FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER—MAY 19, 2019

From the Desk of Rev. Scott Holmer In contrast to the post-Christian culture today, which sees Christianity as old, the apostles saw Christianity as new. In Revelation, St. John, sees a vision of a new heaven

and a new earth and a new Jerusalem. And the one who sat on the throne says, "Behold, I come to make all things new." St. John was able to recognize Christianity as new and thrilling because it was a way out of the old - the old cycles of sin around him. Christianity was a way out of the pursuit of pleasure, greed, power and fame that was consuming the Roman Empire. Today, we are all growing increasingly aware that the pursuit of pleasure, greed, power and fame are consuming our own world today. Perhaps fifty years ago, a sinful and licentious lifestyle felt new and thrilling when the culture was still so predominately Christian. Now, as more have rejected their Christian roots, things just feel chaotic, anxious and stressful. Hollywood, like the circuses and orgies in Ancient Rome, offers us hedonism, greed, power, and fame to make us feel better. However, more are beginning to wonder if religion of Hollywood is really worth worshipping. Many are beginning to wonder if there is a way out of the chaos, anxiety and stress. The good news is that that there is a way out. However, the Herods and Pilates of our day will not like it because it is easier to control a people when they are afraid. As in St. John's day, the true revolutionaries, the ones whose voices the empire most fears, are the Christians who with Jesus seek to make all things new. God Bless, Fr. Scott

MINISTRIES OF THE MONTH COMMUNITY BULDING

AND USHERS COMMUNITY BUILDING: Did you know that the St. Edwards community building committee hosts two parish wide events each year? Well yes we do! One is our historically fantastic Fun Day which will be held this year on October 6. The other is our first time Pentecost Picnic which will be June 9. About our events: Pentecost Picnic will be a get together in our backyard for fun and fellowship. Meet your fellow parishioners after 11:30 mass to celebrate the birthday of the church. Pack your lunch, a chair, a blanket, and whatever else are your picnic must haves. If you would like, we would love to sample dishes from the varied cultures that make up St Ed’s. We will have a sharing table set up so feel free to show off your cooking or baking skills and bring something from your particular background to share with others. We will have simple games for the kids and adults so please come join the fun!! Fun Day is our longtime favorite. We get together in the fall for rides, games, food, raffles and FUN with your parish family. The tickets will go on sale in September. Mark your calendar! Hope to see everyone at both these events, The party people. Your Community Building committee USHERS: The ushers of St. Edward’s play an integral role in our parish

spirit. They provide us with the comfort of a friendly greeting

when we enter the church for Mass.

Their responsibilities start before many of us arrive. Some of the more obvious tasks include: helping people find seating, arrange for the presentation of the gifts, collection and security of the offerings, ensure an orderly flow at communion time

and oversee the general appearance of the church. When we finally leave the church, the Ushers are there to hand out the bulletins with the same warmth that greeted you before. Usually they serve at the same weekend Mass regularly. They arrive 20 minutes early, stay afterwards to straighten up and

are available to guide and answer questions that parishioners or guests might have. All that is needed is a love of order, an ability to graciously welcome people, an eye for anything out of place. We encourage all responsible teens, as well as adults, to join us. An initial training is provided.

For more information or to volunteer, please call the parish office at 301-249-9199 or send an email to: [email protected]
