Jesus used parables for one purpose only: to add strength to the point He wanted to make in His teachings. Jesus’ parable of the wise and foolish virgins has only one point as well, which is that we all need to be ready. Have we truly welcomed Christ into our hearts? There is no time to waste for we do not know the day nor the hour when Christ will return as He promised. If we take for granted His teachings, and fail to take seriously what is expected of us as Catholics, we allow worldly things to cast a deep sleep over us. Anesthetized by false promises and temporary pleasures, we end up disconnecting ourselves from Christ and from one another. The invitation is to stay awake by praying and deepening our relationship with Christ and His Church by actively participating at Mass.

Our Sunday gathering is a foretaste of the great banquet that awaits us in Heaven. Jesus, the bridegroom, constantly comes to greet us at the Holy Altar. We are totally sound asleep when excuses to miss Mass get in the way. Let's help each other stay awake, by encouraging Mass attendance each Sunday!

Jesús utiliza parábolas con un solo propósito, añadir fuerza a lo que desea comunicar con Sus enseñanzas. La parábola de Jesús de las jóvenes, unas descuidadas y otras previsoras, nos comunica que debemos estar listos. ¿Hemos, verdaderamente, recibido a Cristo en nuestro corazón? No hay tiempo que perder, porque no conocemos el día ni la hora en que Cristo regresará, como lo ha prometido. Si no tomamos en serio sus enseñanzas, y fallamos en hacer lo que como Católicos estamos llamados a realizar, estamos permitiendo que lo mundano habite en nosotros. Anestesiados por falsas promesas y placeres temporeros, terminamos desconectándonos de Cristo y de nuestros hermanos. La invitación es a permanecer alerta y a profundizar en nuestra relación con Cristo y Su Iglesia, participando activamente en la Misa.

Nuestro encuentro el domingo es un anticipo al Gran Banquete que nos espera en el Cielo. Jesús, el Novio, constantemente viene a recibirnos en el Santo Altar. Y, nos quedamos completamente dormidos cuando permitimos que cualquier excusa nos impida llegar a Misa. ¡Vamos a ayudarnos unos a otros a permanecer alerta, fomentando la asistencia a Misa todos los domingo.

The last topic of our discussion was the accompaniment of the Eucharistic Lord with the families, through the best and worst of times. That said, what if conflicts and differences in the family become irreconcilable? What if, in spite of great effort, things don’t work out? What’s next? In a beautiful, off-the-cuff discourse on the family that Pope Francis gave in Philadelphia, he spoke of how the family united in love is the dream of God. The family reflects who God is – the Truth, the Good and the Beautiful. But we can’t deny that human factors and the drama of life place a heavy influence on many families. We can’t deny that not all families turn out to be a beautiful dream, but can instead, be a nightmare. How does the Lord walk with those who deal with the reality of a broken family? Do they have a place in the Church? Can they ultimately be

assisted with the help of the Sacraments? More specifically, with Communion? The debate is still ongoing. People can’t seem to agree on the ‘vague’ concept of what Pope Francis meant in Amoris Lataetia by asking the Church’s ministers to walk with divorced and remarried Catholics with a compassionate sense of ‘pastoral discernment.’ Allow me to share with you some thoughts from my own limited experience. A while back, a lady wrote to me. She stated that she had just moved to Orlando and that she was divorced and wondered if she’d be allowed to receive Holy Communion. I replied to the email first by welcoming her to St. James and to our Sunshine State. I said to her that I was well aware of the challenges in making a transition to a new place. As for her question, per Church teaching while it was unfortunate that a divorce happened, it was not a sin. Therefore, nothing would stop her from receiving Communion. She could not do so only if she had remarried without first getting an annulment from the previous marriage. The woman wrote back stating that she had in fact remarried. She did not get an annulment because it was expensive. She also did not wish to have any contact with her ex-husband. I replied, telling her that the process of annulment had been made universally free of charge. As for getting in contact with her former spouse, by law we needed to notify him (just like a civil divorce), but he did not need to be a part of this process at all. I offered to sit down and chat with her in person and let her know that I would be honored to accompany her through the process. She responded saying that she was surprised by how harsh, judgmental and unkind it was to keep her from receiving Communion. She expressed that Pope Francis had forgiven those who were divorced and remarried and that St. James was being unwelcoming and not being Christ-like. She would go and look elsewhere. Sadly, that was the last I heard from her. I honestly was so baffled by this exchange. Did she really want help in the first place, or was she simply looking for a free pass? And when I couldn’t give it to her, then the Church was being harsh and unwelcoming? To be continued….

El último tópico de nuestra discusión fue la compañía de Jesús Eucarístico con las familias, en los buenos y en los malos tiempos. Habiendo dicho esto, ¿qué sucedería si los conflictos y las diferencias en las familias son

irreconciliables? ¿Qué sucede si después de muchos esfuerzos, los conflictos y diferencias no se pueden resolver? ¿Qué hacemos entonces?

En un bello discurso que el Santo Padre Francisco ofreció en Filadelfia sobre la familia, él habló de cómo la familia unida en amor es el sueño de Dios. La familia refleja que Dios es la Verdad, lo Bueno y lo Precioso. Pero, no podemos negar que factores humanos y el drama de la vida influyen sobre las familias. No podemos negar que no todas las familias son un bello sueño, algunas son una pesadilla. ¿Cómo camina el Señor con aquellos que viven la realidad de una familia rota? ¿Tienen algún lugar en la Iglesia? Por último, ¿se les puede asistir con la ayuda de los Sacramentos? Específicamente con la Comunión.

El debate sigue. Las personas no pueden llegar a un acuerdo sobre el “no claro” concepto del Papa Francisco en Amoris Lataetia, al pedirles a los ministros de la Iglesia a caminar con los Católicos divorciados y vueltos a casar con sentido de compasión y discernimiento pastoral. Permítanme compartir con ustedes algunos pensamientos de mi experiencia limitada.

Rev. Carlos José Cabán, SDB Padre Carlos José Cabán-Vázquez, SDB comenzó su formación sacerdotal en 1994 en Abonito, PR. Completó estudios en Filosofía y Educación en la República Dominicana. En Roma, el Padre Carlos completó su formación inicial en teología. Fue ordenado sacerdote en Aguadilla, PR en el 2005, donde su primera obediencia lo llevó a la Parroquia San Francisco de Sales en Cataño, PR. Después de tres años trabajando allí como titular de la Pastoral Juvenil, en el 2008 Padre Carlos fue enviado a Jarabacoa, República Dominica a cargo de los aspirantes a Salesianos. En 2009, fue enviado a trabajar en el Instituto Politécnico Industrial de Santiago por 4 años. En el vuelve a su tierra natal para trabajar en la Parroquia San José Obrero de Aguadilla durante dos años como Director de la Comunidad Salesiana, administrador y encargado de la Pastoral Juvenil. En Orocovis, Puerto Rico, fue Párroco Interino y Director de la Comunidad Salesiana de la Parroquia San Juan Bautista. Padre Carlos fue asignado a San Juan Vianney en agosto del 2016.

Le respondí, primeramente dándole la bienvenida a la Catedral Santiago Apóstol y a nuestro Estado de la Florida. Le dije que estaba bien consciente de los retos de una transición a un nuevo lugar. En cuanto a su pregunta, por enseñanza de la Iglesia, a pesar de lo desafortunado de un divorcio, esto no era pecado. Por lo tanto, no le impedía recibir la Comunión. Sin embargo, no podía recibir la Comunión si se había vuelto a casar sin antes haber obtenido una anulación del primer matrimonio.

La señora me escribió para atrás que sí se había vuelto a casar, que nunca obtuvo una anulación porque era muy caro y además no quería tener ningún contacto con su primer esposo. Le contesté diciéndole que el proceso de anulación era universalmente gratis. Y en cuanto al contacto con su primer esposo, por ley le tenemos que notificar (al igual que en un divorcio civil), pero él no tenía que ser parte del proceso. Me ofrecí a dialogar con ella el asunto en persona. Sería un honor para mí acompañarla en el proceso.

Me envió un mensaje diciendo que le sorprendía lo duro, crítico y cruel que era negarle la Comunión. Expresó que el Papa Francisco había perdonado a los divorciados y vueltos a casar, que la Catedral de Santiago Apóstol era poco acogedora y no reflejaba la imagen de Cristo. Ella buscaría en otro lugar. Lamentablemente, esa fue la última vez que supe de ella. Sinceramente, esto me desconcertó.

¿Qué era lo que buscaba? ¿Ayuda, o simplemente estaba buscando un pase gratis? Y, cuando no se lo pude dar, la iglesia era dura y poco acogedora. Continuaremos……..
