Pew Update
We have signed a contract for the new pews! Including the sales tax, delivery
and installation the total will be $111,058. We are going make a space in the
very middle of the church (leaving out one row) that will allow a walk-through
aisle and allow for smaller configurations for smaller funerals, weddings and
daily masses.
We have had 46 sponsors who have now sponsored the pews in the church
and cry room at $1,000 each. We have had another $11,000 donated from
various gifts to the church. So we have now raised $56,000 of our total.
Please consider giving a gift of $50, 100 or $200 to help with the pew project.
This will serve our church for the next fifty years and be a nice way for us to
celebrate the 50th anniversary of the new church building in December!
Please make checks payable to St. Francis Xavier and mark them as “pew
project.” Thank you.

Looking for a mission and purpose in life? Do you know God
has a plan for you? “For I know well the plans that I have in
mind for you,” declares the LORD, “plans for your welfare and
not for calamity to give you a future and a hope” (Jeremiah
29:11). Conversion is a “spiritual journey,” and that journey is
centered on fostering a deep relationship with Jesus and the
Church. It takes place through distinct stages over a period of
time suitable to bring about a thorough understanding of
Christianity (catechesis), a significant experience of the parish
community, and a commitment to live the Faith as a Catholic
Christian.
Our classes of inquiry began on September 12. Those wishing
to enter the Catholic Church do so at Easter, and classes
continue with the process until June.
Come see what we are all about. No pressure is brought to
bear. Our next class meets in Xavier Hall (St. Anne Room) on
Sept 19 at 7:00 p.m. Contact the church office at 912-265-3249.
The Wily Steward
If you are perplexed right now it means you listened to today's Gospel. Jesus rarely told self-
explanatory parables. They were designed to cause the listener to stop and question. The case of the wily
manager is one such parable. When Jesus finishes this story you must ask yourself, "What is the spiritual
point of this business story?” This is why Jesus tells these stories, to give us pause. Were they too easy we
would skim right over them. Jesus wants us to roll up our sleeves and dig into these stories and derive
spiritual benefit from them. Jesus trusts us with this story!
So what is the spiritual point of this story? This parable shows us that we must take initiative in the
spiritual life. This manager didn't sit around and get depressed or mull over his predicament, he acted. Jesus
tells us we must take the same initiative in the spiritual life. We cannot sit around and expect everything to
come to us. "The worldly take more initiative than the other-worldly when it comes to dealing with their
own kind." This is a rebuke for us!
Perhaps we can listen to today’s Gospel and ask ourselves – am I as committed to the Gospel as people
in my culture are to secular pursuits? Mark Zuckerberg to Social Networking. Steven Jobs to computer.
Political analysts who are on the TV or radio daily for three hour shows? How about commitment in the
world of sports? Are people as committed to their parish as they are to their college football team? If these
people can have such passion how much more should we for the Gospel!
Think of how committed these people are to their fields. These are fields that change rapidly. Politics
changes every year, new Oscars are given each year and a new champion of sports is crowned each season. If
these people are so committed to these glories which rapidly fade how much more committed should we be to
the Christian life, the glories of which last for all eternity!
So a few practical lessons from today’s Gospel: -Keep the eternal perspective – every soul you come in contact with will live forever.
-We will all give an account for how we use that which has been loaned to us. We are stewards. Everything
I have is on loan. I came into the world naked. I will be buried in the clothes someone picks out for me.
What do I do with all the transitory goods in the meantime?
-Do I take initiative in the spiritual life? Who is my favorite political analyst, sports figure, business person.
Are they more committed to their field than I am to mine?
-We cannot serve two masters. We cannot be 90% faithful to God. We need to be sold out for Jesus.
Commitment means being a faithful Catholic. This means learning and living the teachings of the Church.
Being Catholic means knowing the teachings of my faith, which lead me to salvation and living them out with
all my heart. It means studying the Church's moral teachings and living it out.
In our Eucharistic prayer we pray "make us worthy to share eternal life with Mary the virgin
mother of God, with the apostles, and with all the saints who have done your will throughout the ages."
This one line haunts me. I am in the same Church as these saints who have done God's will throughout the
ages. Someday I will go before the judgment seat of God and be surrounded by Jesus who died for me and
before the saints and martyrs who were faithful to the end, who gave up life and limb for their beliefs.
Christ deserves our very best. May we be faithful in being committed to Christ with our entire heart
mind and souls. St. Augustine wrote of the wily steward, “He was insuring himself for a life that was going
to end. Would you not insure yourself for eternal life?”
-Fr. Tim McKeown

DID YOU KNOW? There are very few things a father can give his children that will last forever – the latest iPod, a trust fund and even a college education are good only for this lifetime. But there are some eternal gifts that a dad should be very careful to pass on. They are love, and the greatest expression of love that is found in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. That is, the Catholic faith.
