St. John Mission Statement
Baptized into Christ, we are a community of believers, bonded
by our desire to learn and to live the Gospel message. As a
Eucharistic people, we share a commitment to foster our
personal and communal growth in faith and to witness to
Christ’s presence by our service to those in need, both within
and beyond our parish community.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
ST. JOHN'S BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP
The final schedule of books to be read this coming year has been posted on the parish website.
The first book to be discussed, on September 15, is the highly acclaimed "Simply Jesus: A New Vision of Who He Was, What He Did and Why He Matters" by N.T. Wright, former bishop, Church of England.
For information on the book group please contact
John Stewart at (617) 969-0950 or [email protected]. There is no formal "membership". You do not have to read every book and attend every meeting! Our goal is enlightenment - we gather each month to help each other grow in our understanding of our faith and in our relationship with God.

COLLABORATIVE NEWS
WE OFFER OUR PRAYERS for members of our Collaborative who are ill, remembering especially: Alanna, Annie, Brian, Carolyn, Chris, Chrissy, Gerard, Jean, Jennie, Joe, Liz, Lynn, Lynne, Molly, Neal and Patrick
KINDLY REMEMBER IN YOUR PRAYERS: Paul Kloss
May his soul and the souls of all our faithful departed share in the fullness of life and peace with God.
YEAR OF MERCY: YEAR OF RCIA? Pope Francis dedicated this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy to living out in our daily lives the mercy which God constantly extends to all of us. As he says, “Let us allow God to surprise us. He never tires of casting open the doors of his heart and of repeating that he loves us and wants to share his love with us.”
Are you ready to be surprised? Please consider the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. The doors of the RCIA are flung open wide for you if…
• You have been worshiping with us, but never officially took the step to become Catholic; • Have been away from the Church … and have now returned, but want to know more; • Have been a Catholic all your life, but never celebrated all of the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist); • Have joined us from a different faith community and would now like to find out more about the Catholic Church; • Are seeking a deeper personal relationship with Jesus but have never been baptized.
If you answer yes to any of these situations, please consider saying yes to joining us when we begin our journey this autumn. Everyone is welcome. There will be more information forthcoming. In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to contact Alan LaFleur and Svea Fraser at [email protected] with your questions.

CRUCIBLE MOMENTS AND THE ROLE OF CONSCIENCE—A CONVERSATION ABOUT THE REFUGEE
CRISIS: A conversation about refugee crises and profiles of others’ “crucible moments” with authors David and Sasha Chanoff, sponsored by Voice of the Faithful® and the Boston College Church in the 21st Century Center. Sunday, Sept. 11, 2016, 2:30 p.m., Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola, 28 Commonwealth Ave., Chestnut Hill. Reception follows discussion. Free.
Save the Date! A PILGRIMAGE TO THE HOLY DOORS
During the Holy Year of Mercy doors are to be opened in the Cathedrals of the world, doors of mercy. In the Archdiocese of Boston, the Cathedral of the Holy Cross will be open for pilgrims to enter and receive the graces of the Holy Doors. Our St. John-St. Paul Collaborative will be going on a tour of the Cathedral on Sunday,
October 23 at 2:00 p.m. All are invited to attend! More info to follow.
A holy door or porta sancta has been used since the 15th century as a ritual expression of conversion. Pilgrims pass through it as a gesture of leaving behind the past and crossing the threshold from sin to grace, from slavery to freedom, and from darkness to light.
UPDATE-SPECIAL SECOND COLLECTION FOR THE ASSOCIATION OF MAMA THERESA:
Last week, Fr. John Amuda left our Collaborative to return to the Central African Republic. St. John’s and
St. Paul’s are grateful for his dedicated service to our parishes. During the last two weekends, Fr. John spoke at all Masses about his missionary work in the Central African Republic and the Association of Mama Theresa, a
non-governmental organization he headed. Thanks to the generosity of parishioners at both parishes, over $20,000 was collected to help the important work of Fr. John and his Association. Thank you so much for your generosity. If you would like to keep in contact with Fr. John, you may e-mail him at: [email protected]

Boston Priests. There for us.
At Saint Stephen Parish in Framingham, the lively multicultural community with a strong Hispanic presence has become an extension of Fr. Francisco “Paco” Anzoategui’s family. “We may speak dierent languages and have dierent traditions, but we are not two separate communities,” said Fr. Paco. “We are one family of believers with the same faith, and we are united in a wonderful bond that we call our spiritual family.”
To help ensure a continuum of care for Fr. Paco and all our devoted priests who faithfully serve our Catholic family please support the special collection on September 17-18.
