JESUS’ WAY Today’s readings present a contrast between “Jesus’ way” and the “old way.” An example of the old way is the law given to Moses and Aaron about leprosy: the leper was unclean and cast out of the community. Jesus’ way is the opposite: the leper is reached out to, touched, and finally cured. Nor ought we think of the “old way” as restricted to the days of Moses and Aaron, or even to the “old” testa-ment. The difference between the old way and Jesus’ way arises in own lives. We still choose, every day, to live in our old way or in Jesus’ way. Jesus dared to touch a leper, disregarding the old way. The leper then was changed forever. He felt a call-ing. He couldn’t keep himself from proclaiming that he had been touched by Jesus (even though Jesus told him not to!). EL CAMINO DE JESÚS Las lecturas de hoy presentan un contraste entre el “camino de Jesús” y el “camino viejo”. Un ejemplo del camino viejo es la ley que recibieron Moisés y Aarón acerca de la lepra: el leproso era impuro y se echaba fuera de la comunidad. El camino de Jesús es lo con-trario: el leproso se acerca, es tocado y finalmente cu-rado. The following article was published by the Diocese of Lake Charles to help the faithful understand why we were so underinsured.

INSURANCE AND HURRICANES Every year, the Diocese of Lake Charles reviews and ana-lyzes the property liability insurance for every school, parish, building and department within its five-parish territory. All structures and entities are combined for insurance coverage for economies of scale, bigger dis-counts and spreading of risk. The Diocese currently partners with the Catholic Mutual Group (CMG) to obtain this coverage. CMG is an organi-zation that is a part of the Catholic Church that focuses on providing more affordable insurance than can be found in the commercial insurance markets. It was founded by a group of Bishops in 1889 and provides in-surance coverage for over 125 dioceses and archdioceses in North America and 200 Catholic Religious Orders and Institutions in the U.S. and Canada. As part of the annual review, CMG engages an independ-ent third party who conducts a named storm analysis. This is taken into consideration every year as the Diocese of Lake Charles collaborates with its insurance partner to assess costs and benefits of coverage levels and premi-ums. The “named storm limit” of coverage for the Diocese is $30 million. In the most recent named storm analysis that was received and reviewed in the Spring of 2020, the report details every named storm and its correspond-ing damage experience in the Diocese of Lake Charles over the past 100 years. The total damages from all of the top 20 storms combined, before Laura and Delta, are only $42 million. In 2005, when Hurricane Rita made landfall as a Catego-ry 3 storm in Cameron Parish, the Diocese was covered with a “named storm limit” of $20 million. According to GC Analytics, the ground-up loss was over $4 million, well below the $20 million coverage limit in place at that time. Rita was the strongest storm in 48 years on record to hit Southwest Louisiana. Hurricane Audrey was the all-time highest damage storm to hit our area in 1957 with losses totaling a little more than $8 million. Taking a prudent approach moving forward, the Diocese increased its “named storm limit” to $30 million and continued doing so for the next 15 years. The annual pre-mium in 2020 was over $1 million for this coverage. The analysis conducted by GC Analytics estimated a hur-ricane loss of approximately $15 million every 1 in 100 years (or 1% chance in 2020), and further showed only a 1% probability that another loss of Category 3 strength would exceed $29 million. Hurricanes Laura and Delta caused $110 million in dam-ages to the properties of the Diocese of Lake Charles. This is off the charts and defies any historical trends and future modeling of any insurance “experts.” The chances of the Diocese suffering two back-to-back storms was considered “inconceivable” by the experts. Their projec-tions and recommendations were literally blown away. Rest assured, the Diocese will be taking all of this into consideration as it works towards the renewals for prop-erty insurance this spring.

LENTEN REGULATIONS

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. What is "fasting"? The minimum standard of fasting is to limit oneself to one full meal and two smaller meals that together do not equal the full meal. No eating be-tween meals. Who should fast? Catholics 18-59. Others are encouraged to voluntarily fast if able.

Fridays are days of abstinence from meat.

Who should abstain? Catholics 14 and older. Younger children should be encouraged to abstain and taught the purpose of it.

Who should not fast or abstain? Fasting and abstinence should never endanger one’s health. Avoiding some form of permissible entertainment or performing sacrificial acts of charity, for example, could replace the fasting and abstinence when health is a consideration.

A "Difficult Choice" Advocates of abortion often refer to the decision to have an abortion as a "difficult choice." Why is it a difficult choice? The reason is very simple and obvious. We all know that the unborn child is a person grow-ing inside the mother's womb. So, of course, it is "difficult". Choosing to terminate the life of another human being is a "difficult choice". If the unborn child was not a person, what would be so difficult about choosing to end his or her life? Is killing a cancer growing inside your body a "difficult choice" . Of course not. Dehumanizing the child is a vital strategy used by pro-abortionists to disguise the "difficult choice" that is being made. The baby is made to appear like the invading "blob of tissue"----like a cancerous growth. Why do we allow such deceit and victimization of the pre-born? PANDEMIC REMINDERS ♦ If you or someone in your household is ill, please do not

attend Mass. ♦ Holy water fonts are emptied. Holy Water is provided in

small containers at each entrance. Please limit one per family.

♦ To adhere to social distancing, please do not sit in the roped off pews. Please do not remove or tamper with the ropes.

♦ Please wear a mask, especially when in close proximity to others.

♦ Please avoid touching surfaces unnecessarily. All door handles are disinfected after each Mass.

♦ No shared missaletes in the pews. If you would like your own missalete to bring with you to Mass, you may pick one up at the Community Center during office hours. Limit one per family.

♦ The exchanging of the Sign of Peace is temporarily sus-pended.

♦ No hand holding during the Our Father. This is not a part of Catholic Liturgical tradition and should be avoid-ed regardless.

♦ Holy Communion may be brought by deacons/priests to the homebound upon request.

♦ Gloves cannot be worn while receiving Holy Commun-ion in the hand. The ministers will not place Our Lord on gloves. Particles of the Sacred Host can too easily stick to gloves.

♦ Mantengan el barbijo, especialmente cuando estén cerca de otras personas.

♦ Por favor evite tocar superficies innecesariamente. Todos los agarradores de las puertas se desinfectan después de cada Misa.

♦ No comparta misales en las bancas. Si desea que su pro-pio misal traiga el suyo consigo a misa, puede recoger uno del Salón Comunitario durante horarios de oficina. Limí-tese a uno por familia.

♦ El intercambio del Saludo de Paz se suspende temporal-mente.

♦ No agarrarse de las manos durante la oración del Padre Nuestro. Esto no forma parte de la tradición litúrgica ca-tólica y debe evitarse de todas maneras.

♦ La Santa Comunión puede ser llevada por diáconos/sacerdotes a las personas confinadas en sus casas, según previa solicitud.

OLQH Women’s Silent Retreat March 26-28 Sister Camille Martinez, SEC, will conduct the Our Lady Queen of Heaven Women’s Lenten Silent Retreat over the Palm Sunday weekend, March 26-28, 2021, at Saint Charles Center, 2151 Sam Houston Jones Parkway, in Moss Bluff. The theme of the retreat will be “Spot of Grace.” To register or for more information, contact An-drea Blanchard at 337-474-1788 or 337-794-9679. Private rooms only at $225 for the weekend. Scholarships availa-ble upon request for those in need of assistance.
