IV Sunday of Easter Good Shephard Sunday

May 3, 2020 While in Ireland on a sabbatical a few years ago, I was able to stay with friends who have a house in Donegal. As a way to be present to the local PP (Parish Priest) to whom my friends introduced me, I offered to celebrate Mass for him on the weekend. In addition to the main Church in Buncrana, he had an Oratory and a Chapel to serve. Mass was celebrated in each location on Sunday. He welcomed my help. As with all parishes and small villages, I soon became an object of discussion as they talked about and wondered who this “Yank from the States” was. The rumor mill must have been working overtime because it soon got around that I was either the new pastor or a professor from a university. It was a rural section of Ireland amid the undulating hills of County Donegal by Lough Swilly. The main industry was farming and raising sheep. With great irony for a kid from South Philly, on this Sunday, traditionally called Good Shepherd Sunday, I found myself celebrating Mass on Good Shepherd Sunday for actual shepherds. I was told this story about one of the locals.

The old man was dying. He had farmed the land and raised sheep for all of his 80 long years. Now the end was near. His bed was moved on to the first floor near the fireplace and his family thought that they cared for him as best they could. They tried to keep him still and not disturb him. His condition weakened him and mobility became a great challenge. In the spring of the year, he made a request that he wanted to see the new lambs. Having raised sheep his entire life, he knew it was close to or in the midst of lambing season. Trying to protect him, his family thought not to move him so much, so his son told him. “Not yet, Daddy. No lambs born yet.” The old man did not accept that. It was well after Easter and it should be lambing season. “No, Daddy,” the son said again, “No new lambs yet.” The old shepherd continually insisted and finally the family gave way. A comfortable chair was set out in the front of the house - one of those thatched roof cottages that is the quin-tessence of rural Ireland. Slowly the old man made his way out to the front of the house and he sat in the chair they moved out there for him. His son came over and placed a lamb in his lap: “Here you go, Daddy, a new lamb. Just after being born yesterday.”

The animal fussed and fidgeted for a bit but when the old man offered milk through a bottle the lamb settled down. The old man petted and fed the lamb which eventually drifted off to sleep in his lap and before too long, the old man was asleep as well.

As the sun started to set and the temperature began to drop the oldest son went to wake the old man and suggested that they come inside. As he stood to go in the house, the old man paused and turned to his son and said: “Oh, and by the way. I wasn’t born yesterday, and neither was that lamb.” And in he went.

The family members thought they were trying to protect the old man and keep him still when he knew all along what he wanted. In their misguided efforts to provide the kind of care they thought he needed they did not really care for him all that well. That is not the kind of service the Good Shepherd offers to us and in imitation of the Good Shepherd that is the kind of service we are to give others. When we force our will on another, no matter how good our intentions may be, what in actual fact we are doing is not serving others. We are directing the other according to the dictates of our needs or our desires.

The Good Shepherd leads. The Good Shepherd opens the gate and grants freedom. Jesus goes even fur-ther and makes the audacious claim that He is the Gate. In another passage He says to Thomas… “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Some manuscripts present that passage as: I am the way to truth and the life. The gospel is the only hope for any of us either personally or globally. In imitation of the gospel passage proclaimed on this Good Shepherd Sunday, listen for His voice. Allow Him to lead you in service to one another, not fulfilling your own will but that of those around you whom you love and serve. Faithfully, Msgr. Diamond

The Response is: Mary, pray for us. Mary, Mother of all Life, help us to respect human life from the moment of conception to the moment of natural death. R. Mary, Mother of Compassion, You showed us how valuable a single life can be; Help us to guard and protect the lives of all people entrusted to our care. R. Mary, Mother of the Child Jesus, with St. Joseph you formed the Holy Family. Guard and protect all families in this earthly life; R. Mary, Mother Most Holy, You sanctified the vocation of motherhood; Pour out your heavenly aid on all mothers and help them to be holy. R. Mary, Mother of Sorrows, Simeon's prophecy foretold that a sword of suffering would pierce your heart; Bring comfort and hope to all mothers who suffer over their children. R. Mary, Full of Grace, You had a choice in responding to God's call; Help us always to say "Yes" to the will of God in our lives, And strive always to do whatever he tells us. R.

Mary Comforter of the Afflicted, Pour forth your heavenly grace on all who are in need of God's healing, Especially those involved in abortion; Help them to experience the love and mercy of Christ, your Son. R. Mary Intercessor and Advocate, We lift up the poor, the displaced, the marginalized and vulnerable members of society; Help them to never abandon hope, but to place their trust in the God who gave them life. R. Mary Mother of the Word Incarnate, you bore in your womb him whom the heavens cannot contain; Help us to bear witness to Christ by the example of our lives And show the world the extravagant love of God. R. All: Remember, o most gracious Virgin Mary that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, we fly unto you, 0 Virgin of virgins, our Mother. To you we come, before you we stand, sinful and sorrowful. 0 Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not our petitions, but in your mercy hear and answer them. Amen.

The Ministry of Consolation A St. Cornelius community response to the needs of people grieving the death of a significant person/persons in their lives. The ministry honors the words and exam-

ple of the Lord Jesus: "Blessed are they who mourn;

they shall be consoled" (Matthew 5:4).

A team of three trained St. Cornelius church members are the facilitators for the consolation ministry. At this time, due to the coronavirus we are all strug-gling with, we need to put our ministry on hold until a later date can be arranged. When that date can be de-termined, we will inform our current participants. Watch this space for updates.

Helping Hands and Hearts

The St . Cornel iu s Li terary Socie ty

The SCLS is well under way for 2020. Our gatherings have looked at the works of Graham Green’s The Power and the Glory and selected short stories by Flannery O’Connor and two works by C. S. Lewis Mere Christianity and The Screwtape Letters. For our next symposium on writers we will look at a writer who has had im-mense influence on Catholic so-cial causes. Founder of the Cath-olic Worker Movement, and con-vert to Catholicism Dorothy Day became a voice for the poor and homeless through her non-violent activism. Her autobiography, The Long Loneliness, I think you will find both fascinating and inspiring as she recounts her journey from Greenwich Village, NY to her conversion to Catholicism. Normally we meet on the second Sunday of the month, however, following the directives of state and local offi-cials, the CDC, Archbishop Pérez and good common sense we must postpone our usual gatherings until further notice. I would encourage you to take this time and enjoy our se-lected reading for when we next gather.

TABERNACLE CANDLES In memory of Mary & Bill Morrison, Req. by Bette Morrison

LEAD THE WAY Urge Congress to Support

those Most Vulnerable in Addressing COVID-19

It is truly a pivotal moment. The world around us has changed and we are experiencing immense uncertainty and loss. At this moment, we must come together as one human family. The Holy Father calls to us, "let us remain united. Let us make our closeness felt to those who are alone and to those who are most stricken." This crisis demonstrates how interconnected we are and how critically important it is to assist those most vulnera-ble both in the U.S. and around the world. You can help lead the way. • You can help support refugees and others on the move

living in crowded settlements with little access to clean water and soap.

• You can help ensure children who rely on that one school lunch can continue to be fed.

How? We invite you to lift your voice to Congress and stand with our human family around the world. Why now? Congress is negotiating its next emergency bill to address COVID-19 right now. We must ensure Con-gress provides funding for international programs that re-duce poverty, keep communities safe and help families survive and thrive. You can help make a difference to prevent the spread of this virus. Your action helps care for vulnerable populations around the world in need of lifesaving as-sistance. For sample letter go to

https://support.crs.org/act/lead-the-way-covid Your letter can make the difference to those

most vulnerable.
