NEWSLETTER Term 2, Week 7 June 1st 2018
Dear Families,
This term our Year 6 students are preparing for their Confirmation which will occur early in Term 3. Receiving the Sacrament of
Confirmation is very special for the children as during this Sacrament they are asked to answer the questions that were answered
on their behalf at their Baptism. They will be anointed with chrism, sealed with the gift of the Spirit and asked to use the gifts and
fruits of the Holy Spirit to improve their lives as well as the lives of others. To assist the children and their families in this preparation
there will be an information night on Thursday, 14th June that all candidates and their parents are asked to attend. This evening will
begin at 7pm and will be presented by an external facilitator. I look forward to seeing all of our Year 6 families there on the night.
As I mentioned in last week’s newsletter, we have been successful in receiving funding for a Capital Grant to undertake some
building works here at St Catherine’s. The grant will allow us to refurbish two of the original eight classrooms, refurbish the
administration area and create additional meeting rooms and staff facilities. The remainder of the original classrooms will be
refurbished at a later date. The work on the administration building will be done in Stage 1 with the refurbishment of the 2
classrooms being Stage 2. It is anticipated that Stage 2 will commence at the end of the year and as such it will not be necessary to
move the Preps from their present location. The administration will be moved to the hall so that parents and visitors to the school
will have access through the gathering space of the church. This will ensure that the school remains secured and the gates across
the yard locked during school times.
This week the following students were chosen to represent the school at the Divisional Cross Country event. Yr 4 = Nyandeng M,
Oliver D, Damian S, Lucas R, Michael K. Yr 5 = Gracie O’N, Kris L, Hudson B and Yr 6 = Jackson W, Caitlyn W. Due to injury one
child was unable to compete on the day. All of the children ran terrific races and should be very proud of their achievements.
Special congratulations to Nyandeng, Damian, Oliver, Michael and Jackson who have made it through to the Regional finals on the
21st June.
Best wishes for a great weekend

Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke
it and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take it; this is my body." 23Then he took a
cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24"This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many," he said to them. 25"Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I
drink it new in the kingdom of God." 26When they had sung a hymn, they went out
to the Mount of Olives. Mark14:22-26

For our Confirmation Candidates
Why do Catholics Choose Confirmation Saints?
As we go through our preparations for Confirmation, Confirmation Saints are
chosen to be a person we want to be like, as well as someone who can pray for
us from heaven.
To want to be a Saint is very much like trying to imitate an actor, musician, or
athlete; a confirmation saint is someone holy who we want to be like!
You may have a famous person you really admire for their talent and skill. Our
Catholic heritage has produced hundreds of witnesses of holiness throughout the
centuries for us to try to be like as well.
It’s important to remember that we are never alone, as members of the Church.
“We are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses” (Hebrews 12:1). These are
the Saints who pray for us. In choosing a Confirmation Saint, we are choosing a
special friend to look out for us from Heaven while we are here on Earth.
You can’t call up a famous person you want to be like and ask them for help, but
your Confirmation Saint is someone you can talk to whenever you’re in need of
prayers!

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD) on School Students with Disability
What is the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data? Schools must now complete the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability
(NCCD) every year. It counts the number of students who receive additional adjustments or ‘help’ at school
because of a disability. The NCCD helps governments plan for the needs of students with disability.
Who is counted in the data collection? To count a student in the NCCD, schools must think through some key questions:
1. Is the student getting help at school so that they can take part in education on the same basis as other
students?
2. Is the help given because of a disability? The word ‘disability’ comes from the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA) and it can include many students.
3. Has the school talked to you or your child about the help that they provide?
4. Has the school kept records about the help they provide, the student needs and the reasons that the
student needs this help? The school will need to keep copies of tests, student work, assessments,
records of meetings, medical reports or other paperwork and information about how the student’s
learning is moving along over time.
Once the school decides that the student should be counted in the NCCD, they then choose a disability
group and one of four levels of help that has been given to the student.
What does word ‘disability’ mean in the NCCD? In the NCCD the word ‘disability’ comes from the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA). There are four types of disability that the school can choose from: sensory, cognitive, social–emotional and physical.
Many students who need help at school can be counted in the NCCD. For example, students with learning
problems, e.g. specific learning disability or reading difficulty (sometimes called dyslexia), health problems
(e.g. epilepsy or diabetes), physical disability (e.g. cerebral palsy), vision/hearing loss and social–emotional
problems (e.g. selective mutism, Autism Spectrum Disorder, anxiety).
Letters from doctors or specialists can be very helpful for schools as they plan how to support students with
their learning. Schools do not need to have these letters before they can count a
CECV NCCD Information Sheet for Parents, Carers and Guardians Page | 1
student in NCCD. Teachers can use all that they know about the child’s learning and the records that they
have collected over time to decide if a student can be counted in the NCCD.
What sort of help does the school give students? Students need different types of help at school. Some students need a little help sometimes while other
students need a lot of help nearly all the time. The type of help given depends on the needs of the student.
The help can include changes to the school buildings or grounds (e.g. ramps or things like special desks or
chairs), extra teacher help in classes, special learning programs, changes to the work they give the student
or extra adult help.
How will the NCCD be different in 2018? All schools have been counting students in the NCCD since 2015. The government will use the NCCD data as
part of the funding to schools.
What will the school need to know about my child for the NCCD? Schools work together with families to understand the needs of each student. It is helpful if families give
their child’s teacher a copy of any letters or reports they have. The letters or reports will help the school
understand the student and the help that they might need. Letters from doctors, psychologists, speech
pathologists and occupational therapists etc. can be very helpful for schools. These reports, along with
information that the teacher has (i.e. school based tests, your child’s work and learning plans), helps the
school to understand and meet the student’s needs.
What happens to the NCCD data? Who will have the NCCD information? Each school principal must check the NCCD data in August of each year. The school will give the information
to the Catholic Education Office. The school will work with the Catholic Education Office to make sure that
the NCCD data is OK before they give the data to the government. The government will not be given the
names of any students or any letters or records. Please ask your school for their privacy policy if you need
to know more.
Does the school need me to agree with them about counting my child in the NCCD? Changes were made to the law (Australian Education Act 2013 and Australian Education Regulation 2013). Schools do not need you to agree to let them count a child in the NCCD. You cannot ask the school not to count your child.
Where can I find out more? If you have questions, you can ask your child’s school for help. You can find out more by looking at these

Grandparents Day will be celebrated on Thursday, 7th June.
This day is a day for our school community to celebrate and acknowledge the role of
grandparents and the special relationship they share with their grandchildren. We
invite our grandparents to share this special day with us.
The day will commence by celebrating Grandparent’s Mass together at 9:15am.
Following this the children will be in family groups in classrooms so grandparents
and other family members can spend some time together. During this session we
would like to invite families to share their story, and ask that if Grandparents have an
object that tells a family story they bring this along on the day and share this special
item with the group. Following this we will share morning tea together. This morning
tea will be provided by the school.
After morning tea the children will put on a concert in which each grade will perform
an item. This concert will then mark the end of our Grandparent’s Day celebration
and will conclude at approximately 12:40pm.
We appreciate that not all children have Grandparents who are able to attend so
students are welcome to invite any person who is special to them.
To help us make sure we haven’t missed anyone
could you please fill in the slip below and return it to
school as soon as possible.

OSHClub St. Catherine’s Melton Team
We had so much fun this week learning all about life as a royal – being Kings and Queens. We learnt about life in Medieval times and how they were so different to life today! We had fun making crowns, castles and knights in shining armour, as well as, putting on a Royal Play. The children used characters such as Queen Elizabeth and Prince Harry to put on a wonderful performance of what they thought the days of the two famous royals would be life. Games like Red Light Green Light, Silent Ball and Night at the Museum were all popular this week too! Just a friendly reminder of the importance of signing your child in to OSHClub. Knowing that your child is safe and looked after is on the forefront of every parents’ mind, and, having them booked in to OSHClub so that our program staff are aware they need to be here is very important in this process. Please use our website or give the program a call if you require care on the day or even visit our friendly staff! Please note our Before School Care program begins each morning at 6.50am. **IMPORTANT** Please ensure you or any of your emergency contacts bring in your I.D and mobile phone if you are new to the service. We need to verify who you are, if you are new to the service, for the safety of your children.
