The Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph December 27, 2020

Today we meet Simeon and Anna who, in a graced moment and in fulfillment of their lifelong desire, meet the Messiah. There is an ancient sort of wisdom the Church possesses, and it is plainly evident in so many aspects of the life of the Church. This is particularly true in the Liturgical Calendar. So soon after the celebration of Christmas when the mystery of the Incarnation is revealed and begins to unfold, it does so in the context of the family - The Holy Family. The Christmas season is the time when celebrations take place within families. Families are a great blessing, but they can be challenging as well. After all, every day is not Christ-mas morning. Though even Christmas morning can be kind of rough within families. Despite that, God’s Love can clearly be seen, lived and experienced within families. Your own family, your gatherings and your celebra-tions are graced moments. St. Paul’s words to the Colossians provide the perfect frame for family structure and interactions.

Put on, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience,

bearing with one another and forgiving one another… And over all these put on love…

And be thankful. Imagine your dinner table decorated with those virtues and dispositions. Living those words allows no room for rancor, discord or conflict. The importance of family cannot be overstated. There was a time in a previous life when I was immersed in education on all kinds of levels. I fully immersed myself in educational research and the study of some of the most central and esoteric aspects of education. Back in the 1960’s, May 1964 to be more specific, then President Johnson announced his plans for the Great Society at a speech delivered at the University of Michigan. In his vision he wanted social reform. He focused on education and engaged the services of an academic at the University of Chicago, James Coleman. Coleman tracked the influences on education and what helped establish a record of achievement for students. Much to the chagrin of some bureaucrats and a load of so-called intelligentsia, Coleman found that among the most significant predictors for academic achievement was an intact family unit of children with a mom and a dad. Civic and educational leadership clamored to shovel more money into the educational process as the per-fect means to assure success. The traditional teaching of our Church has always supported the family unit as the best means to establish and maintain a society while providing for the Common Good. In the mid twentieth century, Coleman uncovered a statistical truth while we have preached the importance of family as an objec-tive truth for centuries. This Sunday afternoon at our next gathering for our CST 101 (Catholic Social Teaching) the session will be focused on the family. The title of this session is Call to Family, Community and Participation. Through various Church Teachings, Doctrinal Statements, Papal writings and aspects of the Catechism of the Catholic Church we will explore what it means and how important the family is in the life of the Church. We meet virtually and the session generally lasts about an hour. I am hoping for more participation from those who attend. I am always much more interested in hearing what you have to say than I am in you listening to what I have to say. On this Sunday when we celebrate the Holy Family of Jesus Mary and Joseph, celebrate your family and pray on their behalf. Your family, like my own, is far from perfect. But God has given them to us in love. And in love I recommend that you ask Jesus to bless them, protect them and keep them close to Himself. Pray that the Holy Family of Nazareth will bless your families with holiness, security and the love of God which each can share and live in those unique and graced moments with your family. Faithfully, Msgr. Diamond

  • The Holy Family: Jesus, Mary and Joseph The devotion to the Holy Family was born in Bethlehem, together with the Baby Jesus. The shepherds went to adore the Child and, at the same time, they gave honor to His family. Later, in a similar way, the three wise men came from the East to adore and give honor to the newborn King with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh that would be safeguarded by His family. We can go further to affirm that in a certain sense Christ, Himself, was the first devotee of His family. He showed His devotion to His mother and foster father by submitting Himself, with infinite humility, to the duty of filial obedi-ence towards them. This is what St Bernard of Clairvaux said in this regard, ‘God, to whom angels submit themselves and who principalities and powers obey, was subject to Mary; and not only to Mary but Joseph also for Mary’s sake [….]. God obeyed a human creature; this is humility without precedent. A human creature commands God; it is sublime beyond measure.’ (First Homily on the ‘Missus Est’). Today’s celebration demonstrates Christ’s humility and obedience with respect to the fourth commandment, whilst also highlighting the loving care that His parents exercised in His keeping. The servant of God, Pope John Paul II, in 1989, entitled his Apostolic Exhortation, ‘Redemptoris Custos’ (Guardian of the Redeemer) which was dedicated to the person and the mission of Saint Joseph in the life of Christ and of the Church. After exactly a century, he re-sumed the teaching of Pope Leo XIII, for who Saint Joseph ‘.. shines among all mankind by the most august dignity, since by divine will, he was the guardian of the Son of God and reputed as His father among men’ (Encyclical Quamquam Pluries [1889] n. 3). Pope Leo XIII continued, ‘.. Joseph became the guardian, the administrator, and the legal defender of the divine house whose chief he was.[…] It is, then, natural and worthy that as the Blessed Joseph ministered to all the needs of the family at Nazareth and girt it about with his protection, he should now cover with the cloak of his heavenly patronage and defend the Church of Jesus Christ.’ Not many years before, blessed Pope Pius IX had proclaimed Saint Joseph, ‘Patron of the Catholic Church’ (1870) Almost intuitively, one can recognize that the mysterious, exemplary, guardianship enacted by Joseph was conducted firstly, in a yet more intimate way, by Mary. Consequently, the liturgical feast of the Holy Family speaks to us of the fond and loving care that we must render to the Body of Christ. We can understand this in a mystical sense, as guardians of the Church, and also in the Eucharistic sense. Mary and Joseph took great care of Jesus’ physical body. Following their example, we can and must take great care of His Mystical Body, the Church, and the Eucharist which He has entrusted to us. If Mary was, in some way, ‘the first tabernacle in history’ (John Paul II Ecclesia de Eucharis-tia, n. 55) then we the Tabernacle in which Our Lord chose

to reside in person, in His Real Presence, was also entrust-ed to us. We can learn from Mary and Joseph! What would they ever have overlooked in the care of Jesus’ physical body? Is there something, therefore, that we can withhold for the right and adoring care of His Eucharistic Body? No amount of attention, no sane act of love and adoring respect will ever be too much! On the contrary, our adoration and respect will always be inferior to the great gift that comes to us in the Holy Eucharist. Looking at the Holy Family, we see the love, the protec-tion, and the diligent care that they gave to the Redeemer. We can not fail to feel uneasiness, perhaps a shameful thought, for the times in which we have not rendered the appropriate care and attention to the Blessed Eucharist. We can only ask for forgiveness and do penance for all the sac-rilegious acts and the lack of respect that are committed in front of the Blessed Eucharist. We can only ask the Lord, through the intersession of the Holy Family of Nazareth, for a greater love for their Son Incarnate, who has decided to remain here on earth with us every day until the end of time. Things to Do: • Let us imitate the Holy Family in our Christian families,

and our family will be a cell and a prefiguration of the heavenly family. Say a prayer dedicating your family to the Holy Family. Pray for all families and for our coun-try to uphold the sanctity of the marriage bond which is under attack.

In an on-going effort to keep our pews clean and COVID clean and to keep our fellow parishioners safe and healthy, we need to continually clean and properly sanitize our pews after each Mass. Since early June, many volunteers have dedicated their time and willingness to take this responsibility after each Mass, funeral and other various liturgical cele-brations. We are grateful for their dedication to this effort. New dates have been added to the sign-up Genius, primarily Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Masses. So I encourage you and your family to pick a Sunday or a Mass during Christmas and consider spending an additional 15 minutes to assist our parish in keeping our church clean and COVID free. The votes are in and the next book the St. Cornelius Literary Society will explore is Truman Capote’s A Christmas Memory. It was a run away hit and gar-nered a massive amount of votes. No need for a recount here. Seven-year-old Buddy inaugu-rates the Christmas season by crying out to his cousin, Miss Sook Falk: "It's fruitcake weath-er!" Thus begins an unforgetta-ble portrait of an odd but enduring friendship between two innocent souls--one young and one old--and the memories they share of beloved holiday rituals.

CRS NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT Did you know that an adult desert locust can eat two grams of vegetation per day? In fact, a swarm covering just one square kilometer can include up to 80 million mature locusts with the capacity to consume the same amount of food as 35,000 people in a single day. Farmers in poor areas of the world are losing the crops that support them. Visit www.crs.org to find out how you can help! "I was left speechless when I saw what the locusts had done to my sorghum field. They reduced it to nothing. Now I have the confidence to plant again because I have seen that CRS and its partners are doing something about the locusts and I have confi-dence that even if they attack again, we have enough in place to deter them."

    Family Promise Homeless Ministry

Family Promise, a non-profit, which serves the homeless in southern Chester County.

St. Cornelius volunteers support Family Promise, a non-profit, which serves the homeless in southern Chester County. Since March, Family Promise has provided financial assistance families in our community. And even though they are no longer able to do the “rotational” program through the churches, they have continued to take families in, and work hard to keep the guests safe. As families graduate from the program, they become a part of the growing alumni network. They continue to need support and encouragement, and the case manager is there for them. The National office has put together an online training. If volunteers would like a refresher, or for new people who would like to learn more, they can simply go to: https://familypromise.org/volunteer-training-videos. For questions or to make additional donations or be-come a volunteer, please contact Kathy Silvon at

    [email protected] or call 484-720-8214.

HOLY FAMILY PROJECT You have seen many recent improvements to our campus and Church, but we are not finished! Plans are now underway to improve the area to the rear of the Narthex. This is a beautiful space, which opens onto our backyard and the statue of “Our Lady of Chadds Ford” - but we rarely use it. The current patio area, which was donated by a parish family some time ago, will be modified and expanded to give more usable space. The exist-ing stones will be reused, but placed closer together to give a smoother surface, and we hope to have many gath-erings – such as post-Mass coffees – in this space. To make this de-sign work even better, a new walkway to the park-ing lot will be added. Our current design calls for a five-foot wide walk-way of pavers of varying sizes. We plan to have the pavers laser-engraved and will be offering them to parishioners who may wish to have them en-graved in memory of loved ones. Since the larger pavers (12” x 12”) are limited in number (only 75 available at $400.), these will probably go fast. But you can also purchase smaller pavers (4” x 8” at $150). We do expect the larger pavers to go quickly. At this point we anticipate selling pavers between now and probably into early 2021, and installing the walkway sometime in late spring or early summer. If you are interested in purchasing a paver, please see our web-site to fill out the order form.

CHURCH CALENDARS Our parish calendars have arrived and are available for your home or office. These are provided by Pagano Funeral Home for free. While they do not have vaccination dates or the expected “end date” for the pandemic, they do have more important Church dates to remember; Lent, Holy Week, Feasts Days and Holy Days. Please Be sure to pick up your family calendar after Mass this weekend.

Thank you to all of our very generous parishion-ers for the total of $19,025.00 in gift cards for our Giving Tree Charities. They are going to people out of work because of COVID, young mothers with little children and babies, and struggling families right here in our own parish! Your sacrifices are bringing great blessings to so many!

the challenges of modern society. Modern Catholic social teaching has been articulated through a tradition of papal,

conciliar, and episcopal documents. The depth and richness of this tradition can be understood best through a

direct reading of these documents. Join us once again on Sunday, December 27, at 3:00 PM for our second of seven installments of Catholic Social Teaching by logging into our ZOOM meeting and join in the conversation. More information can be found on our website at

    https://www.saintcornelius.org/catholic-relief-services

CALL TO FAMILY, COMMUNITY, AND PARTICIPATION The person is not only sacred but also social. How we organize our society - in economics and politics, in law and policy - directly affects human dignity and the capacity of individuals to grow in community. Marriage and family are the central social institu-tions that must be supported and strengthened, not undermined. We believe people have a right and a duty to participate in society, seeking to-gether the common good and well-being of all, especially the poor and vulnerable.
