Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Last call for volunteers to help us move items from our parish buildings to the special dumpster we will have next Saturday, August 12th, beginning at 9am. Many parishes make this an annual event. We have not done so for many years. Anyone who can help is asked to leave a message for Deacon Jim at the rectory, or come next Saturday to give a few hours. Thank you!

+++

As you know, today is the Feast Day of our school, Transfiguration Academy. The three parishes of St. John’s, St. Mary’s in Dumont and Ascension in New Milford decided on this name when we combined our three parish schools into one. Like the 3 Apostles who witnessed Jesus in His glory, we three parish schools came together in His Name to prepare students for the glory yet to be revealed in them in Christ. Since that time, we have also drawn students from other area parish schools which have closed in Leonia, Englewood, and Harrington Park. This year, our Academy will be going through the process of reaccreditation by the Middle States Association, which will reveal that an Academy which started with a powerful faith-filled, educational, creative and social presence has grown even more by leaps and bounds to prepare children for the challenges of the leading high schools, colleges and universities, and ever-changing world.

At the same time, the cost of tuition continues to rise and some families are called to make extreme sacrifices which they can no longer bear alone. For many years, our parish’s Sr. Trinity Scholarship Fund has helped such families in need. The fund needs some serious cash in-flow if we are to continue this worthy cause going forward. Cash donations or checks made payable to the Sr. Trinity Scholarship Fund are welcome at any time of the year. Please consider this as one of your worthy charities.

Rev. Msgr. Richard J. Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings

The apostles who accompanied Jesus up the mountain to pray were privileged to see Jesus as He would appear for all eternity, after He entered into His glory at the right hand of the Father. The light that transformed Jesus and dazzled the apostles was not a light from outside shining upon Him; it came from within, the grace of God, transforming Jesus’ human body.

God wants to transform us, just as He transformed His Son; He has “saved us and called us with a holy calling” (2 Tim. 1:9). Too often, however, we try to change ourselves by using the power of the world to live spiritual lives. It cannot be done that way; it comes only through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel” (2 Tim. 1:10). As we come to see Jesus through the eyes of faith, His Spirit is able to work within us, transforming our lives and giving us a share in His perfect holiness.

The transformation God wants to work in us is not merely for our own well-being. All members of Christ’s church are meant to reflect His glory and, by this reflection, to change the world. By the power of His Spirit, the Father wants to transform us all into radiant sons and daughters, shining like the sun in this darkened world. Ever since His first promise to Abram, that he would make of him “a great nation” (Gen. 12:2), God has been working to bring His people to that fullness of life that will renew the face of the earth. The degree to which we are transformed and empowered is the degree to which we will be effective in convincing the world of the glory of Christ and the truth of His salvation.

Jesus’ transfiguration helped prepare the apostles for the salvation He was to win for all humanity. Our transformation—and the transformation of the church—can prepare the world to receive and accept the salvation Jesus has won for us. We must let the Holy Spirit work through us, molding us into the image of Christ. As we are transformed, the church will reflect God’s glory, and the whole world will be touched.

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“And He was transfigured before them; His face shone like the sun and His clothes became white as light.” Matthew 17: 2

Just as the moon reflects the light of the sun, we should reflect Christ’s light to the world. When we receive the Eucharist, the Body and Blood of Jesus, we are called to be supernatural to reflect His love, mercy, and forgiveness to others. When we are grateful for all that God has given us, generosity flows through us because we are made in God’s image.
