2017- Developments and Achievements

OFFICIAL OPENING OF LILONGWE SERVICE GRANADA CENTRE

We celebrated the official opening of St John of God Hospitaller Services, Granada centre on Wednesday 14th June 2017.

The ceremony was presided over by the previous Minister of Health Dr. Peter Kumpalume, who was the guest of honor while

The Vicar General, Reverend Father Francis Sonkhani blessed the facility on behalf of his Lordship Archbishop Tarsizio Ziyaye.

Granada Centre program expands its networks of outreach clinics in Lilongwe District

• Additional outreach clinics were established at Mitundu, Lumbadziand Nathenje communities

• This development now brings a total number of mental health outreach clinics to 17.

• A total of 12568 clients accessed mental health services

Setting up a new Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) clinic for children with disability

• In a bid to extend our early child intervention services in Lilongwe we opened a CBR clinic in Mtsiliza township to serve children around Mtsiliza, Mtandile, part of area 47 and area 49 in Lilongwe.

• Mtsiriza is one of the most populated slums in Lilongwe.

• The clinic operates from St Kizito Community Health Centre and targets children 0 – 15 years of age.

Full rolling out of the prison mental health, psychosocial services and vocational skills training project

• With support from Misean Cara we fully rolled out our mental health, psychosocial services and vocational skills training project

• The target is 6 prisons in Malawi (Mzuzu, Mzimba, Rumphi and Nkhatabay prisons in the Northern region; Maula and Kasungu prisons in the Central Region)

• The aim is to improve quality of life of inmates through provision of treatment and care to those with mental health problems and epilepsy; psychosocial counselling and support; rehabilitation and vocational skills training; capacity building and advocacy.

Results of end of project evaluation – Community mental health outreach in Lilongwe

• In December, 2016 – January, 2017, we engaged A& R Development Consulting firm to conduct an end of term evaluation of Community Mental Health and Early Child Services Project.

• Key findings of the evaluation were that the project was relevant at individual, community and National level (enhanced accessibility of services, in line with Government priorities)

Development of Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials

• In conjunction with Ministry of Health (MOH), we organized an expert session to develop IEC materials in mental health from 6 to 10th

February, 2017

Youth Mental Wellness WorkshopWe conducted a youth mental health wellness workshop at Granada center in September 2017 to equip the youth with better decision making skills

Enhancing Staff Capacity to respond to clinical emergenciesIn an effort to equip clinical staff with skills to respond to clinical emergencies like cardiorespiratory

arrest, we facilitated a two day training on cardio pulmonary resuscitation to clinicians and nurses.

Partnership and linkages through Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Government

• We signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Lilongwe District Health Office for provision of community mental health services in the District

We also signed another MOU with Malawi Prison Services in August, 2017 at St John of God, Granada Centre regarding implementation of Prison Project.

Saint John of God Centre establishes more outreach clinics• Three new clinics were opened in the year including Jenda in Mzimba,

Bolero in Rumphi and Chintheche in Nkhatabay.

• Community mental health education

HOUSE OF HOSPITALITY

• In 2017 the House of Hospitality in Mzuzu continued to provide short term residential mental health services to our clients.

• 244 clients were admitted and 220 were discharged. Out of these 98 were readmissions

Extension of period for Venegas Addiction Centre recovery program

• The Venegas Centre started offering a four week substance abuse treatment program to individuals with substance abuse problems in January 2017

• This followed the program evaluation exercise that was finalised in 2016

• 115 clients entered the treatment program. These comprised of 114 males and 1 female

• The Venegas Centre received different types of books from a recovering alcoholic from United States of America.

• In July the Child Development Centre conducted graduation ceremony for children under Elvira.

• 10 children transitioned to Institute of Vocation Training and 7 children graduated to mainstream primary schools

Portage volunteer training • To strengthen the capacity of portage volunteers the Child

Development Centre team facilitated training volunteers in February 2017

Postural Management

Umoza program holds a child rights Conference

• To strengthen the implementation of the Child and Vulnerable Adults Protection Policy, we Identified and trained 7 individuals in the department as Child Protection Focal persons

• Also developed a child user friendly leaflet depicting important perspectives from the policy

Facilitated stakeholders during a meeting to deliberate on the impact of the evening market on children

Institute of vocational training

• The following milestones have been attained with the vocational training programs;

• 69 of 113 Centre based graduates (61.06%) successfully passed Tevetacertificates.

• 28 of 57 (49.12%) Centre based graduates with disabilities have successfully passed a Teveta Certificate.

• 347 of 350 Community graduates (99.14%) have passed Teveta certificates. • Overall 454 0f 601 have sufficient job oriented knowledge and skill.• A “can DO spirit” for those with special needs has been achieved. • The Institute has strengthened diversity in training programmes•

Elderly Service – enhancement of health programs

• The Tovwilane Services for the elderly program registered a total of 578 service users.

• The project has initiated partnership with public hospitals to ensure that older people receive appropriate basic health services and, once the need arises, they are being referred to these hospitals.

• In total 450 service users that presented with specific health complaints were screened and treated with 78 were referred to general hospitals for further management

Rights awareness training among guardiansand and community committee members

Self -help group Approach

• The first Batch is currently having 241 self-help groups; translating to 4820 members who have 11417 children benefiting from the approach. These have 40 children groups with a capital of over MK55, 000, 000

• The second batch has a total of 139 groups rising from 28 from at the time we took over three years ago. These comprise of 2780 women and who have 3,008 children benefiting from the Self-help approach. They have a total capital that has accumulated to MK17,165,450

• The clusters in the Self Help Group Approach have also facilitated community based vocational skills training, currently 35 youths have just undergone various skills trainings like Tailoring, hair salon and bricklaying bringing to a total of 105 youths who have been trained through SHG’s Community Based Training (CBT) facilitated by Cluster Level Associations (CLAs).

St John of God College of Health Sciences

• Apart from almost doubling its in-take in 2017 as compared to the previous, the college in the year also embarked on a process of developing draft curriculums: Midwifery and BSc in Nursing and Midwifery and also completed a Bachelor of Arts in Counseling curriculum which has been presented to Chancellor College

• They are awaiting for approval by University of Malawi Senate

Hospitality foundation program: reflecting on the values of Saint John of God

• The Service’s Hospitality Team facilitated a “personal journey in Hospitality” for new staff members in Lilongwe and Mzuzu from 22nd to 23rd May, 2017 and 5th to 7th June, 2017 respectively.

• A total of 27 new staff members participated in the session.

• The team also conducted revisiting values sessions for 58 existing staff members on 24th, 25th and 26th May, 2017.

Enhancement of the Child and Vulnerable adult protection initiatives

• In an effort to strengthen implementation of the Child and Vulnerable Adult Protection Policy in all program areas in Lilongwe in the year 2017, we identified four (4) child and vulnerable adult protection focal persons in all departments (Administration and Support, Granada Centre, Portage and House of Hospitality)

• They were oriented to our Child and Vulnerable Adult Protection Policy and their roles on 28th June 2017.

• We also conducted an orientation to the Child and Vulnerable Adult Protection Policy to 24 new members and some who missed the 2016 orientation on 27th June, 2017.

St John of God Feast

• The Mzuzu family of St John of God celebrated the St John of God feast with His Lordship Bishop John Ryan presiding over the mass in the company of Father Edmond Nyoka, the Pastoral Secretary and Father Martin from the Mzuzu Diocese.

• The function not only brought together brothers and co-workers, but also clients from all services within St John of God and students from the St John of God College of Health Sciences including those from other denominations such as Presbyterians, Anglican, Adventists and many others joined the celebration.

• Attain accreditation and establishment of Saint John of God University

• Promote research culture within the service & college.

• Establish drug addiction recovery services in Lilongwe

• Strengthen Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Services in the community

• Promote and safeguard the rights of children and vulnerable adults availing services from SJOG

• Strengthen human rights approach and advocacy in delivering services in children programs

• Establish a local fundraising office and a National Coordination Office in Lilongwe

• Commence implementation of the 2018-2022 Service Strategic Plan.
