Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Cycle C. January 16, 2022John 2:111
…Everyone serves good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an in-
ferior one; but you have kept the good wine until now…

The good wine is recognized by the head waiter in the story of the wedding of Cana. A good wine
helps the meal to be well received and enjoyed by the guests. A good wine helps us to let go of
stresses and enjoy the company of others. No doubt Jesus is recognized as the good, best wine that
helps us to discover the best way of living a life that honors God and helps us to have lives that show
caring and goodness to others. Who of us have not drank wine that had soured and made us feel re-
pulsion. If we were invited guests at a meal or banquet we were met with the unpleasant task of fig-
uring a way to get rid of the wine and seeking a be'er wine or another be'er beverage. The miracle
of Cana helps us to remember that God seeks to help us
find the miracle of a blessed life where our lives are not
empty but full of opportuni(es to serve God and others
well. The miracle of Cana calls us to live more than ordinary
lives but best lives, like the best wine. What can we do this
week to show that we are living a best life?
Peace. Fr Richard
For some drinking even the best wine is not a good op(on,
so for them: be strong, don’t go a-er what will destroy you;
enjoy the best of what you can have.

ner.

January 22 is a special day for us to reflect
on the sanctity of life in all phases of life and
at the inception of life. This day of prayer and
promotion for the legal protection of unborn chil-
dren is an opportunity for us to remember and
promote this sacred value. What follows is a text
from the UCCB:

The over 60 million abortions since the 1973 de-
cisions ofRoe v. WadeandDoe v. Boltonreflect
with heartbreaking magnitude what Pope Fran-
cis means by a “throwaway culture.” However,
we have great trust in God’s providence. We are
reminded time and again in Scripture to seek the
Lord’s help, and as people of faith, we believe
that our prayers are heard.
The General Instruction of the Roman Missal
(GIRM), no. 373, designates January 22 as a
particular day of prayer and penance, called the
"Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Un-
born Children”: “In all the Dioceses of the United
States of America, January 22 (or January 23,
when January 22 falls on a Sunday) shall be ob-
served as a particular day of prayer for the full
restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to
life and of penance for violations to the dignity of
the human person committed through acts of
abortion.”

As individuals, we are called to observe this day
through the penitential practices ofprayer, fast-
ing and/or giving alms. Another way to take part
is through participating in special events to ob-
serve the anniversary ofRoe v. Wade. Call your
local diocese or parish to find out what events
might be taking place in your area.
