Cetacean Research & Rescue Unit (CRRU)
Dedicated to the understanding, welfare, conservation, and protection of cetaceans
Formed in 1997, the CRRU is a small non-profit research organization in northeast Scotland dedicated to the welfare, conservation, and protection of whales, dolphins, and porpoises through scientific investigation, education, and the provision of a 24-hour rescue service for stranded animals.
Summer Field Courses with the CRRU
Each year the CRRU offers a number of unique opportunities for a seasonal corps of trainees to join us in Gardenstown as contributing members of the research and rescue team.
The courses are run in the form of an 12-day educational placement, and as a trainee with the CRRU you will have the opportunity to learn about the whales and dolphins of the Moray Firth and their dynamic marine environment first hand – working closely alongside a dedicated and knowledgeable team of biologists whilst at the same time providing crucial support for the organisation's research programme. As you participate in ongoing field studies, you will learn and apply the principles of field research design (accompanied by structured lectures and field tuition), undertake training in marine mammal rescue techniques and gain a
personal understanding of the conservation issues which drive the research, rescue and conservation activities of this small but dedicated charity.
The most important requirements for any participant are enthusiasm, the ability and willingness to learn and work under often difficult (but rewarding) field conditions and the open-mindedness and sense of humour to work, live and communicate with other people of mixed nationality and background.
The research unit providing this opportunity is not a professional tourist organisation but a well-organised team of research scientists. Therefore, as part of a working team, you will be expected to participate in all activities of the day, including your share of basic domestic duties such as cooking, cleaning and maintenance. Flexibility is also required with respect to sleeping arrangements, as single bedrooms or sleeping facilities only for couples are not usually available.
Why should you join this programme?
For a truly unforgettable experience at the very least. Apart from the support you will be giving the project, this will be an extraordinary learning experience for you. You will learn and apply new skills, experience new cultures, make new friends and learn much about yourself and others in the process. Students and recent graduates may see this as an opportunity to acquire valuable experience with marine mammals and even gain course credits.

Civil Engineering Design Competition for Scottish
Schools and Colleges 2018/19
#abertay #civilengineering #dundeedesign
Imagine a theme park with clear views of Dundee’s waterfront … what
would your students design?
Our competition has been inspired to capitalise on Dundee’s rejuvenation.
This opportunity will give budding engineers the chance to get creative in response to a hypothetical
tender, designing an attractive and functional theme park in keeping with geometric requirements in
an attempt to win the bid.
The competition
Based on our attached design brief, students will be encouraged to come up with a conceptual
design idea for the whole park, and a detailed design for a main attraction. The theme of the park
must be ‘Dundee’ and must cater to a wide age range.
Who’s it for?
Our competition is for 4th – 6th year secondary school pupils, as well as college students who are
considering a career in engineering, construction, or design. We’d like to encourage group work on
this project, so group sizes should be between three and five people.
How to sign up
If any of your students would like to form a team and take part, please send us the following
information by Friday 26th October 2018:
• Team name • Team members • School/college name
Submitting a design
The deadline for all submissions is 5pm on Friday 14th December 2018. Detailed submission
information can be found within the design brief. We’ll accept multiple submissions from any one
school or college, and would prefer if these were sent by a member of staff. After the submission
deadline, we’ll upload each submission video to the competition page on the Abertay University
website (www.abertay.ac.uk). Teams will get to see the ideas other schools/teams have come up
with.
Keeping us in the loop
Over the next few months, we’d love to see how your teams are progressing with their designs. We
encourage you to tag us on social media (@AbertayUni) using the hashtags above. Images/short
videos/comments on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram – all are welcome.
