Dear FriendsAs the year hurtles by already and, as I write, there arestill Christmas decorations to be seen in some places, welook forward to February and with it, another set oftraditions to be celebrated. One such, ignored at mymortal peril in our house, occurs on February 14th,Valentine’s Day. Even as the Christmas decorationscome down, I was intrigued to learn a few things I, and possibly you, maynever have known about Valentine’s Day, until now……….

One story of the origins of Valentines Day comes from the time of theRoman Empire, under the rule of Emperor Claudius the Second (Not theone of ‘I Claudius’ fame), . Rome was involved in many bloody andunpopular military campaigns. Claudius the Cruel, as he was known at thetime, was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his militaryleagues. He believed that Roman men did not want to leave their loversor families. As a result, he cancelled all marriages and engagements inRome.

During this time a Christian priest named Valentine came to defend lovein the empire. Valentine began to secretly marry couples despite theemperor’s orders. When Emperor Claudius was informed of theseceremonies, Valentine was sent to prison where he remained until hisdeath on February 14 in the year 270.

The festival is like Christmas a combination of both pagan ritual and aChristian tradition and is also linked to the pagan festival of Lupercalia, which was celebrated on February 15 by young Romans centuries beforeChrist. The celebration was held in honour of the goddess Februata Juno, and concerned all young people of marriageable age. The names ortokens representing all the young girls in the district were placed in a loveurn and the young lads each drew a token and the couples paired off. Thiswas a kind of mating lottery game. During the Roman occupation ofBritain, the idea was brought to this country and adopted by the ancientBritons. When people were converted to Christianity the pagan andChristian festivals were merged; the festival of Lupercalia was put back aday and celebrated on St. Valentine's day, February 14. The old pagancustoms still continued and in Britain up to the beginning of the presentcentury it was customary for local lads and lasses to draw lots forpartners. In Lincolnshire, on St. Valentine's eve, the names of eligibleyoung people were written on separate slips of paper and divided intotwo groups, male and female. The boys drew a slip from the girls'

pile and vice versa. Thus each person received two sweethearts andthen had to work out for themselves the most satisfactory arrange-ment. After the final selection had been made the boys treated theirmaidens to all sorts of outings and surprises including dances andgifts.

The censorship of strict Victorian fathers and the element of mysteryand surprise experienced by those who in former times played thelottery pairing game has undoubtedly contributed to the reason whyValentine cards are, by tradition, anonymous.

Gifts have always been a traditional aspect of the lovers' holiday. As atradition in Wales, wooden love spoons are carved and given as gifts.Hearts, keys and keyholes are favourite decorations on the spoons, meaning "You unlock my heart."

Today Valentine's cards are sent anonymously by a 'secret admirer',a common practice is to put a personal message in the local ornational newspapers.

Several Valentine's Day superstitions have even made their way intoour modern-day vocabularies. For example, in the Middle Ages, youngmen and women drew names from a bowl to see who their valentineswould be. They would wear these names on their sleeves for oneweek, and "to wear your heart on your sleeve" now means that it iseasy for other people to know how you are feeling.

Other Valentine's Day superstitions revolve around predicting whoyou're going to marry. Some people used to believe that the first birda single woman saw on Valentine's Day would give her an indication ofthe kind of man she'd marry. If a woman saw a robin flying overheadon Valentine's Day, it meant she would marry a sailor. If she saw asparrow, she would marry a poor man and be very happy. And if shewitnessed a goldfinch flying above, she would marry a millionaire. Idread to think what it would mean if you saw a vulture, luckily they'renot common round these parts. These superstitions probably comefrom the belief that birds, particularly lovebirds, began to mate onFebruary 14th.

On a more practical note, medieval literature can be of assistance ifyou’re yet to find a gift for a special someone this Valentine’s day. Forget

about flashy jewellery; here are some love tokens suitable for every budget:

Well, whether you receive a valentine’s card, anonymous or otherwise, this year, or any other gift, which will hopefully not be in the form of anactual human heart, we can take comfort from the fact that there is onegift of love that we can never doubt, never be separated from and willnever come to an end – of course, the best Valentine of all, and you don’tneed me to tell you what it is. Of course, the love of God, unconditional, often unrequited and un-earned, unsought for and often popping throughthe letterbox of our lives, as it is, doesn’t only last for one day, and canbe experienced in many ways. Like many other kinds of love.

But let me leave you with one last thought, that although we have seenthat in many different times, places and cultures, Valentine’s Day tradi-tions, like our perception of love in its purest form, that of God, takesmany different forms and looks very different, perhaps there is one wayin which it might manifest itself here in Lancashire

Roses are bred She's not pickyIn every hue She's not being crassBut for my wife It's just that she'sOnly red will do. A Lancashire lass

We’ve all seen them: mothers engrossed on theirmobile phones and ignoring their children nearby. But now research hasfound that children whose parents are addicted to their phones aresignificantly more likely to have behaviour problems. The problem is called ‘technoference’. It is when the everyday relationshipbetween parent and child is constantly disrupted by a digital or mobiledevice, including during face-to-face conversations, meal-times and play-times.Technoference causes children to display a range of behavioural problems:from sulking, whining, and emotional distress, to hyperactivity and tantrums.Sadly, it often gets the child nowhere. One health expert has said: ‘AroundManchester you can see unbelievable attempts by children to communicatewith the adult they are with, but who remains oblivious to them.’

The Presentation of Christ in the Temple/ CandlemasCandlemas, 2 February, comes exactly 40 days after Christmas. In New Testa-ment times 40 days old was an important age for a baby boy: it was when theymade their first ‘public appearance’. Mary, like all good Jewish mothers, went tothe Temple with Jesus, herfirst male child - to ‘presentHim to the Lord’. Thus, wehave the Festival of thePresentation of Christ inthe Temple. (Luke 2: 22-40) So where does theCandlemas bit come in?Jesus is described in theNew Testament as theLight of the World, and ear-ly Christians developed thetradition of lighting manycandles in celebration ofthis day.

These book cases contain the hymn books and service booklets and aresituated against the partition near the west entrance.

Mature English oak trees, grown in the Lake District, lay sawn andkiln dried in the timber merchant’s shed at Higher Walton. Eachplank was selected with great care so as to obtain the best charac-teristics, grain and economy.

Using the Scouts’ bus and trailer, the timber was transported fromthe timber yard to the Church Hall. There, under the stage, a moredetailed assessment for cutting was made and the pieces markedout. The timber was then delivered to Blackburn College.

Eight Carpentry and Joinery students, as part of their courseworkfor the Advanced Craft City and Guilds of London Institute certificate, enthusiastically set about machining the timber and skilfully makingthe book cases to the design drawn by their tutor Roy Parker. Aparticular feature of the work is that the handles are shaped out ofthe solid ends. The excellent surface finish was achieved arduouslyand skilfully by hand!

Although the best available sliding door gear was purchased, it wasobserved that the pulleys were running eccentrically so, to overcomethis problem, the engineering skills of Brian Jones, a past Churchwardenof St. Francis Church, re-engineered the bearings to work perfectly.

Further expert help was gratefully accepted when several coats ofvarnish were applied by the College Painting and Decorating tutorBrian Luker. Thus achieving a beautiful finish.

In all, a total of twelve peoplewere involved in making thetwo book cases which areunique to St. Francis Church.

The sheer amount of personal data that children and their parents aregiving away about themselves is staggering. Consider this:Children aged 11 – 16 post on social media on average 26 timesBy 13, a child will have about 1,300 pictures and videos of themselvesposted online.

By 18, the average child will have posted onlinenearly 70,000 times.Anne Longfield, the Children’s Commissioner, warns that children’s lives are being ‘datafied’on a huge scale, as their personal informationis collected by a series of smart toys, smartspeakers and even school apps.

‘We need to think about what this means forchildren’s lives now, and how it may impact ontheir future lives as adults. We simply don’tknow what the consequences of all this infor-mation about our children will be.’

NEWS Christians in the Middle East face 'imminent extinction'Christians have been in the Middle East for nearly 2000 years, but

they now face the threat of ‘imminent extinction’, the Archbishop ofCanterbury has warned. In a recent letter to The Sunday Telegraph, Archbishop Justin Welby told of avisit he had made about 15 years ago to the home of an elderly PalestinianChristian man in Galilee. ‘Foolishly, I asked, “How long has your family beenChristian?” The man gave me a look and replied, “Since about the time of St Paul".’Yet, now Christians in the region are facing ‘the worst situation since the Mongolinvasions of the 13th. Century’, Archbishop Justin said. It is vital that theseChristians in the Middle East know ‘they are not forgotten by the world, ortreated as an irrelevant minority, a societal optional extra, or even a threat’.Archbishop Justin called on the Government to take in more refugees.According to the Barnabas Fund, following a freedom of information request, the Home Office has not admitted a single Christian among the 1,112 Syrianrefugees resettled in the UK in the first three months of last year. The four Christians out of 1,358 Syrian refugees recommended by the UN HighCommissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), for resettlement in the UK were rejected.Only Muslim refugees were granted permission to resettle.

The inventor of the QWERTY keyboard – now almost universallyadopted in English-speaking countries – was born 200 years ago, on14th February 1819, in Pennsylvania. Christopher Latham Scholeswas an Episcopalian who could trace his ancestry back to two of theoriginal Mayflower pilgrims, John and Priscilla Alden.Although he did not invent the typewriter from scratch, Scholes wasinstrumental in developing a successful working model. Vital to thiswas his changing the keyboard, which was originally in alphabeticalorder but had a tendency to jam. Scholes rearranged the levers sothat frequently used keys would not interfere with each other.Scholes started out as a printer and then, after moving to Wiscon-sin, became a newspaper publisher. He served two terms as aSenator for Wisconsin, one as a Democrat and one as a Republican. His typewriter was not a commercial success until he joined forceswith the Remington company, selling them half his rights for$12,000. In 1878 he added a shift key so that the writer couldswitch easily between capitals and lower-case letters. He died in1890, probably of tuberculosis.
