Pastoral Ponderings

What does it look like when Jesus calls? Like any interaction with the Lord, there is usually a progression from one stage to the next, and our journey through Lent is much the same. It is a miniature course

of our deepening relationship with Jesus. The readings today capture various elements of this deepening connection with God. We find illustrations of being called, being convinced, and being consecrated. These are just a sampling of the phases we might experience as we become disciples. As you consider them today and this week, how would you describe your own steps in your relationship with Jesus? The call of Abram in the book of Genesis forms the pattern for every invitation God makes to His people. In terms of being Chosen, it all starts in this moment. We see it repeated with patriarchs, judges, prophets, and kings. We too are called, especially in Lent, to leave a former way of life, or a place of comfort, or a habit that keeps us from flourishing. We are called to strike out in a new direction, to a new place where God can fulfill His promises to us. In the Gospel of the Transfiguration, we see the chosen disciples, Peter, James, and John, following the call of Jesus, and accompanying Him to a deeper place. The Father’s glory is revealed on the mountaintop, in much the same way that Moses saw God’s glory on Mount Sinai. In this case, Jesus is identified in a new way, not just as a teacher or miracle worker, but as the Son of God. Peter, James, and John come away from the encounter convinced of Jesus’ divinity. They are in awe of His majesty as they get a glimpse of Who He truly is. The Resurrection will put the exclamation point on this entire experience. In St. Paul’s Letter to Timothy, the Apostle reminds all of us that we are consecrated. This life we live is for God’s greater purpose, “according to His own design and the grace bestowed on us in Christ Jesus before time began.” This promise and purpose gives us the courage to endure hardship, and to participate in the mission Jesus has given us. Let us especially consecrate this time of Lent to be a time of fruitfulness and growth. Let us embrace our disciplines of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving so that we can enter more fully into the Lord’s Easter glory. Together, as individual disciples and as a community of faith, let us be open to God’s call, be convinced of God’s love and mercy, and consecrated to fulfill God’s plan of salvation. Join us for our Lenten Series on Wednesday nights in March, and we’ll grow as one with God and neighbor. I hope to see you there!

Meal Pack: You are called to help feed the hungry (Isaiah 58:7-11; Matthew 25:31-46). Imagine joining other parish members in an

assembly-line operation that will pack, in one day tens of thousands of vitamin-fortified and protein-enriched meals for schools or hospitals in developing countries, or for disaster relief. That's the "Meal Pack" event that St. Gabriel and St. Margaret Mary parishes will co-host at St. Margaret Mary on April 18, 2020, with Rise Against Hunger (http://www.riseagainsthunger.org/). PLEASE consider helping in any or all of these ways:

PRAY for success of our event, and for those who will receive these meals. When you sit down to eat during Lent, remember those in need of food that we can help provide.

CONTRIBUTE to help pay for basic meal ingredients, packaging materials and shipping. The more contributed the more meals we will pack at the event. Each $34 contributed will pay for 100 meals. Please send contributions in any amount payable to St. Gabriel Parish (note “Meal Pack” on your contribution check and send to parish office or drop in collection basket). We will not have a Rice Bowl collection this year, so please consider a Lenten contribution to the Meal Pack event instead. The contribution drive will end on March 15.

SIGN UP as a volunteer to help pack meals at the event (two hour shifts). Parish members and families, including teenagers and children ages 3 and up accompanied by parents are welcome to participate. Procedures to sign up online for the April 18 event will be announced in the bulletin in mid-March.

Scrip Tip – Why should I use Scrip?

People often ask, “Why should I use Scrip gift cards?” To me, the best answer to this question is: “It is the only parish fundraiser that does not cost me anything extra. I do not have to buy anything I don’t really want. I don’t have to pay more than I usually pay. I buy what I normally buy and the parish gets to share in the profit.” So please use Scrip gift cards whenever possible. If you have any questions, please stop by and ask. Scrip is available for purchase after each weekend liturgy and in the parish office during the week. Thank you for your continued support! Buy Scrip today!

Adult Faith Formation - No Greater Love: A Biblical Walk Through Christ’s Passion Join us as we walk through the Passion of Christ,

from the Agony in the Garden to Calvary. Old Testament prophecies & studying the historical context will help us gain a deeper understanding of the Passion. This study has gotten rave reviews from those who have completed it. Join us! Optional workbook $10

Thursdays 9:00 am / 6:30 pm, beginning March 5th Contact Julie Schmitz with questions or to register, 722-4961 All are welcome! No prior Bible study experience necessary!

Youth Ministry

Young adults in today’s world find life difficult and overwhelming. Derrick Diedrich attended his first youth conference and discovered that Jesus was there to help him stay on the right

path. “Everybody was praising and loving Jesus and I just fell in love with the electricity. It’s like the Holy Spirit was running everything and it was just beautiful,” said Derrick. Derrick chose to follow Jesus and share his faith with other young adults. He credits his transformation to those at the Diocese of Green Bay who support parish youth ministry and religious education programs. Through these ministries, our youth encounter Christ and see the beauty of a church that is full of mercy and love. When you support the Bishop’s Appeal, you support young people like Derrick. You also train parish leaders like deacons, pastoral associates and religious educators. To make a gift to the Bishop’s Appeal contact your parish, visit www.catholicfoundationgb.org/give, or call Tammy toll-free at 877-500-3580 ext. 8123.
