Wisdom, Strength

This ceiling painting by Laureti is found in the Constantine Room of the papal apartments. It is a symbolic celebration of the triumph of Christianity over paganism, set in a classical architectural space. The remains of a crushed Hermes lies broken in pieces on the floor, while a crucifix of Jesus Christ sits upon the pedestal. It is fitting that this painting crowns the papal hall honoring Constantine, the first Roman emperor to leave paganism and be baptized a Christian. Constantine had four basilicas built in Rome— including St. Peter’s—and gave Christians freedom of religion in the Roman Empire. The message is clear. The Romans worshiped statues of gods who were mere human creations and projections. In the statue’s place is not just another statue but a crucifix that reminds us of a reality, a historical event. God himself became human in Jesus Christ and showed his divine strength by emptying himself and being crushed by our sins in order to forgive and win back a rebellious humanity. This show of godly power through weakness is foolishness to the Gentiles and inconceivable to the Jews. Yet this humility and love is the wisdom that confounds and the strength that saves. Religion isn’t a business or human invention for personal enthronement. Jesus overturns this idea like he overturns the moneychangers’ tables. Worship of God is all about accepting his initiative and humbly responding in the obedience of faith and the purifying joy of love.

KEEP HOLY THE SABBATH

There’s no better way to deepen our Lenten practice than to review the Ten Commandments. The first three, having to do with our right relationship to God, get the most ink. The one we busy people probably have the most problem with is keeping holy the Sabbath. If we take this commandment literally, babies will go undiapered and dishes will stay on the table, or perhaps meals will not be served. The sick will go unattended and nothing that has anything to do with physical labor will be done. Is mental labor really work? How about changing that dirty diaper (poor baby!)?

We need to depend on God to discern how to observe real Sabbath time in our lives. The point of this commandment is that God has given us a great gift: one whole day per week when we are free to rest, worship God, sing, feast, love, and rejoice. As Psalm 19 proclaims: “The law of the LORD is perfect, / refreshing the soul” (19:8). Our Sabbath rest is a great gift, to be received from God with joy, not with nitpicking.

Orar

John Paul II Catholic School is excited to announce that junior Victoria Etheridge has been awarded the President’s Volunteer Service Award and has also been named a top runner-up in The 2018 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards in South Carolina. Both of these awards recognize Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and country.

As a JPII Golden Warrior, Victoria has taken up her SHIELD and put it in action. She has organized 23 service projects for young people and their families over the past five years as the creator of the program “VIC’s Vision: Volunteering Inspires Children.” In addition to her program’s projects, which have benefited a wide variety of groups and causes, Victoria has collected toys for hospitalized kids and raised awareness of bullying.

When asked what the award meant to her, she said it wasn’t about getting individual recognition, it’s about recognizing the impact youth can have by serving in their communities. It also brought back great memories of the people she has helped.

Congrats, Victoria. Job well done!

South Carolina’s Coalition for Mathematics & Science / S2TEM Centers SC recently awarded Mrs. Barbara Pittman the “Growing in SC: The Future of STEAM is Here” grant in the amount of $2500 for Heaven Scent: A Loofah Gourd Soap Project. Throughout the next year, students at SGGCS will have an opportunity to create a loofah gourd soap business using the school garden located in the back of the school. Students will be involved in all aspects of the project to include initiation, research and development, problem-solving, hands-on maintenance from planting through harvest, product planning, design packaging, marketing and sales and accounting. SGGCS will also be looking for skilled volunteers with knowledge, tools and brawn as well as garden enthusiasts. If you are interested in helping with ‘the next crop of GREAT problem solvers,” please contact Chris Trott at [email protected] or Barbara Pittman [email protected].

SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR THE SEASON OF LENT 8

* Participate at weekday Mass

* Visit the Adoration Chapel and spend time in prayer

* Pray the Rosary seeking the intercession of the Blessed Mother for personal spiritual renewal

* Call a friend who is going through some difficult times

* Visit a relative or friend in the hospital or Nursing Home

* Be more considerate of family members

* Eat less while remembering the starving and the hungryY do not waste food

* Avoid gossip which always causes non-productive ill feelings

* See the brighter side of life instead of being critical of the efforts of others

* Read the Sacred Scriptures in a consistent manner (for instance, read the Gospel of John, a chapter a day)

* Exercise patience with children Y they need your love and attention

* Pray for a spirit of tolerance that will respect the dignity of every human person

* Make a thorough examination of conscience followed by a wholesome celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation (that is, make a good confession)

* Pray for generous responses from our parish community to the call of Jesus in serving the Church through

Priesthood and Religious Life of women

* Pray for those in positions of leadership in the Church and in the world

* Show greater respect for the person and property of others

Just some suggestions others may come to mind from your experience of trying to live a good life. Mind you -- the devil is always very active when one tries to do God’s will and live by God’s standards. The devil is not a respecter of persons or positions in life. If he tried to tempt Jesus Himself then who are we?? He will try and, indeed, try very hard. Do not give him the satisfaction of accomplishment!

With love, Fr. Derrick

St. Patrick: A Figure of Faith

Presented by Michael J. Martocchio, Ph.D.

Director Office of Catechesis and Christian Initiation

Mid-March brings us the feast day of one of the most loved Saints in the

Church: St. Patrick. Both St. Patrick and his feast day have deep cultural significance, particularly for the Irish and Irish-Americans. Yet, St. Patrick also provides us with an example of faith that we can and should emulate in our lives. Join us on St. Patrick’s Day as we examine the true legacy of this great figure.
