THE LESSONSAll may be seated.

Jeremiah 28:5-9

The prophet Jeremiah spoke to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and all thepeople who were standing in the house of the Lord; and the prophet Jeremiah said, “Amen! Maythe Lord do so; may the Lord fulfill the words that you have prophesied, and bring back to thisplace from Babylon the vessels of the house of the Lord, and all the exiles. But listen now to thisword that I speak in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people. The prophets who precededyou and me from ancient times prophesied war, famine, and pestilence against many countries andgreat kingdoms. As for the prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comestrue, then it will be known that the Lord has truly sent the prophet.”

Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church.People: Thanks be to God.Silence for reflection

Canticle G The Song of Ezekiel Ezekiel 36:24-28 EOW34

Officiant: Let us offer the Canticle responsively.All: I will take you from among all nations;

and gather you from all lands to bring you home.I will sprinkle clean water upon you;

and purify you from false gods and uncleanness.A new heart I will give you

and a new spirit put within you.I will take the stone heart from your chest

and give you a heart of flesh.I will help you walk in my laws

and cherish my commandments and do them.You shall be my people,

and I will be your God.

Romans 6:12-23

Do not let sin exercise dominion in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. Nolonger present your members to sin as instruments of wickedness, but present yourselves to God asthose who have been brought from death to life, and present your members to God as instrumentsof righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but undergrace.

What then? Should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Doyou not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the onewhom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?But thanks be to God that you, having once been slaves of sin, have become obedient from theheart to the form of teaching to which you were entrusted, and that you, having been set free fromsin, have become slaves of righteousness. I am speaking in human terms because of your naturallimitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to greater andgreater iniquity, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness for sanctification.

When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. So what advantage didyou then get from the things of which you now are ashamed? The end of those things is death. Butnow that you have been freed from sin and enslaved to God, the advantage you get issanctification. The end is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God iseternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Officiant: Let us offer the Canticle together.All: Surely, it is God who saves me;

I will trust in him and not be afraid.For the Lord is my stronghold and my sure defense,

and he will be my Savior.Therefore you shall draw water with rejoicing

from the springs of salvation.And on that day you shall say,

Give thanks to the Lord and call upon his Name;Make his deeds known among the peoples;

see that they remember that his Name is exalted.Sing the praises of the Lord, for he has done great things,

and this is known in all the world.Cry aloud, inhabitants of Zion, ring out your joy,

for the great one in the midst of you is the Holy One of Israel.Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:

The Apostles’ Creed (Standing, read in unison) BCP 96

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

The First Reading

The hands of a pastor will baptize babies, type out sermons, and draw crosses of ash overpenitent brows. They will break bread, and pour wine, and shelter unwieldy Advent flames. Theywill grasp the speckled arms of the elderly, the sticky fingers of toddlers, the trembling hands ofthe sick, the lifeless palms of the dead. And they will rest upon the heads of others so called.

"Do not neglect your gift," the New Testament instructs, "which was given you throughprophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you" (1 Timothy 4:14).

Ultimately, all are commissioned. All are called. All belong to the holy order of God’s beloved.The hands that pass the peace can pass a meal to the man on the street. The hands that cup togetherto receive Christ in the bread will extend to receive Christ in the immigrant, the refugee, the lonely,or the sick. Hands plant, and uproot, and cook, and caress. They repair, and rewire, and changediapers, and dress wounds. Hands tickle giggling children and wipe away tears. Hands rub heavingbellies of big, ugly dogs. Hands sanctify all sorts of things and make them holy.

Through touch, God gave us the power to injure or to heal, to wage war or to wash feet. Let usnot forget the gravity of that. Let us not forget the call. ~Rachel Held Evans, Searching for Sunday

Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church.People: Thanks be to God.

Canticle N: A Song of God’s Love 1 John 4:7-11 EOW

Lay Leader: We will pray the canticle in unison.All: Beloved, let us love one another, *

for love is of God. Whoever does not love does not know God, *

for God is Love.In this the love of God was revealed among us, *

that God sent his only Son into the world,so that we might live through Jesus Christ.

In this is love, not that we loved God but that God loved us *and sent his Son that sins might be forgiven.

Beloved, since God loved us so much, *we ought also to love one another.

For if we love one another, God abides in us, *and God’s love will be perfected in us.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

Commitment (from the vows of a hermit)

As I dwell in the Nothingness, I pray to belong to you, dear God. I pray for the silent, the empty,the hidden, that when all else is gone, you will be there and I will belong to you completely. I donot know where this prayer will lead me, but I want to go wherever you desire to take me. Help meto dwell within your Presence and your sacred heart forever. I love you, my Beloved One. Amen
