Why should I participate in mass if it’s not required? In many dioceses around the country, the obligation to attend Mass in person remains lifted while the pandemic lasts. Still, finding ways to celebrate the Eucharist- in person, if it can be done sagely or online- has spiritual benefits during difficult times. “Do this in memory of me” is the only direct order Jesus gave to His followers. That means God is the one who initiates this encounter with us. And when God asks us to do something, it is smart to do it. Sanctify the day. Participating in the Mass on Sunday still helps to fulfill the Third commandment obligation to keep holy the Sabbath day and sanctify the day. You’re a baptized person needed by your community. “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” (Mt. 10:20) We help worship God just by being there. You get “take out.” The homily gives the Gospel relevance to our lives. Then we have something to act on in the coming week.

Faith Formation resumes Sunday, April 11. We are all looking forward to gather and share the Catholic faith with the children and youth of the parish. Masks are required. Please call Fredia if you have any questions (374-7253). _____________________________________________________ PLEASE PRAY for Randy Armstrong and Lisa Nelson.Cards and letters can be mailed to Lisa at 11148 Vermontville Hwy, Vermontville, Mi 49096_____________________________________________________Grief Support Group will not meet in April and will meet on May 6th (the first Thursday) at 12:45 in the family center library. Lake Odessa, Mi, 48849 Thank you for your continued support of the church_____________________________________________________Finance Meeting: The Finance Meeting for April has been rescheduled for May 10 at 6:30PM. _____________________________________________________

This week, you will receive a letter from Bishop Walkowiak asking you to make your commitment to support the work of our diocesan programs and ministries through the

Catholic Services Appeal. These are ministries which benefit us all but are difficult for anyone parish to provide on its own. Your gift to the CSA enables the Catholic Church to reach out to people in our 11 counties in a variety of ways, including through formation of our seminarians; youth programming; support for the homebound and incarcerated; families who are struggling; the hungry, and the homeless. Through the CSA, we all work together to care for the Church by sharing the gifts God has granted us. Our parish goal for 2021 is $27,388 and 100% participation, which means a pledge card from every parish family. Please join us as we work to continue God’s work of spirituality, charity, and education.

I am confident that your generosity will enable us to exceed our goal, but everyone’s participation is needed. Keep in mind that any amount raised above our goal stays in this parish. Thank you for doing your part for this important annual appeal.

the trailer in the parking lot South of the Family Center. If the trailer isn't open, you can place them in one of the trash cans at the rear of the trailer. We are still collecting through May. Thank You for your support!

Please pray that young men and women hear and respond generously to the Lord's call to the priesthood, diaconate, life, societies of apostolic life or secular institutes._____________________________________________________WORLDWIDE MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER EXPERIENCEEver thought about making a Worldwide Marriage Encounter weekend, but can't seem to find the time? On this Third Sunday of Easter, we again have Jesus appearing to his disciples, working to convince them that he has indeed risen from the dead. “Why are you troubled?” he asked them. “And why do questions arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see, I have.” Jesus spent a lot of time convincing them that he was alive and then that they had a mission to perform. To go out to the entire world and convince them of the good news. He is alive. He is risen. We are to believe. We are to announce this good news to the whole world.

This remains true to this day. We still have a huge task. There are roughly 8 billion people in the world. Only 2.4 billion are Christian. This leaves 5.6 billion that either don’t know about Jesus Christ or they reject him. In addition, there are many Christians who do not deem him important in their daily lives. Many will insist it is our belief but not theirs.

While we hold it is indeed our belief, we insist it is much more. Jesus Christ’s Resurrection is a real event. It is historically verified, testified in the Bible and part of our living Tradition. The resurrection of Jesus, which happened in the early hours of Sunday morning, is a fact which all the evangelists state clearly and unequivocally. Some holy women discover to their surprise that the tomb is open. On entering, they see an angel who says, “He is not here. He has risen as he said.” The guards who were on duty report what happened to the chief priests. Because of the urgency of the matter, they decide to bribe the guards to spread the word that his disciples came during the night and stole the body of Jesus while they were asleep. “Wretched craftiness,” says St. Augustine, “do you give us witnesses who were asleep? It is you who were asleep if this is the only kind of explanation you have to offer!”

His resurrection is one of our basic dogmas. St. Paul insists, “If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain.” But he IS raised. St. Paul adds, “he appeared to Cephas (Peter), then to the rest of the Apostles and then to more than 500 brethren.” The creeds state that Jesus rose from the dead on the third day, by his own power, by a true resurrection of the flesh, reuniting his soul with his body, and that this fact of the resurrection is historically proven. His resurrection was a glorious resurrection, attaining the full development of human life. He is immortal, freed from all the limitations of space and time. Christ’s body now shares in the glory which his soul had from the beginning. Here lies the unique nature of the historical fact of his resurrection. His resurrection, believed by those who heard, was necessary for our resurrection. For Jesus Christ through his death freed us from our sins. He restored to us all that we had lost by sin and opened for us the gates of eternal life.

Eternal life! This is his gift for us if we believe it and live it. No wonder St. Paul calls him “the man from heaven!” Eternal life! What on earth could possibly be more important this?

God bless you!

Father Tom
