Invest just five minutes a day, and your faith will deepen and grow—a day at a

time.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 24, 2014 21ST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

It’s a mystery—sort of One of faith’s great mysteries is that God is just that: a mystery. The Supreme Being, scripture and tradition attest, is ultimately beyond all descriptions, words, and images and has to be totally different from humanity. Yet here’s the mystery: God who is beyond understanding also chooses to be understandable—to be revealed. In response faith calls for a respect of the awesome otherness of God but also a very personal relationship with that same God.

TODAY’S READINGS: Isaiah 22:19-23; Romans 11:33-36; Matthew 16:13-20 (121). “Who has known the mind of the Lord?”

MONDAY, AUGUST 25 MEMORIALS OF LOUIS; JOSEPH CALASANZ, PRIEST

A common calling to care Two men quite unlike each other, both saints, and both revered for similar reasons: their concrete love for the poor. In the mid-13th century, Saint Louis embraced the way of Saint Francis of Assisi and cared for the poor even as king of France. It is said that Louis had 13 guests from among the poor to eat with him daily. Saint Joseph Calasanz in the mid-16th century saw that the need to educate poor children was so important that he gave up a career in church law and politics. You can’t read of these lives without thinking of how simple true Christianity is: to care for the poor, the hungry, the forgotten.

TODAY’S READINGS: 2 Thessalonians 1:1-5, 11-12; Matthew 23:13-22 (425). “We always pray for you, that our God may . . . powerfully bring to fulfillment every good purpose.”

TUESDAY, AUGUST 26

Beautiful authority The stereotype of authority is that it’s the “heavy” in every situation. Sometimes corrupt, often self-serving, authority is actually intended to govern on behalf of the common good. We need authority like that to lead us in the direction of integrity and unity. Pope Clement of Rome wrote a prayer for those in authority: “Grant to them, Lord, health, peace, concord, and stability, so that they may exercise without offense the sovereignty that you have given them.” The more questionable the leadership, the more they need your prayers!

TODAY’S READINGS: 2 Thessalonians 2:1-3a, 14-17; Matthew 23:23-26 (426). “Let no one deceive you in any way.”

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 27

Do what you say The word hypocrite comes from the Greek for “one who acts on a stage” and means “a person who puts on a false appearance of virtue or religion.” Hypocrisy was one of Jesus’ frequent targets, and the criticism of hypocrisy has played a major role in Christian moral life ever since. Those who say one thing and do another, who want people to think they are something different than what they really are, or who hold others to standards they themselves don’t keep fall under this ignominious title. The simple antidote to hypocrisy comes from

integrity: consistency between your thoughts and actions and between those actions and what you expect of others.

TODAY’S READINGS: 2 Thessalonians 3:6-10, 16-18; Matthew 23:27-32 (427). “On the outside you appear righteous, but inside you are filled with hypocrisy and evildoing.”

THURSDAY, AUGUST 28 MEMORIAL OF AUGUSTINE, BISHOP, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH

It’s not too late Ever have a moment when you feel as if you have wasted or frittered away much of your life? Take heart: No less than Saint Augustine felt the same way when he penned these lines in his famous Confessions: “Too late have I loved you, O Beauty of ancient days, yet ever new! Too late I loved you! . . . You were with me, but I was not with you.” Having had this realization, Augustine went on to achieve great things. It is never too late to make a contribution for good with your own life.

TODAY’S READINGS: 1 Corinthians 1:1-9; Matthew 24:42-51 (428). “You are not lacking in any spiritual gift.”

FRIDAY, AUGUST 29 MEMORIAL OF THE PASSION OF JOHN THE

BAPTIST

Whom do you live for? It may be odd to reflect on John the Baptist by referring to Salome, the young woman who danced for and pleased King Herod. In the gospel she is not named nor is her dance described as lewd, but composer Richard Strauss used both of these traditions in his opera Salome, emphasizing Salome’s obsession with John as an object of desire. In consistently tense music, this operatic scene starkly illustrates the radical difference between one who lives for satisfaction of her own desires and John who lives—and dies—only for truth and for Jesus. Can you say with John: “He must increase; I must decrease”?

TODAY’S READINGS: 1 Corinthians 1:17-25 (429); Mark 6:17-29 (429/634). “I want you to give me at once on a platter the head of John the Baptist.”

SATURDAY, AUGUST 30 MEMORIAL OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

Run like a girl The spiritual life is often described in sporting terms: Fight the good fight, run the race, win the crown. These come from an ancient Greek culture immersed in the excitement of athletic games and competition. But there are other ways to triumph, spiritually speaking. Mary of Nazareth employed the gospel paradox of the weak surpassing the strong through utter reliance on God’s promises. Her “race” was a domestic constancy in birth and death, security and danger and challenge. Competition isn’t the only way to win.

TODAY’S READINGS: 1 Corinthians 1:26-31; Matthew 25:14-30 (430). “God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong.”
