REFLECTIONS / STEWARDSHIP PAGE 3 NOVEMBER 24 2019

Brothers and Sisters,

Today we end our year-long, Sunday-by-Sunday hearing of Luke’s gospel. Over this past year Luke has called us to examine our lives to determine whether or not we are living as true disciples. We’ve heard about the brevity of life, about the need for discipline and humility, and also for hospitality and enterprise. Almost all our values have been called into ques on. Also, at the forefront of Luke’s gospel is the need for prayer and the power of the Spirit. This is a gospel that begins with shepherds receiving the good news directly from heaven. It ends with a thief being welcomed by Jesus, the Good Shepherd into paradise. Today is the thirty-fourth or last Sunday in Ordinary Time for this liturgical year, and we celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. This solemnity was established by Pope Pius XI in 1925 and celebrates an aspect of Jesus’ iden ty rather than his life. The gospel proclaims him as king by the sign over his head on the throne of a wooden cross (I.N.R.I. Jesus nazarenus rex Iudacorum-Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews). Here is a ques on for you. How is someone recognized as a king? In our first reading we hear David had been called by God and had led his people to victory in ba le, so the elders of Israel’s tribes anointed him king. In the second reading, St. Paul recognizes Jesus’ kingship for he is head of the church. In the gospel, Jesus’ fellow prisoner recognizes Jesus as innocent vic m and king. Take a moment now and consider this ques on: How do you recognize Jesus as king? In 1950, dis nguished Oxford scholar C.S. Lewis published a children’s book en tled “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.” One of the most famous characters in the book was the lion called Aslan, “King above all High Kings”, guardian and savior of the imagi-nary land of Narnia. Lewis had a gi for conveying great theological truths using imagery that was accessible to people of all ages. Wise, compassionate and strong, Aslan gives up his own life in order to save a boy doomed to die. Aslan allows himself to be hu-miliated by being shaved of his great mane before being tortured to death by the forces of evil. However, Aslan had chosen to lay down his life. Innocent of any wrongdoing, his sacrifice of love unleashes an infinitely more powerful energy than anything evil can do. Aslan portrays a kind of leadership that transcends the might and pageantry of worldly rulers. In Aslan, we glimpse an ideal of loving self-sacrifice and a strength used for others in the cause of right. This portrayal is meant of course, to remind us of our Lord Jesus Christ, whose universal kingship we commemorate today. So, returning to our earlier ques on of how is someone recognized as a king? Here is an answer for you: The test of a true king is not whether he can save himself, but whether he is will-ing to save his people. To follow Jesus is to care about others more than ourselves, and to suffer when they suffer. To follow our king is to fight the cause of jus ce and peace; and, if necessary, to lay down our lives and reputa ons in the service of God and those whom God loves. It is to iden fy ourselves with the lowly and needy people of this world, for we are followers of the Servant King.

RESPECTLIFEMINISTRYRESPECTLIFEMINISTRYRESPECTLIFEMINISTRYThank you to all who prayed and witnessed during the recent 40 Days for Life campaign; it was the largest one yet and at the last report, 454 babies were saved and reports are still coming in! God is good! "Having survived their abor-tion appointments, the children saved from abortion this fall will live to see countless precious milestones: first breaths, first words, first steps, first days of school." Here is an examples of babies that have been saved nationwide due to faithful people praying and witnessing outside abortion clinics during 40 Days for Life vigils:

A woman drove up to the Canton 40 Days for Life vigil and told prayer warriors to open the back door of her car. When they did, they found "a pudgy little guy with a cute smile. "Last year, the mother decided to have an abortion--but she couldn't stop thinking about people praying on the sidewalk. She changed her mind and left the facility. Vigil participants tearfully hugged the proud mom before saying goodbye.

The scene repeated itself days later when a motorist stopped at the red light and exhorted the campaign volunteers to keep up the good work. “You saved my son’s life,” she said, pointing to the back seat. “Your signs make a difference.” https://www.40daysforlife.com/day-39-abortion-escort-to-vigil-participant https://www.40daysforlife.com/day-41-abortion-out-baby-showers-in

ADVENTLABYRINTHPRAYERWALKSAVETHEDATE—Saturday,December7,2019The Labyrinth comes out of our ancient mystical tradition. Earliest labyrinths date to the Bronze Age. During the Mid-dle ages many Christian labyrinths were built into the loor of the naves of cathedrals. Walking it in prayer it becomes a tool for meditation that represents our life’s journey to God. Pilgrims were encouraged to walk it then go to the Altar where God comes to us. Our labyrinth is modeled from the one at the Chartres Cathedral in France, one of the few that have survived history. The earliest Christian labyrinth was found in Algeria in a church in the 4th century, at the center was a bronze plaque that read “Santa Ecclesia” Holy Church. The Pilgrim’s journey to God takes our whole life and as St. Catherine of Sienna wrote, “All the way home is home.” ThelabyrinthwillbeavailableintheParishHallfrom9:00amto1:00pm.

Excellence in Education Body, Mind & Spirit

We can be Truly Thankful that Christ is King On the feast of Christ the King, which takes place this year on November 24th, we are reminded that we know

the end of the story – and we win! That isn’t what we think about most days of the year, that someday at Christ’s return the world will be given back to Him and we will reign with Him forever. Yet it is important for us to remain grounded in that truth – we serve with the end in mind. And that is something to truly be thankful for. Serving in a ministry which serves children and their families, we get a foretaste of that kingdom now. Of course, all of us struggle through the daily tasks and stresses of living and working. Yet, when we look out at our stu-dents gathered Monday morning for our assembly, we see a little of the Kingdom of God sitting right in front of us. Each face is a glimpse of the love of God, and the group of children gathered together form a little vision of heaven – at least for us who serve them. This feeling culminates every Friday morning when we attend Liturgy together as a school community. And that makes this week so special as we prepare ourselves for Thanksgiving Day. Those of us who serve the next generation, who prepare them to meet Jesus and love him, have a privilege which few others have. We see smiles and joy every day in the faces of our parish children, and that is a great gift to be thankful for. Christ is King, and we get to glimpse a little of his reign every day. May God bless us all as we remain thankful to Him.
