A Letter from Fr. Michael!!

Dear Friends,!!

Lent, the fortyday preparation for the Easter feast has begun! May the journey bring new discoveries and a re-newed sense of discipleship. Most of us participated in an Ash Wednesday Mass or service with the intention of receiving the mark of the cross on our foreheads. Likely, the priest, deacon or lay minister said these or similar words, “turn from sin and believe the Good News” or “remember you are dust and to dust you shall return.” Each seems to have its own intent, but both are reality checks on our life journey. !!

If we take the season of Lent seriously, we will heed the words to turn from sin. Let’s be authentic this season and see what is corrosive in life. Have I put wealth and status as a God in my life? Have I made myself God by judging and condemning others? Do I reflect an ideology as my life compass instead of God’s Word? Do I hurt and de-stroy others through gossip and pettiness? How do I live as a missionary disciple bringing the Good News?!!

Even these brief questions can startle most of us … and there lies the beauty of this season of reflection and con-version. Oh yes, I need this Lent to sort through where I need to adjust my course. Ashes are visible on the sur-face, and everyone knows I received them. The chal-lenge is looking inside and opening to the Good News. Maybe more compassion and openness? Maybe more time with a family member? Maybe bringing someone to Mass who needs a ride? Maybe going to a daily Mass? Maybe celebrating Confession? Stations of the Cross? Daily Prayer? Or simply a word of encouragement. And no gossip.!!

Let us work towards an Easter season that raises people to new life and it will happen if we take the mark of Ash Wednesday with a renewed sense of purpose. We are called to a new life in Christ.!!

Blessings,!Fr. Michael!

A Message from your Campus Minister,!!

Dear Rowan and Saint Bridget Family,!!

!!!!!!!!!!!!This Friday a group of students will be taking time from their busy lives to retreat. If you are a student and would still like to participate, we have a couple of spots that could still be filled in the next few days. At the retreat, we will intentionally work on two pillars of lent: prayer and fasting. We will pray to God, for and with each other, and for the world. We will explore different ways of prayer, different ways of conversing with God. We will also fast. Most of us have our own fasts, and we will not eat meat on Friday, but we will also abstain from depending on our phones and our usual habits and possessions during this retreat. I encourage all to give this a try during lent. Spend a day or two without using your phone (with an exception for emergencies). The fact that this sounds impossible to most of us gives us even more reason to try it.!!

!!!!!!!!!!!!When we return from the retreat, we will have many opportunities for almsgiving. Recently our students have donated food to the Shop at Rowan, we have explored opportunities to get involved with Good Counsel Homes, and we are starting our planning of our Relay for Life Team. We will also be inviting all parishioners to help us in our fundraising efforts to help with the cost of the retreat. Just as we did in the fall, we will be selling pretzels after each Mass on the weekend after the retreat (March 3rd

!and 4th). All donations welcome and appreciated. We thank you in advance for your continued generosity towards our ministry.!!

!!!!!!!!!!!!Another opportunity for almsgiving in multiple ways, will be a spring break trip organized by the diocese. All Rowan Students are invited to participate, but spots are limited, so please let me know soon if you are interested. Here are the details:!!

“The diocese is preparing to launch a very exciting initiative connected with the!Share the Journey Campaign. Following the desire of youth and young adults (via our diocesan online survey and listening sessions) and Pope Francis’ vision set forth in!The Joy of the Gospel, we are preparing to organize mission trips to the border with Mexico.! The Diocese of Camden’s Catholic Charities in collaboration with Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Brownsville, Texas will organize experiences to the border throughout 2018 to give Catholics the opportunity to better understand and explore the Church’s teachings on refugees and migrants.!!!!!

We will have a delegation of approximately 12 people during the week of Spring Break, March 10 18, 2016. As of right now, we are looking at students to offer $250 to help participate in the cost of the efforts.! And the mission would be from!Wednesday, March 14 to Sunday, March 18.”!I hope you will take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.!

!

!

I’ll see you around campus,!Ivan!
