acceptance, elementary students in grades 1 – 7 receive a $1,500 in total tui-tion grants: $1,000 in 1st year and $500 in 2nd year.

Restrictions apply. Students transferring from another Catholic school in the Dio-cese of Joliet, Archdiocese of Chicago, the Diocese of Rockford, Peoria, Springfield and Belleville are not eligible. Also, students must follow the established admission policies at the school’s discretion.

The Knights are supporters of the family and honor those couples devoting a lifetime of love together true to their marriage vows. This plaque was given to the Parisi's at a special reception for them and their family with the Knights on Saturday, May 27. Prior to the re-ception, they renewed their vows in the Chap-el after the 5pm Mass.
