GATHERING IN GOD’S NAME Entrance hymn

oly, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! early in the morning our song shall rise to thee;

holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty! God in three persons, blessèd Trinity!

Holy, holy, holy! all the saints adore thee, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee, which wert and art and evermore shalt be.

Holy, holy, holy! though the darkness hide thee, though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see, only thou art holy, there is none beside thee perfect in power, in love, and purity.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! all thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea; holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty! God in three persons, blessèd Trinity!

TEXT: Reginald Herber (1783–1826), 2nd Bishop of Calcutta, of which diocese the Anglican churches of Australia were then a part;

MUSIC: ‘Nicæa’, John Bacchus Dykes (1823–76).

Let us pray.

lmighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the

Confession & absolution ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’

Let us therefore bring our sins before the one true God, in penitence and faith.

erciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, and in what we

have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart, we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

lmighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith, pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all

goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Collect for Trinity Sunday Let us pray.

We pray in silence.

LMIGHTY AND EVERLASTING GOD, you have given to us your servants grace by the confession of a true faith to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity, and in the power of the divine majesty to worship the

Unity: keep us steadfast in this faith, and evermore defend us from all adversities, for you live and reign, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Hebrew scripture

A reading from the Book Exodus.

he LORD said to Moses, ‘Cut two tablets of stone like the former ones, and I will write on the tablets the words that were on the former tablets, which

you broke. Be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai and present yourself there to me, on the top of the mountain. No one shall come up with you, and do not let anyone be seen throughout all the mountain; and do not let flocks or herds graze in front of that mountain.’ So Moses cut two tablets of stone like the former ones; and he rose early in the morning and went up on Mount Sinai, as the LORD had commanded him, and took in his hand the two tablets of stone. The LORD descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name, ‘The LORD’. The LORD passed before him, and pro-claimed,

‘The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for the thousandth generation, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, yet by no means clearing the guilty, but visiting the iniquity of the parents upon the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.’

And Moses quickly bowed his head towards the earth, and worshipped. Exodus 34·1–8

Psalm Lord our Governor, how excellent is thy Name in all the world :

thou that hast set thy glory above the heavens! Out of the mouth of very babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength, because of thine enemies :

that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger. For I will consider thy heavens, even the works of thy fingers :

the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained. What is man, that thou art mindful of him :

and the son of man, that thou visitest him? Thou madest him lower than the angels :

to crown him with glory and worship. Thou makest him to have dominion of the works of thy hands :

and thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet; All sheep and oxen :

yea, and the beasts of the field; The fowls of the air, and the fishes of the sea :

and whatsoever walketh through the paths of the seas.

TEXT: Psalm 8·1–8, Domine, Dominus noster; MUSIC: Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (1852–1924).

Epistle A reading from the Second Letter of Paul to the Corinthians.

inally, brothers and sisters, farewell. Put things in order, listen to my appeal, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be

with you. Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the saints greet you.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you.

Gospel The Lord be with you.

And also with you. The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.

Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

OW THE ELEVEN DISCIPLES WENT TO GALILEE, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in

heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’

Matthew 28·16–20

This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Sermon Given by the Reverend Sarah Stapleton, the Assistant Curate.

Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church.

E BELIEVE IN ONE GOD, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of the people We come boldly to the throne of grace,

praying to the almighty God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit for mercy and grace.

We plead before your throne in heaven.

Father of heaven, whose love profound a ransom for our souls has found:

We pray for the world, created by your love, for its nations and governments.

We pray for your world as we respond to the challenges of a global pandemic, giving thanks for healthcare workers, and praying for those places worst affected by disease.

We pray for the United State of America confronted by racism and violence as we grieve for the brutal history of racism in our communities: heal our hearts and the whole world from fear and ignorance. Teach us your justice, love, mercy and grace.

We plead before your throne in heaven.

Almighty Son, incarnate Word, our Prophet, Priest, Redeemer, Lord:

We pray for the Church, created for your glory, for its ministry to reflect those works of yours.

Bless Kay our Archbishop and the life and ministry of this Cathedral Church, the Dean and all who work and worship here, and especially the Cathedral office staff.

Extend to us your salvation, growth, mercy and grace. We plead before your throne in heaven.

Eternal Spirit, by whose breath the soul is raised from sin and death:

We pray for families and individuals, created in your image, for the lonely, the bereaved, the sick and the dying, and all who are on our hearts this morning.

Breathe on them the breath of life and bring them to your mercy and grace.

We plead before your throne in heaven.

Thrice holy! Father, Spirit, Son, Mysterious Godhead, Three in One:

We pray for ourselves, for your Church, for all whom we remember before you.

Bring us all to bow before your throne in heaven, to receive life and pardon, mercy and grace for all eternity, as we worship you, saying,

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE SACRAMENT Greeting of peace

Peace to you from God our heavenly Father. Peace from his Son Jesus Christ who is our peace. Peace from the Holy Spirit, the life-giver.

The peace of the triune God be always with you And also with you.

Offertory hymn

bind unto myself today the strong name of the Trinity,

by invocation of the same, the Three in One, and One in Three.

2.I bind unto myself today the virtues of the star-lit heaven, the glorious sun’s life-giving ray, the whiteness of the moon at even, the flashing of the lightning free, the whirling wind’s tempestuous shocks,

the stable earth, the deep salt sea around the old eternal rocks.

3.I bind unto myself today the power of God to hold and lead, his eye to watch, his might to stay, his ear to hearken to my need; the wisdom of my God to teach, his hand to guide, his shield to ward, the word of God to give me speech, his heavenly host to be my guard.

4.Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me; Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ in quiet, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

5.I bind unto myself the name, the strong name of the Trinity, by invocation of the same, the Three in One, and One in Three, of whom all nature hath creation, eternal Father, Spirit, Word. Praise to the Lord of my salvation: salvation is of Christ the Lord.

The Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you.

And also with you. Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

LL GLORY AND HONOUR, be yours always and everywhere, mighty Creator, everliving God. We give you thanks and praise for your Son,

our Saviour Jesus Christ, who by the power of your Spirit was born of Mary and lived as one of us.

By his death on the cross and rising to new life, he offered the one true sacrifice for sin and obtained an eternal deliverance for his people.

Through him, you have revealed to us your glory in the community of your love, three persons, one God, ever to be worshipped and adored.

Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying:

Sanctus

Michael Dudman (1938–94)

ERCIFUL GOD, we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and wine,

and we pray that by your Word and Holy Spirit, we who eat and drink them may be partakers of Christ’s body and blood.

On the night he was betrayed Jesus took bread; and when he had given you thanks he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying,

‘Take, eat. This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’

After supper, he took the cup, and again giving thanks he gave it to his disciples, saying,

‘Drink from this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’

15

Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded: proclaiming his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again, we celebrate, with this bread and this cup, his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world.

deacon Let us proclaim the mystery of faith.

Michael Dudman (1938–94)

Renew us by your Holy Spirit unite us in the body of your Son, and bring us with all your people into the joy of your eternal kingdom;

through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom, and in whom, in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father, in songs of never-ending praise:

Michael Dudman (1938–94)

The Lord’s Prayer As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray.

UR FATHER IN HEAVEN, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

Hymn of thanksgiving

ove is the touch of intangible joy; love is the force that no fear can destroy;

love is the goodness we gladly applaud: God is where love is, for love is of God.

Love is the lilt in a lingering voice; love is the hope that can make us rejoice; love is the cure for the frightened and flawed: God is where love is, for love is of God.

Love is the light in the tunnel of pain; love is the will to be whole once again; love is the trust of a friend on the road: God is where love is, for love is of God.

Love is the Maker and Spirit and Son; love is the kingdom their will has begun; love is the path which the saints all have trod: God is where love is, for love is of God.

TEXT: Alison M. Robertson (b. 1940); MUSIC:’Slane’, first published as ‘With My Love on the Road’

in Patrick Joyce’s ‘Old Irish Folk Music and Songs’ in 1909.

Blessing OD THE HOLY TRINITY make you strong in faith and love, defend you on every side, and guide you in all truth and peace; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and

remain with you always. Amen.
