I am back in the saddle after vacation. Thinking back on the experience, several things
come to me. First, knowing that Fr. Rojin was holding down the fort, I felt a great sense
of peace. The parish is in very good and capable hands. Secondly, my injury in Israel
last January continues to be a source of blessings. Because of that broken knee, I
needed four months of physical therapy, at which I worked hard. The result is that this
summer my right leg, the injured one, is now relatively straight. This summer I was able
to swim the breast stroke for the first time in years. I was also able to get out of a kayak
by myself without having every young person in sight come rushing to the rescue of the
old man who was trapped in his kayak. So, not only did I receive much love from all of
you during my incapacity, but I also healed physically. Alleluia!
I attended Mass at three different Churches while I was away. In every case the congre-
gation sang well, which I attribute to all the vacationers, who when they are on vacation,
still go to Sunday Mass. I also noticed the difference in the presiders. Both were capable
and competent, but one gave a homily that connected to the congregation while the
other one was highly dogmatic. His style was excellent, but his content was tedious
teaching of a dogma that everyone who was present knew by heart. It reinforced for me
the importance of the homily in the overall experience of the Mass.
Finally, I got to spend lots of time with family. One of the disadvantages of being a priest
is that you are often too busy or tired to stay long at family events. At Christmas and
Easter, I join the family after the last Mass. They hold dinner for me, and I fall asleep af-
ter dinner. This summer I got to spend quality time with them. Best of all was my
“swimming race” with my five year old great niece. We raced seven times and you will
never believe this, but she won every time. Her delight in the race brought joy to my
heart. So, all in all, a great vacation that would not have been possible without Fr. Rojin!

AUGUST 25-26
As we turn towards Summer fading and school
starting, let's remember the needs of our Norwalk
families whose need for food persists through all
seasons. Our food drives benefit all who rely on
our local food pantries -- Person-2-Person, Open
Door Shelter, and Mid-Fairfield AIDS Project. The
most needed items include:
Oatmeal, soup, canned black beans, canned
fruit, pasta sauce, jelly/jam (except grape)
Social Concerns Committee volunteers will accept
cash donations after each Mass for the purchase of
these items. All items will be added to the collec-
tion. Donations may be left in the hallway anytime
during the week. Thank you for your generous help
feeding our neighbors.
TWEETS OF THE WEEK
@Pontifex “In silence we learn to
contemplate God’s works, which sur-
pass all our imagination.”
@BishopCaggiano “Mary taught us what the es-
sence of discipleship really is. It is complete, per-
sonal commitment to invite Christ to lead us in
life, at every moment and in all circumstances,
bringing forth His presence into the world by our
words, attitudes, actions, and decisions.”
@JamesMartinSJ “Gospel: When Jesus predicts
his suffering, the disciples are “overwhelmed with
grief.” Elsewhere, Peter wants to deny the possi-
bility of suffering. Yet even today, those who pro-
claim the Gospel of love, mercy and forgiveness
are persecuted. It is part of the life of the disci-
ple.”
