God’s Promise of Real Treasure
If anyone can keep a promise, it’s God. His very
nature is to be faithful to his promises and to fulfill all he
has foretold. His promise after the fall of Adam and Eve
was to send us a Redeemer, to bring peace to
Jerusalem, and to reestablish his reign on earth. The
prophets continually reminded the chosen race of God’s
fidelity and, although things looked far from their
fulfillment, they insisted that God is faithful and would
deliver.
Jesus, the ultimate fulfillment of God’s promise,
comes in two
phases. First, by
coming as a baby in
Bethlehem. This
Incarnation and his
arrival as Savior is
what we’re preparing
to receive this
Advent. Extra
prayers, generous
giving of your time,
and special sacrifices are the best way to ready your
soul for his coming.
Jesus’ Second Coming will bring to completion what
he started on the cross. His glorious return, which all of
creation will foretell in those last days, is when the full
effects of Christ’s victory on the cross will be seen at the
judgment of all living creatures.
The advice for all Christians in this period of waiting
and preparation is to keep watch; to not allow the delay
to lead us to drowsiness. Don’t let the vanities of this
world dazzle us, for in time, they will become dust.
God promises real treasures that will endure forever,
and as we know, God keeps his promises.
— Fr. Mark Haydu, LC
THE PROMISE OF JUSTICE
We are in fairly good company when we ask God for justice. Often enough we hear and agree with the lament
of the people of Israel asking God why the wicked prosper. However, when we call out for justice, we usually want
someone to get his or her comeuppance. God’s justice is something other than this, of course. God’s justice
comprises a wonderful rightness between God and humankind.
Today, Jeremiah looks ahead to a time when a just one will sprout from the shorn-off stump of Jesse of the
house and family of David. Life was not fair in Jeremiah’s time. Israel’s kings held the promise of God’s fidelity, but
it was difficult to see how God’s promise could be realized through them.
Nevertheless, Jeremiah lifts his voice and announces that the Promised One will come. Luke’s Gospel echoes
that announcement, and Paul is filled with sturdy encouragement. And so Advent begins with a promise.

The next meeting of the Catholic Book Club
will take place on Friday, December 14, from
9:30 a.m. -11:00 a.m. at St. Gregory the Great
Catholic School. The December selection is Caryll
Houselander’s “The Reed of God.” This spiritual classic
takes a look at the human side of the Blessed Virgin
Mary. The author, a British woman who has been
acclaimed as a poet and mystic, said that she had to get
Mary off a pedestal to be able to understand how God
could use her as a reed through which he could play his
music—and save the world.
All are welcome!

Oplatki Christmas Wafer
Available Now
The tradition of the Oplatki originated in
Poland during Early Christian times.
The Oplatki are enjoyed by families, typically right
before the Christmas Eve meal. The entire family gathers
around the table with the Oplatki. Generally the eldest
member of the family will begin the ritual by breaking off a
piece of the wafer and passing it to the other family
members with a blessing
The significance of the Oplatki Christmas wafer is that
it shadows the Eucharistic meal that Catholics participate in
at each Mass. .
Each package includes four
Oplatki Christmas wafers.
Available at the Parish Office for $2.00.
Limited supply.

While students in grades 1-6 were mindful of all they were thankful for during the days leading up to
Thanksgiving, students in Pre-K and K held special celebrations. The Pre-K class shared a special Thanksgiving
lunch with our neighbors, the Bluffton Township Fire Station. The students and firefighters ate together in one of
the truck bays, went on a tour of the fire station and then much to the delight of the kids, received a ride back to
school in the fire trucks complete with lights flashing and sirens blaring. Kindergarten shared a special
Thanksgiving lunch with each other. They ate as Pilgrim men and women around one big table and feasted on
such traditional Thanksgiving foods as turkey, pumpkin pie, apple pie and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

You are invited to listen in on the “meditation” portion of a recent
St. Vincent de Paul Society meeting:
For our meditation today I would like to share with you a shortened version of a long but beautiful poem I have
enjoyed reading now and then, for over 50 years.
I find it it is worth examining because it can help us keep our perspective and maintain a healthy attitude toward
clients we visit especially when we first meet someone whose appearance or demeanor is in anyway distasteful to
us. The story is about a young knight, Sir Launfal, who, in the springtime of his life is preparing to go out in search
of The Holy Grail, the chalice used by Christ at the last supper. Launfal is filled with enthusiasm, hope, optimism,
and all that goes along with youth, and the beautiful spring morning on which he sets out. But as he crosses the
drawbridge from his castle he encounters a leper who is begging at the edge of the stream. The sight of the leper
strikes Launfal as a gruesome blot on the beautiful June morning. The leper looked awful: both his clothes and his
body were eye sores; and our poet Lowell says: “A loathing came over Launfal and made his skin crawl”...so the
knight just quickly tossed a coin and rode on.
Years go by. Launfal sees much of life in his travels, has lots of exposure to reality, has learned the meaning
of human suffering, and his experiences have taught him that understanding and sympathy make us all brothers
and sisters. Lowell says, as Launfal returns:
“Deep in his soul, the sign he wore:
The badge of the suffering, and the poor.”
He is returning in winter (much different from the spring morning on which he left). It is cold. He is old and
gray. He is unsuccessful and empty-handed. And now he meets the same leper at the edge of the same moat
around his castle. But Launfal is different...more experienced, more compassionate to the leper:
And Launfal said, “I behold in thee
An image of him who died on the tree;
Thou also hast had thy crown of thorns,
Thou also hast had the world‘s buffets and scorns,
And to thy life were not denied
The wounds in the hands and feet and side.
Mild Mary’s Son, acknowledge me;
Behold, through him, I give to Thee!
Now Launfal breaks the ice in that moat, scoops out a drink of water for the leper, then he reaches in his
saddle bag for the last of his bread, and shares a meal with the leper...and cares for him.
Now The leper responds to Launfal:
And the voice that was calmer than silence said,
“Lo, it is I, be not afraid!
In many climes, without avail,
Thou hast spent thy life for the Holy Grail;
Behold it is here,—this cup which thou
Didst fill at the streamlet for me but now;
This crust is my body broken for thee,
This water, His blood that died on the tree;
The Holy Supper is kept, indeed,
In whatso we share with another’s need,—
Not what we give, but what we share,
For the gift without the giver is bare;
Who gives himself with his alms feeds three,
Himself, his hungering neighbor, and Me.”
The poem is called the VISION of Sir Launfal for two reasons: 1) The heart of the poem is actually a dream (a
vision) Launfal had the night before he was to leave. And 2) It changed his outlook...his vision...forever after. He
found the Holy Grail without having to go on his quest. And he opened his castle to the needs of the poor from
then on.
All of us here have had some version of Launfal’s awakening or we would not be doing what we do. But I hope
you agree, what you have heard of Lowells poem is a nice reminder of how we should accept...without
reservation...all of the voices who call on our Help Line...and all of the faces who open the doors...of clients we are
called to serve...either in person as visitors...or through the other vital services we perform.
