Donations Being Collected for Heart to Heart Pregnancy Resource Center

Since the beginning of the Pandemic, which has significantly altered the way we have come to interact with others, individuals and groups have still found a way to be a voice of comfort to others in addition to providing help in a variety of ways when needed. At this time, St Johns would like to fill our Good Works Basket with donations for Heart to Heart Pregnancy

Resource Center. As you know, the Center is a Christian based nonprofit organization offering support to women and men in pregnancy and family crisis situations. At this time many of their clients have newborns and many more deliveries are expected in the next couple of months.

Collection Needs Premie and newborn clothing and other items to assist the Center in providing for the practical needs of these families. Due to concerns over the virus new clothing is preferred. (If donating a gently used blanket, it must be washed and bagged separately.)

sleepers, booties, onesies, wash cloths, bottles, pacifiers, diapers, receiving and baby blankets, etc.

A special thank you to the American Heritage Girls who will collect St. John’s donations, assemble individual family boxes and deliver them to the Pregnancy Center for distribution. If you have any questions or would like more information about this organization please give Elisa Betson a call. For volunteer opportunities at the Center contact their office at 694-1747.

Newsletter from Antiochian Women Link for the Newsletter: For your reading enjoyment is the Winter edition of our Diocese of LA & the West (DLAW) Antiochian Women's Newsletter. Inside the pages of this edition is an inspiring message from Metropolitan JOSEPH, who exhorts his readers: "...let us be encouraged that neither pandemic nor economic instability nor tragedy can destroy us if we always realize that God is in control of our lives and of the world. Let us go forward as we come out of the pandemic retaining as much as we can of this simpler life we have been blessed with during this time. Let us refrain from bringing back to our lives all the busyness, the nuisances, and the worldly spirit that dominated us for so long. If we can accomplish this, then the pandemic will have ultimately been for our salvation, and we will come out a stronger Church." Additionally, our Spiritual Advisor - Fr. David Hovik writes about "The Reign of Heaven." Kh. Joanna Townsend shares an engrossing account of her battle with COVID, and the grandmothers of St George in Phoenix explored the world of Harley Davidson motorcycles! • In Response From Fr. Marc’s ‘Reflections on Covid’ A Poem Keith Haley

    Afraid/Frayed New World

    by Keith Haley

An abrupt awakening, to what we already knew, That we are mortal, amplified by a pandemic flu. A world where our attention is daily consumed, Our lives on pause, waiting to resume. What has really changed? Is our hope now in science? Has that become our only reliance? For science is merely the revelation of what already was. Where it came from, is the Great Because. No storm lasts forever, each has an end. Our faith is questioned, on what shall we depend? Many things are different, but One remains unchanged. Through all our trials, God remains the same. Has this new catalyst become our only frame? That something so small could dominate our minds, But One so great, we struggle to find. When we look back at history, Our ancestors seemly figured out, What appears to us now, a complete mystery, They endured an entire world at war. A time when death was always near, FDR was right, what he said about fear. So how do we move forward, in this afraid, frayed new world? As we are pulled apart and our plans unfurled? Are we no longer brother, sister, father, mother? Or merely a potential danger to each other? Shall we embrace aggravation, agitation, isolation and mutations? How about a little reorientation, compassion and consolation? The sun will continue to rise in the sky. Maybe it’s time to pause, and ponder the Reason why.

  • THE SYNAXARION

On February 7, in the Holy Orthodox Church we continue to celebrate the Meeting (or Presentation) of our Lord Jesus Christ in the Temple. On this day, we also commemorate our righteous Father Parthenios, bishop of Lampsakos.

    Verses

Parthenios has forsaken his earthly body to the city of Lampsakos, As a lamp he blazed with fervent brightness.

On the seventh, Parthenios entered the long slumber from this earthly life.

As a child, Parthenios remembered well the words of the Gospel

and endeavored to fulfill them. He settled in the area of a lake where he fished and sold his catch and distributed the money to the poor. As the first known bishop of the ancient Greek city of Lampsakos, he cleansed the town of paganism, closed the idolatrous temples, built many churches and strengthened the faithful in the true Faith. Through prayer, he healed every manner of illness and he was particularly powerful over

evil spirits. At one time he wanted to cast out an evil spirit from an insane man, but the spirit begged him not to do so. Parthenios told the spirit to enter into himself instead, and it fled away in fear. Parthenios reposed in the fourth century.

    On this day, we also commemorate Venerable Luke of Hellas;

and New-martyr George of Crete. On the Sunday which falls during the After-feast of the

Meeting of our Lord, we commemorate the Holy and Righteous Mothers of the Three Great Hierarchs: Emmelia, mother of Saint Basil the Great, Anthousa, mother of Saint John Chrysostom and Nonna, mother of Saint Gregory the Theologian.

By the intercessions of Your Saints, O Christ God, have mercy upon us. Amen.
