25th Sunday of Ordinary Time
Isaiah 55:6–9
Psalm 145:2–3, 8–9, 17–18
Philippians 1:20–24, 27
Ma hew 20:1–16
The house of Israel is the vine of God, who planted and watered it, preparing the Israelites to bear fruits of righteousness (see Isaiah 5:7; 27:2–5).
Israel failed to yield good fruits and the Lord allowed His vineyard, Israel’s kingdom, to be overrun by conquerors (see Psalm 80:9–20). But God promised that one day He would replant His vineyard and its shoots would blossom to the ends of the earth (see Amos 9:15; Hosea 14:5–10).
This is the biblical backdrop to Jesus’ parable of salvation history in today’s Gospel. The landowner is God. The vineyard is the kingdom. The workers hired at dawn are the Israelites, to whom He first offered His covenant. Those hired later in the day are the Gentiles, the non-Israelites, who, until the coming of Christ, were strangers to the covenants of promise (see Ephesians 2:11–13). In the Lord’s great generosity, the same wages, the same blessings promised to the first-called, the Israelites, will be paid to those called last, the rest of the nations.
This provokes grumbling in today’s parable. Doesn’t the complaint of those first laborers sound like that of the older brother in Jesus’ prodigal son parable (see Luke 15:29–30)? God’s ways, however, are far from our ways, as we hear in today’s First Reading. And today’s readings should caution us against the temptation to resent God’s lavish mercy.
Like the Gentiles, many will be allowed to enter the kingdom late—after having spent most of their days idling in sin.
But even these can call upon Him and find Him near, as we sing in today’s Pslam. We should rejoice that God has compassion on all whom He has created. This should console us, too, especially if we have loved ones who remain far from the vineyard.
Our task is to continue laboring in His vineyard. As Paul says in today’s Epistle, let us conduct ourselves worthily, struggling to bring all men and women to the praise of His name.
Yours in Christ,
Dr. Sco Hahn Published with permission by stpaulcenter.com

This week’s Pick of the Week is the 3 hour award winning
movie called “Padre Pio Between Heaven and Earth”. Based on the historical records and the personal tes mony of his
fellow friars, this is the amazing true story of the life of the
famous s gma c monk, St. Padre Pio, a contemporary saint who
died in 1968. Blessed with incredible spiritual gi s, including
healing, bi‐loca on, reading of souls, and the s gma c wounds,
Padre Pio was a powerful witness for Christ, and a great spiritual
guide to countless souls for over fi y years. Filmed on loca on in
Italy, starring Michele Placido in a moving performance, this film
tells the whole story of the beloved monk from San Giovanni
Rotondo, a place where millions of pilgrims now annually visit
Padre Pio's grave. Music by legendary music composer Ennio
Morricone.

We would like to thank Oregon Hill
for placing an ad in our bulle n! Our adver sers pay for

now that we are prin ng the bulle n in house.
Dear Parishioners,
The forest fires are still raging, air quality is taking a long time to get better, and we still need to be checking on our friends and neighbors this week to see how they are doing. Please pray for all those affected by the wildfires. Please pray for one another.
The Archdiocese of Portland has established a Wildfire Relief Fund to help parishes and people impacted by the devastating wildfires in western Oregon. Collected funds will be distributed to parishes in need, especially those directly assisting people who have lost homes, been displaced, and have otherwise been impacted by the fires. Please make checks payable to Archdiocese of Portland and record Wildfire Relief Fund in Memo. All checks should be sent to: The Archdiocese of Portland, Wildfire Relief Fund, P.O. Box 15149 Portland, OR 97293.
When the hazardous air quality improves to normal levels, we will change the HVAC filters in all areas of St. Frederic to keep our air quality high. I want all our parishioners to feel safe enough to come to St. Frederic to receive the Eucharist. You can watch Mass on TV/Youtube with wonderful music and great homilies from famous priests and bishops, but as a spectator, you are not participating in Mass as you are when you are present in our church. I have loved seeing so many more people return every week. Pray with me for the day when all parishioners can come to church again!
Yours in Christ,
Fr. Marandu
