SAINT ALOYSIUS GONZAGA (June 21) The heir to his father’s ducal estate in Lombardy, Aloysius
dedicated himself to daily prayer from a young age. At twelve
he announced his desire to abdicate his title. Enraged,
Aloysius’ father sent his son on a tour of Italian courts.
But Aloysius continued his own regimen of fasting and
mortification. At last, his father permitted him to join the
Jesuits. In the novitiate at Rome, Aloysius is said to
have proclaimed, “This is my resting place forever; here
will I dwell, for I desire it” (Ps 132:14). After a short
but exemplary life as a Jesuit, Aloysius died in 1591, at
the age of twenty-three. He is a patron of youth.
(This excerpt taken from Magnificat, a monthly publication designed for daily use to encourage both liturgical and personal prayer. It can be used to follow
daily Mass and can also be read at home or wherever you find yourself for personal or family prayer. Visit www.us.magnificat.net for more info.)
