30th Sunday Ordinary Time ~ PRIESTHOOD SUNDAY ~ What happens to a person who exalts himself, thinking he is better than others? What becomes of a person who thinks that because she follows some rules or procedures that her life is better than someone else’s life? Jesus, not surprisingly, has some strong opinions about this. The final line in today’s gospel states it clearly: “For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” But

what is underneath all of this? It would be dishonest to say that the Pharisee did nothing good. On the contrary, as he states: “I fast twice a week. I pay tithes on my whole income.” These can hardly be criticized; in fact, they are praiseworthy. But it reminds one of the person who is so busy bragging about himself, he can’t hear anyone else giving him a compliment. Even this, in itself, is not the problem. What good is it to do good if it only becomes the platform to judge and condemn others? Who has the right to judge? Is there any difference in condemning actions rather than persons? Might it not be just a little arrogant to condemn the rest of humanity? It seems rather strange to lump all of humanity together as: greedy, dishonest, adulterous. That doesn’t appear to be how God’s sees it. A good representative from the rest of

humanity gives quite a different view of himself. He ‘stood at a distance’ and he would ‘not even raise his eyes to heaven’. Instead, beating his breast he just prayed: “O God, be merciful to me a sinner.” The contrast is embarrassing. One is so proud he condemns all of humanity; the other is so humble he only asks God for mercy. Self-righteousness is the one thing attacked most consistently by Jesus. It is clearly the attitude that gets in the way of caring for anyone except ‘self’. Jesus’ own description of the self-righteous is the one who ‘despised everyone else’. The self-righteous truly think that their efforts are the most important ones. Yet far more important than anything that we do is what God does for us and in us! Far more important than our achievements is his love! One filled with judging and condemning is probably not empty enough to be filled with love and compassion. Isn’t it obvious why Jesus was so concerned about this? Is Jesus’ truth not our truth: “For

whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” Rev. Perry Leiker

Cheerful Giving? What could that mean?

2 Corinthians 9:6-7 St. Paul wrote in his 2nd

letter to the Corinthians advice about how to

give. He would tell them that it is not enough

to just give, but one should be a Cheerful Giver. He tells

them: “The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also

reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap

bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his

heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a

cheerful giver.”

The Annual Novena of Masses for the deceased whose names are given to us, will begin here on Saturday, November 2. The envelopes for the names are on the tables

near the altar and at the exits of the church. They can be turned in the collection basket or at the church office.

ALL SOULS DAY — Join us on Saturday, November 2, at the 8:00AM bilingual Mass to remember our deceased loved ones. During the Mass, you will be asked to place the names of your

loved ones in front of the Altar during the Offertory. NOTE: Candles will be available for sale at $5.00 each during the Mass. They will remain lit in the Vestibule, and you may take them home after Mass.

Domingo 30 del Tiempo Ordinario ~ DOMINGO DEL SACERDOCIO — Qué pasa con una persona que se enaltece a sí mismo, pensando que es mejor que los demás? Que pasa con una persona que piensa que solo por seguir algunas reglas su vida es mejor que la vida de otra persona? Jesús, como es lógico, tiene algunas opiniones fuertes al respecto. La última línea en el Evangelio de hoy afirma claramente: "Porque todo el que se enaltece será humillado, y el que se humilla será enaltecido".

Pero que hay detras de todo esto? Sería deshonesto decir que el fariseo no hizo nada bueno. Por el contrario, como el afirma: "Ayuno dos veces a la semana y pago el diezmo de todas mis ganancias”. Esto difícilmente puede ser criticado; de hecho, es digno de elogios pero si le recuerda a uno al que está tan ocupado presumiendo tanto de sí mismo, que no escucha ninguna clase de cumplidos. Aún todo esto, en sí mismo, no es el problema. ¿De qué sirve entonces hacer el bien si todo esto únicamente se convierte en una plataforma para juzgar y condenar a los demás? ¿Quién tiene el derecho de juzgar? ¿Hay alguna diferencia al condenar las acciones en vez de las personas? ¿No será un poco arrogante condenar al resto de la humanidad? Parece bastante extraño tildar a toda la humanidad de: ladrones,

injustos, o adúlteros. Eso no parece ser la forma de Dios lo ve. Un buen representante del resto de la humanidad da una visión bastante diferente de sí mismo. ‘Se quedó lejos’ y ‘no se agrevía a levantar los ojos al cielo'. En vez de eso lo único que hacía era golpearse el pecho, diciendo: “Dios mío, apíadate de mí, que soy un pecador”. El contraste es

vergonzoso. Uno de ellos es tan orgulloso que condena a toda la humanidad; el otro es tan humilde que sólo pide a Dios su misericordia. Una de las cosas que Jesús constantemente condena fuertemente es el engrandecerse a si mismo. Es claramente la actitud que impide cuidar de nadie más excepto de sí mismo. La descripción propia de Jesús sobre los que se tenían por justos y “despreciaban a los demás”. Los que se tienen por justos, piensan que sus esfuerzos son los más importantes. Sin embargo, mucho más importante que todo lo que nosotros hagamos es lo que Dios hace por nosotros y en nosotros! Mucho más importante que nuestros logros es su amor! Uno, lleno de juicios y condenaciones no está probablemente suficiente vacío para ser llenado con el amor y la compasión. No es obvio por qué Jesús estaba tan preocupado por esto? No es la verdad de Jesús nuestra verdad: "Porque todo el que se enaltece

será humillado y el que se humilla será enaltecido”.

Inspired by the vision of a victim-survivor, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles has created a prayer and information card as a tangible symbol of outreach and support to those in need. Please join in this effort and our shared hope that the resources and prayer on the card will reach those in need to bring the healing light of Christ to the darkest places of pain.
