Objective:

The people of St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church seek a vicar that, building on our historic legacy, will help us grow in relationship with God, with each other, and with all members of the diverse community called to gather at the corner of Turk and Lyon Streets.

Background:

St. Cyprian’s is a mission of the Episcopal Diocese of California. It is located in San Francisco’s Western Addition/North of Panhandle neighborhood, a vibrant, racially and economically diverse part of the city that has seen significant demographic change in recent decades. The church was founded in 1923 by Anglicans of the African Diaspora that had been meeting in the crypt of Grace Cathedral. St. Cyprian’s current membership reflects both the congregation’s Afro Anglican heritage (African American and Afro Caribbean) and the changing demographics of the neighborhood, which is home to a growing number of families with young children. St. Cyprian’s congregation is, and seeks to be, diverse: black and white, young and old, rich and poor, gay and straight.

Many organization and programs find their home at Turk and Lyon. Most importantly, St. Cyprian’s is called to a common mission with First United Lutheran Church, who also worships and maintains offices at St. Cyprian’s. St. Cyprian’s and First United collaboratively sponsor the Cyprian’s ARC (arts, resilience, community) program, which seeks to reach out to our surrounding community through concerts, dinners, events and other programs, to invite them into our facilities and into relationship with our congregations, in hope that they come to see and feel Christ’s love through these new relationships. St. Cyprian’s has active relationships with many community organizations, including Episcopal Senior Communities. In addition, Turk and Lyon is home to the Village Project (after school enrichment program), the Simply Sandwiches ministry, and a broad range of other community events and services.

Turk & Lyon 2020 Plan

St. Cyprian’s developed its “Turk & Lyon 2020 Plan” as a vision for growth and sustainability. We hope to build a common vision among congregants and other stakeholders that builds on the Church’s history, invites new relationships and cooperative efforts with other Christian and secular groups, and

seeks to bridge the divides between church and community. Reaching this long-term goal requires meeting several short-term objectives, none of which will be accomplished without significant effort. Yet, we welcome this work, and seek God’s guidance in setting a path that allows our rich legacy to thrive and importantly, helps us live up to our creed to be “a place where everyone matters”.

An important short term goal is to build a collaborative partnership with First United Lutheran Church, which makes its home in St. Cyprian’s facilities. Our joining together has sparked interest throughout the communities of both the Anglican and Lutheran denominations. With the help of denominational leadership, we are confident this model will resonate throughout our Christian traditions. We hope the clarion “Call-to-Common-Mission” will help our two groups formulate sustainable relationships that lead to growth both within our individual congregations and as the Christian cornerstone of the broader community called to gather at Turk and Lyon.

As we gather together and seek to reach out to others, it is critical to identify our constituent moving parts: an Episcopal Church with a rich legacy, struggling to stay alive and keep relevant in an ever-changing socio-economic climate; a maverick Lutheran Church who has stood the test of time and can foresee the benefits of joining resources and ideas in this time and place; and perhaps most important, a neighborhood and surrounding community full of young, receptive, enthusiastic people, including many families with small children, eager for social engagement and spiritual growth. Building stronger relationships among these groups, and therefore building one larger community, is the recipe for the growth and sustainability we seek. With effort, and God’s guidance, we believe we will succeed.

In the context of this collaboration, other short-term objectives are also important:

• Refreshing the infrastructure that will help facilitate our growth: implementing appropriate policies and procedures and plans as well as setting up committees and networks that can assist in identifying needs of our present and future congregants and community affiliations. Specifically, we are strengthening the directives of our Bishop’s and Steering committees who play important roles in vetting the needs of the Church and community at large.

• Playing a more active role in the ARC Center (Art, Resilience and Community) efforts alongside First United. St. Cyprian’s will continue to work side-by-side with the ARC Leadership to incorporate programs and facility uses that will promote the objectives of our Call to Common Mission.

• Maintaining and where possible improving existing church programs and liturgical practices to make our church more attractive and inviting to the general public. This includes the Spirit Village service for Children and Families.

In the long term, our initiatives are along the lines of our short term endeavors: to foster and strengthen the Call to Common Mission; expand the footprint of outreach to the community by answering the needs of its people; build on the Spirit Village model by offering more programs for children and families; assist in further development of the Village Project; solicit more community programs like Simply Sandwiches, SF Live Arts, the Art programs, Shakespeare Camp, USF Environmental Studies, etc. In essence, our goal is to lay down a solid foundation of principles and practices that will allow all who use and enjoy Turk and Lyon to thrive well past 2020.

This is our plan and we’re holding to it.
