Lenten Retreat with Fr. Paul Fagan, C.P. Passionist Preacher

Fr. Paul is a Passionist preacher from Pelham, NY. He will be preaching at all the masses starting with the 5pm Mass on March 7, and again on Sunday, March 8 at the 8, 9:15 and 12 noon masses. The Lenten retreat begins on Monday, March 9, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons at 1pm and again at 7pm in the evenings of each day. There will be a closing mass on Wednesday evening.

Fr. Paul attended St. Louis University and received a BSSW degree in Social Work in 1976. He worked for 4 1/2 years for the Ill. Dept. of Children and Family Services as a Child Care Worker with abused and neglected children and their families and teenagers and was involved with specialized adoptions.

Fr. Paul entered the Passionist Novitiate in Pittsburg, and took vows in 1982. In 1986 he received his Masters of Divinity with a Word and Worship Specialization. He was ordained in 1986 and assigned to the Bishop Mallow Retreat House in Jamaica Queens for 8 years. He served on the Provincial Council and spent 11 years as the Director of the Passionist Spiritual Center. In 2012 Fr. Paul finished his Doctor of Ministry Degree in Preaching. In 2016 Fr. Paul was named the Director of the Passionist Communications and the Executive Producer and Host of the Passionist Sunday Mass television ministry that is televised every Sunday. Fr. Paul loves sports and is an avid marathon runner. With all he has accomplished, Fr. Paul’s greatest joy is preaching the Word of God.

Wielki Post - Jego Znaki i Symbole

Okres czterdziestu dni Wielki Post trwa 40 dni. Jest to liczba symboliczna na oznaczenie specjalnego czasu przygotowania na rzeczywiste spotkanie z Bogiem. Człowiek, z racji swojej małości i grzeszności, potrzebuje stanąć przed Bogiem odpowiednio przygotowany, a do tego potrzebny mu jest najpierw czas. Prorocy długo przygotowywali się na spotkanie z Bogiem, szczególnie wtedy, kiedy czekała ich ważna do spełnienia misja. Mojżesz przez 40 dni i nocy przebywał na górze Synaj poszcząc, by otrzymać wreszcie tablice 10 przykazań. Eliasz, mocą pokarmu niebieskiego, szedł przez 40 dni i 40 nocy aż do Bożej góry Horeb, by doświadczyć spotkania z Bogiem w postaci cichego poszumu wiatru. Nawet pogańscy Niniwici, dzięki pracy Jonasza, potrafili przez 40 dni pościć, by przebłagać Boga i przekonać Go do ocalenia ich miasta od zagłady. Tym bardziej Jezus, idąc za przykładem tego symbolicznego znaku, udaje się na pustynię, by przez 40 dni przygotować się do swojej misji zbawczej. Każdy z nas w okresie Wielkiego Postu otrzymuje więc swoje 40 dni, czas na przygotowanie do szczególnego spotkania z Bogiem w tajemnicy zbawienia. Przebywanie na pustyni Okres 40 dni przygotowania na spotkanie z Bogiem ma również szczególne miejsce: na pustyni, z dala od zgiełku świata i jego uciech, tzn. w ciszy, tam, gdzie rzeczywiście można Boga usłyszeć w głębi swojego serca. Oddalenie pustynne, niekoniecznie musi oznaczać dokładnie pustynię. Chodzi raczej o każde miejsce odosobnienia, które bardziej sprzyja temu spotkaniu. Prorocy i rzesze świętych z reguły wybierali pustynie, gdzie z powodu braku pokarmu i wody, doświadczali swojej niewystarczalności, a tym samym głębszego pragnienia Boga. Taki jest również przypadek Jezusa, który po ludzku chce nam pokazać, gdzie najpierw należy szukać Boga: z dala od zgiełku świata w głębokiej ciszy własnego serca. Tę pustynię czy oddalenie musimy sobie zapewnić sami, żyjąc z dala od hulanek i zabaw tego świata. Posypanie głowy popiołem Gest posypania głowy popiołem jest pierwszym momentem i znakiem wejścia człowieka na drogę spotkania z Bogiem. Przebywanie na pustyni, by nie było jałowe, wiąże się najpierw z przyjęciem odpowiedniej postawy wewnętrznej człowieka: przyznanie się do własnej niegodności i grzeszności. Jest to znak uznania swojej pozycji i miejsca w obliczu Boskiego majestatu i miłosierdzia, które nazywa się pokorą. W tradycji Izraela, oprócz innych znaczeń: smutku, bólu i żałoby, wyrażał go zewnętrzny gest posypania głowy popiołem. Stawiał on człowieka w prawidłowej pokornej postawie do Boga przypominając, że jest nikim (prochem) ze swoją pychą („Z prochu powstałeś i w proch się obrócisz”), dlatego potrzebuje nawrócenia, co przypominają słowa kapłana podczas posypania popiołem: „Nawracajcie się i wierzcie w Ewangelię”. Post, jałmużna i modlitwa Postawa pokory (wyrażona w posypaniu głowy popiołem) wprowadza człowieka w atmosferę pustyni, czyli koniecznego odosobnienia, gdzie odbywa się powolny proces spotkania z Bogiem. Atmosferę tę stwarzają: post, jałmużna i modlitwa, trzy podstawowe biblijne działania człowieka jako swoiste znaki jego nawrócenia i pokory. Wszystkie te elementy były wcześniej wykorzystywane przez proroków Izraela i świętych Kościoła, już nie mówiąc o samym Jezusie, który na pustyni pościł i modlił się, by w swoim czasie oddać swoje życie na krzyżu. Działania te w efekcie są wyrazem naszej miłości, wewnętrznej zadumy i powagi nad tajemnicami zbawienia, które wprowadzają w samo centrum środowiska Bożego. One w sumie stanowią treść przebywania na pustynnym odosobnieniu, by uczyć nas słuchania woli Bożej i wrażliwości na prawdziwe potrzeby drugiego człowieka.
