He was plagued by a doubt as to whether or not the bread and wine really changed into the body and blood of Christ. One morning, as he was celebrating Mass, he had just pronounced the words of consecration ("This is My Body..., This is My Blood..."), when his doubts and errors revisited him, but in a much more profound way. It was then, however, that this priest was privileged to see that the host that he was holding had physically changed into real Flesh. Today, over thirteen centuries after the miraculous occurrence, this same host remains intact, in the Church of St. Francis in Lanciano, Italy, as a sustained miracle! Looking at it with the naked eye, the Host of Flesh, which is still in one piece and has retained the dimensions of the original "Large Host", has a fibrous appearance and a brown color, which becomes light-reddish if one places a light in the back of the Monstrance. The wine turned into blood, which also still exists, is earthy in color. In 1970, there was a rigorous scientific analysis performed with these conclusions: The Blood of the Eucharistic Miracle is real blood and the Flesh is real flesh. The Flesh consists of the muscular tissue of the myocardium (heart wall); The blood type for both species is type AB, which incidentally is the same blood type found on the shroud of Turin; There is no trace whatsoever of any materials or agents used for preservation of flesh or blood. Sometimes I wonder why cool things like that don’t ever happen today. After all, imagine the benefits to our Church if something like this happened this morning. First, the attention this would receive would undoubtedly secure our financial future. Second, and perhaps best of all, the faith of our community would deepen profoundly. For having scientific confirmation of our belief in the real presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, people would flock to the Church; not simply to go to mass, but also to adore Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. Given all these benefits, it does make one wonder why Our Lord doesn’t grace our mass this morning with a similar miracle? Of course, the answer is that He doesn’t need to and that He doesn’t need to for three reasons. The first is perhaps the most obvious. He has done it once already, and once should be enough. If we would like to witness this miracle, all we have to do is travel to Lanciano, Italy, where the same flesh and blood observed by the congregation 1,300 years ago is still present for us to see. The second reason Our Lord doesn’t need to work a miracle this morning is because it wouldn’t be to our spiritual advantage. At first, this may seem like an odd statement. But here is where we need to remember the story of St. Thomas the doubter. Recall that it was only after St. Thomas had put his fingers into Jesus’ hands and his hand in Jesus’ side that St. Thomas expressed his belief in the resurrection by exclaiming, “My Lord, and my God!” And how did Jesus respond? “You have believed because you have seen. Blessed are those who have not seen, and yet believed.” We are those who are blessed, more blessed, in fact, than St. Thomas, because we still believe even though we have not seen. This leads directly to the third reason we don’t need to witness such a profound miracle this morning. God is still working just as profoundly in our world today, but, since He wants us to be more blessed than even St. Thomas, His ways are usually more subtle than miraculous. As a result, they can sometimes be hard to discern because, even if we are aware of God’s work around us, we are often unsure or confused as to what to do about it. This is why it is absolutely essential to spend more quiet time alone with God in prayer, especially in Eucharistic Adoration. For just as the mother immediately recognizes the voice of her child, even when that voice is disguised behind the apparatus of a cell phone, so too can we learn to recognize the voice of God only when we spend some time listening to His voice. Since Jesus Christ is really present in the Eucharist, is there really any excuse not to spend an hour with Him a week? In Christ, 24TH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME · September 13, 2020

Friends, In the city of Lanciano, Italy, around the year 700, there was a priest who, though learned in the ways of the world, was not

strong in his faith.

In 1970, there was a rigorous scientific analysis performed with these conclusions:

The Blood of the Eucharistic Miracle is real blood and the Flesh is real flesh.

This annual celebra%on of Catholic educa%on provides an opportunity to publicly recognize the dedica%on of individuals within the Catholic school system, to thank those who support Catholic schools, and to raise scholarship funds for low-income students to a"end Catholic schools. COVID-19 has changed the format of the event, but what hasn’t changed is the fact that we will have one night dedicated to honoring educators and raising funds for needs-based scholarships. The 43rd Annual Archbishop’s Dinner for Educa%on will take place virtually on Thursday, September 24, 2020. Please join us from the comfort of your own home for this live, interac%ve celebra%on.

Prayer for Grandparents

Lord Jesus, you were born of the Virgin Mary, the daughter of Saints Joachim and Anne. Look with love on grandparents the world over. Protect them—they are the source of enrichment for families, for the Church and for all of society. Support them—as they grow older, may they con%nue to be, for their families, strong pillars of the Gospel of faith, guardians of noble domes%c ideals, living treasuries of sound religious tradi%ons. Make them teachers of wisdom and courage, that they may pass on to future genera%ons the fruits of their mature human and spiritual experience.

Help families and society to value the presence and role of grandparents. May they never be ignored or excluded, but always encounter respect and love. Help them to live serenely and to feel welcomed in all the years of life which you give them. Mary, Mother of all the living, keep grandparents constantly in your care, accompany them on their earthly pilgrimage, and by your prayers, grant that all families may one day be reunited in our heavenly homeland, where you await all humanity for the great embrace of life without end. Amen.
