REFLECTIONS / STEWARDSHIP PAGE 3 SEPTEMBER 3, 2017

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On this 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Jesus says to us that if we wish to be his disciples we must “take up your cross and follow me.” St. Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer, the founder of Opus Dei, which means “work of God,” had this to say about the cross: “The cross symbolizes the life of an apostle of Christ. It brings a strength and a truth that delights both soul and body, though some mes it is hard and one can feel the weight.”

In today’s gospel Jesus says, “whoever wishes to come a er me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me” (Mt.16:24). Le to ourselves, this would be an almost, if not impossible task. Consider the possibility that Jesus’ followers had seen criminals and revolu onaries against the Roman rule hanging on crosses on the roads of Pales ne and knew the shame and excrucia ng pain that came from such punishment. Jesus’ challenge to his disciples to “take up their cross” must have stunned them.

Jesus’ declara on of the condi ons of discipleship came a er he had foretold his death and resurrec on. And how does Peter react? He takes Jesus aside “and began to rebuke him saying ‘God forbid it Lord!’” (Mt.16:22). This prompts Jesus to label Peter as “Satan…an obstacle [stumbling block] to me” (Mt.16:23). Jesus puts Peter and us in our place; literally, “Get behind me”, i.e., where disciples belong, following the Master, imita ng the Master’s self-sacrificing love. The condi ons of discipleship also re-quire us to set our minds on divine things. The 19th century Spanish archbishop and missionary St. Anthony Mary Claret ex-plained: “The Chris an who desires to follow Jesus carrying his cross must bear in mind that the name ‘Chris an’ means ‘bearer or imitator of Christ’ and that if he wishes to bear that noble tle worthily, he must above all do as Christ charges us in the gospel; we must oppose or deny ourselves, take up the cross and follow him.”

The word “deny” is from the Greek aparneomai, meaning to disavow or give up connec on with someone or something. This means that to deny oneself is to give up self-interest; to disregard the gra fica on of one’s own needs and desires; to relinquish one’s own will to do the will of God, imita ng Jesus who gave himself over to his Father’s plan for our salva on.

Does this mean we should seek out suffering and sorrow? No! We are here to flourish, but in doing so, suffering will inevitably come our way. It is how we react to it that is crucial. We can accept and integrate it as part of our voca on to be fully human, or we can try to avoid it and resent it. In trying to become a fully good person, we will come up against many difficul es. Some will be rooted in our own sinfulness, others will be external tempta ons and difficul es. However, it is to this great voca on that Je-sus is calling us today. Final note: Luke adds a detail not found in Ma hew’s or Mark’s account of Jesus’ words. He says, “If any want to become my followers, let them…take up their cross daily and follow me” (Lk 9:23).

Jesus is a ma er of everyday life,

Faithful

The New School Year at St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish School – We Have Begun!

Our children have returned and have begun the 2017-2018 school year with great enthusiasm. Several new students could be seen talking to new friends about what they did this past summer and what their favorite foods are on the hot lunch menu. We hosted our new and returning parents to coffee and muffins after drop-off on the first day of school. We also took advantage of The Eclipse of the Century, and safely viewed a phenomenon that doesn’t happen daily. We were already learning Science on the first day of school. By now students are settling in and are becoming used to all the newness around them – new year, new grade, new teachers, new friends. It’s exciting to be a child at St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish School right now. In addition to a new year we are also excited as construction has begun on our new music rooms. Our old choir room and band room were torn down during the summer, and we look forward to the new rooms (with an additional two more to utilize) to enhance our program. This school year we also welcome three new staff members. Mrs. Mercado is our new 1st grade teacher, Ms. Silvestre is teaching 5th grade, and Mr. Knight joins our middle school teachers in 6th grade. Let’s make sure to make them feel welcome into our Saints family. It was a good first week for us combining the old and the new. That is what Catholic education is about, immersing new life in the traditions of those who have gone before so that the past and future find each other in the children we teach. OFRECERLO Así como san Pablo dice, podemos ofrecer

nuestra experiencia personal como un “sacrificio vi-vo”. Ofrezcamos nuestras oraciones diarias, pensa-mientos, palabras, acciones, alegrías y sufrimientos.

A menudo, no tenemos confianza.
