  • 3RD SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 13, 2020

    FROM FR. CONNEALY

Happy Sunday! We are at the halfway point of Advent, celebrating Gaudete Sunday this weekend. The Church sings in the entrance antiphon, “Gaudete in Domino semper!”, “Rejoice in the Lord always!” We rejoice because the Lord is near. In fact, the opening prayer of the Mass begins thus, “O God, who see how your people faithfully await the feast of the Lord’s Nativity…” We continue to meditate on the theme of “waiting” which distinguishes Christian spirituality in this season. We are waiting for the Lord to come at Christmas, but also at the end of time. We are like the virgins who wait with lighted lamp and flasks of oil. No one can wait for us, each of us must be attentive to the signs of the Lord’s coming.

Last week I published the Christmas Mass Schedule. On Christmas Eve we will have Mass at 4:30pm and 6:30pm. Typically 4:30pm is one of the most crowded Masses we have. It is very difficult to tell this year how many people will attend. For this reason we added a 6:30pm Mass to hopefully relieve some of the pressure from 4:30pm Mass. While we plan to have extra seating for the Masses we invite you to consider 6:30pm Mass as an option if you typically go to Mass Christmas Eve. As well, we will have Mass at midnight which is another fine option. Either way, we thank you for your patience with us as we prepare for Christmas Masses.

I hope everyone has a great week and that your Advent is going well. Know of my prayers for each of you.

    In Christ,

    Fr. Connealy

  • 3 DOMINGO de ADVIENTO 13 de DECIEMBRE 2020

    DE PADRE CONNEALY

    Feliz Domingo!

WHAT CAN IT MEAN TO SAY CHRISTIANITY IS TRUE? (Part 1)

Brian Hanson Before we can talk about “the truth of Christianity,” it is important to understand what we mean when we say “something is true” in the first place. Truth is not simply a property of knowledge -- it does not consist in “knowing” a collection of facts about something that we can store in our minds. In other words: to verify the facts about something -- whether we use a search engine like Google, or ask Alexa or Siri -- is not the same thing as saying that we know something to be true. As long as we approach the question of truth with the question of knowing (and collecting) facts, it will be an indirect encounter with truth. Truth is not something “out there somewhere,” and we have to go out and “find it,” like researching a topic using Google. Rather, truth is a quality of being and existing as such. And for Christians this has a concrete meaning, because to say that “Christianity is true” is more a matter of being in relationship with the source and meaning of all truth, Jesus Christ. In fact our faith tells us that all things in the world find their meaning in Jesus Christ, including all the “facts of life,” because all things were created in and through Him. Saint Bonaventure summed it up well when said that all the sciences find their archetype in the Incarnation, in the God who takes on flesh and becomes man, for all things “were created through him” and in whom “all things hold together” (see Colossians 1:15-17).

The Rite of Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens

Those who have inquired into the Catholic way of life will publicly declare their intention to follow Christ and become members of his Church. The Church in turn, represented by the community of St. Joan of Arc, will accept them as her members who are preparing for baptism. They will become “catechumens,” a word that means “one in whom the Word of God echoes.” They have responded to God’s call, and desire to enter into a formal relationship with Christ through the Church. The community of St. Joan of Arc will pledge its support throughout their journey of faith. Let us pray for Brandon, Lizbeth, Zahir and Kathleen as they prepare to take this step!

Did you ever stop and realize that there is no earthly gain that can ever really satisfy us? Think of winning the Lotto. On this side of the winning ticket, it’s all about the money, the new car, house, vacations, bank accounts, and infinite pleasures. The possibility of acquiring all of these earthly securities brings us back again and again to the purchase of a ticket. Then, one day we win! Our dreams are fulfilled, and happiness is on the horizon. Then one day, we wake up and realize that nothing has really changed, and I am not as satisfied as I thought I was or would be. I find myself living in my incompleteness and with my profound sorrow and grief. I did not find joy.

Glimpses of joy are possible but not by material means. They are brought to us through incredible experiences of connection that bring us face to face with real and authentic faith, hope, and love. And, they are glimpses and do not last. The moment we find ourselves looking back at them, they are gone, and we find ourselves remembering the moment in memory. To carry joy within us is to realize that it is not something I create, manufacture or even acquire. It is not able to be purchased. It is a gift. My need for joy mirrors my need for eternity, for a Creator who has a claim on the very essence of who I am and desires a home within me. As C. S. Lewis discovered, joy is a surprise that speaks to my very soul and is given as gift by the God who loves me.

The beauty of Advent is found in discovering the beauty of the gift of joy. God has visited his people for no other reason than to show them where and how to find joy! All of our human and earthly joy experiences are always only glimpses. They never satisfy us, sustain us or fulfill us. It is only God who is the joy of my soul. Real, Divine experiences of joy catch us off guard, make us stop and become aware, bring a feeling of awe and rightness and have an eternal Otherness about them. Nothing created by humans can ever come close to this. We probably will not fully realize the truth of all of this until we actually meet God face to face in heaven one day. Then, in that sacred moment when our hearts leap for joy we will understand what we have been tirelessly searching for all along. Intense gratitude will most surely follow.
