Plunge into the river Jordan and what do you feel?
The cool refreshing water of the Father’s love, the purifying water of Jesus’
redempon and the thirst quenching water of the Holy Spirit.
It is the first step on our path as we follow the perfect example of Savior.
Dive in, and rise again ready to carry His gospel to the world.

ST. CHARLES BORROMEO CATHOLIC CHURCH - FORT WAYNE, INDIANA
JANUARY 15
Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Jesus, the Son of God
† Reading I Isaiah 49.3,5-6
(The servant of the Lord)
† Reading II 1 Corinthians 1.1-3
(Greeting of the church)
† Gospel Matthew 1.29-34
(John’s testimony to Jesus)
KEY PASSAGE: (John said), “I did not know him, but the reason why I came baptizing with water was that he might be made known to Israel.”
Adult: When have you been surprised to see goodness that you had overlooked in someone?
Child: Who has surprised you by doing something kind for you when you did not expect it?
A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR. . . . .
We have begun our new schedule of confessions from 7:30 a.m.-8:00 a.m. each morning, Monday through Saturday. In the first week, we did a little head count: 24 people took advantage of this opportunity. Beautiful.
I recently attended the funeral of Ed Dahm (brother of our parishioner, Joe Dahm.) Ed was the driving force most responsible for the opening of the Perpetual Adoration Chapel at St. Jude and for keeping it filled with adorers for the past 30 years. To offer adoration with the Blessed Sacrament exposed, a parish needs to have two people committed to be present at all times. For perpetual adoration, two committed adorers are needed for each of the 168 hours in the week. That is a lot of committed people! That is also more people than a single parish can provide. Anyone willing to sign up for an hour each week is invited to call Mike at 245-6396. As I heard Ed say a hundred times, “It will be the best hour of your week.”
In light of our 60th anniversary, we continue the story of our parish, as told in Fr. Hession’s journal. On June 7, 1957, St. Charles officially became a parish, with Fr. Hession as the new pastor. Since there was no rectory, Fr. Hession moved into the rectory at St. Jude on that date. He was pastor of a parish with no buildings, no staff, no organizations, and no money. However, he was responsible for all of the Catholics living in the new parish boundaries. Fr. Hession immediately began to make contacts with his new flock. In order to provide sacraments, he borrowed churches.
Philip Joseph Reynolds was the first St. Charles baby to be baptized. The baptism was held on June 23 in St. Jude’s church. James Yarnelle and Judith Kramer were the first St. Charles couple to be married. The wedding took place in St. Vincent’s church. The first St. Charles funeral Mass was offered for Richard Guthier. That Mass took place in St. John’s church in New Haven.
Fr. Hession set to work, determined to open a school in just over a year’s time. He contacted architects Humbrecht Associates to begin plans for a school building. Then he began a concentrated search to find sisters who would teach in the school. He toured a great deal of Indiana and part of Illinois, and he wrote to religious communities in eight states, trying to find teaching sisters who might be available. Community after community told him that they had no spare teachers. Finally, after two visits and several letters, the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart in Joliet agreed to send two sisters for the beginning of the school year 1958. Fr. Hession wrote in large letters in his journal: “Deo Gratias!”

ST. CHARLES VOCATION COMMITTEE
From our birth God calls us to be whole, holy people. How are you growing in wholeness and holiness? For some, the path to wholeness and holiness is through service as a Sister, Brother, or Priest. Think about it! (Corinthians 1.1-3)
ST. CHARLES KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
THURSDAY, JANUARY 19
On behalf of our Pastor, Father Tom Shoemaker, and our entire faculty and staff of St. Charles Borromeo School, I wish to invite you to our kindergarten registration day on Thursday, January 19, from 1:15 p.m.-2:30 p.m. in Rooms C & D of the Hession Center.
Next school year, 2017-2018, children who will be five years old by August 1, are eligible for our kindergarten program.
Please note, our January 19, registration for kindergarten is early enough to ensure that parish families of St. Charles Borromeo have a first opportunity to register their children for kindergarten. During the first weeks of February, we will be opening enrollment for students who may qualify for the School Choice Scholarship, or voucher. Please register for kindergarten in a timely manner, as we will not be holding spots.
In striving to provide the best possible educational opportunities for your child, the number of children in each of our four kindergarten classrooms will be kept at a maximum of 23 students. Each kindergarten teacher will also have the assistance of an instructional aide each day.
Please bring to registration: 1. A copy of your child’s Social Security card, birth certificate and baptismal certificate.
2. We will also need a copy of your child’s immunization record. 3. The registration fee is $40.00 and is nonrefundable.
This is a very exciting time for our parents and young people. We want to make your child’s school experience is a faith-
filled, engaging, and supportive experience. I thank you for your time, and I look forward to seeing you at registration. If there are any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call me at the school office (260) 484-3392 or email at [email protected]. Sincerely -Rob Sordelet, Principal
Please pray for the following members of our parish community who will marry soon.

SCRIP NEWS Winter is here! - In case there was any doubt, the calendar has officially declared that winter has arrived. We experienced a few school delays and cancellations before Christmas. So, we'd like to take this opportunity to remind you what weather delays do to the SCRIP schedule. *2-Hour Delays Mondays - The SCRIP staff will be in the office as soon as the weather permits. School orders will still be collected, filled and sent home at the end of the school day. We still welcome telephone orders. Walk in orders can be filled after we finish balancing - usually sometime after noon. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday - The SCRIP staff will be in as soon as the weather permits and is open until its normal time - noon. Fridays - SCRIP sales that are normally held from 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. in the Hession Center follow the school schedule. This means they are delayed 2 hours as well and take place from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. *School Closings Mondays - SCRIP staff will open the office, if possible. Feel free to leave an order or message on the answering machine. Be sure to leave a phone number, we will fill the order and contact you when we make it into the office. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday - The SCRIP office will be open, weather permitting. You are welcome to leave an order or message on the answering machine. Friday - SCRIP sales are cancelled. Depending on the severity of the weather, the SCRIP staff will attempt to make it in to the office to fill any phone orders. Be sure to leave a phone number, we will call you when your order is ready for pick-up.
Keep It Up - In totaling figures for the year, we saw that parish participation, once again, reached its highest level in December. We certainly understand why this happens and appreciate that we have orders from people who don't normally use SCRIP during the rest of the year. This year, we'd like to challenge you to "keep up the good work!" It seems that for each 1% added to the amount of participation we add approximately $1,000 in profit. Imagine what this could mean for our parish throughout the year.
