Eddy Romil, 42, andMyriam Esdras, 30,were the winners of

the 16th annual Gustavialop-pet on Sunday, both winningthe event for the second yearin a row. Both runners live inGuadeloupe and participatedfor the second time in the“Course des As” a 10-kmrace from Saint Jean to Gus-tavia and back. A recordnumber of runners — 117 inall — left the starting line atthe stadium in Saint Jean at7:30am under a light, refreshing drizzle. Longer byabout 500 meters this year, the itinerary ran along thepond in Saint Jean beforejoining the main road towardthe airport, then up the hill tothe traffic circle and downtoward Gustavia by way ofPublic, around the town ofGustavia, then back to SaintJean by way of the road pastthe infirmary and the weatherstation. The finish line wasback at the stadium. Eddy Romil completed therace in 34 minutes and 32seconds, more than a minutein front of Bruno Coutant,43, a runner also fromGuadeloupe who participat-ed for the first time. The firstrunner from Saint Barth tocross the finish line wasDaniel Leroux, 39, who took

third place. Among thewomen runners, MyriamEsdras, was in 19th placeoverall as she swept acrossthe finish line after 43 min-utes and 18 seconds. Sheadmits she did not have toreally push herself too hard,as she did not have any seri-ous competition this year. Infact, the second woman,Myriam Benchabane (Saint-Barth) arrived 30th, morethan four minutes later, withCarole Thionville coming inthird. This year, theyoungest participant was 25-year old Vanessa Seguy, who placed 74th overall and12th in the women’s catego-ry. The oldest runner was an82-year old Swede, who notonly completed the race, butcame in 82nd overall and16th in his class of “SuperVeteran,” which had twelveparticipants. A total of 29 Swedish run-ners were on the starting linefor the 16th annual Gus-tavialoppet (which means“Race of Gustavia” inSwedish), and which servesas a reminder that SaintBarth was under Swedishrule for almost 100 years—from 1784 to 1878— beforebeing returned to France, itsformer ruler. In addition tolocal runners, and those

from Guadeloupe and Swe-den, there was also an Ital-ian, Giuseppe Gazzari whocame in fourth, twoVenezuelans —MiguelRomero (9th place) andMondolfi Aleisa (42ndplace), an American, Mick-äel Cornish (26th place), aBelgian, Jos Verjans (37thplace), and one runner fromSwitzerland, Etienne Jaeger(66th place). The event kicked off the daybefore with the “Foulées desTi-Moun,” various races forchildren in the sports stadi-um in Saint Jean. And onSunday morning, in additionto the 10-km marathon, there was also an 8-km“Healthy Heart” walk inwhich almost 100 peopleparticipated. Rosa and Tom,11 years old, arrived first, crossing the finish linetogether.

Oddly enough, thenose-cone of anAmer ican-made

missile was found on Mon-day, November 13, near thebeach at Anse Maréchal, asreported the prefecture inMartinique, where the clos-est French civil securityoffice is based. Two bombdisposal experts came toSaint Barth from Mar-tinique, accompanied by anarmed forces specialist forthe Antilles, to conduct testson this missile part that isproperty of the United StatesNavy and was manufacturedby Lockheed Martin Missile& Space Company, as indi-cated by the labels on theinterior. The tests revealedthat there was nothing dan-gerous, explosive, or

radioactive to worry about. At the same time, tests doneon samples taken from thenose cone show that therewas no danger to the envi-ronment either: “This fuse-

lage is not dangerous, and isnot toxic in any way,” saidMagalie Audrin, press repre-sentative for the prefecture.“This missile was most like-ly part of an underwater bal-listic exercise,” she added, noting that such events arenot unusual. Many armiespossess this type of missile, including France, and exe-cute this type of maneuverunder the control of an inter-national authority run by theUnited Nations, whichserves as a clearing-housefor the type of these militaryexercises. It is rare, or oneshould say, almost impossi-ble to find traces: the residueis usually recovered or hassunk. In fact, according tothe prefecture in Martinique,

this is the first time that suchmissile debris has beenfound on the French coast. On Monday, November 20,the French authorities werestill waiting for a responsefrom the American govern-ment; France had asked theAmericans to recover theremains of the missile.Marine Park agents on a sur-veillance mission first notedthe nose cone, which ismade of a composite ofwood and cellulose (similarto gliders) on the coast near

Anse Maréchal—at the farend of the beach near theGuanahani. They reported itto the gendarmerie on Mon-day, November 13, but localfisherman had already seenit the day before, on Sunday,November 12, when it wasfloating in the water, nosedown. The relatively goodcondition of the fuselageindicates that the missilewas shot not too many daysbefore it was found, although there is no proofamong the elements found.A “ballistic” missile is aweapon-delivery vehiclethat has a ballistic trajectoryover most of its flight path, yet is not powerful enoughto enter into orbit.

■ PuzzleThere's no math involved. The grid has numbers, butnothing has to add up toanything else. You solvethe puzzle with reasoningand logic. It's fun. It's chal-lenging. It's addictive!

“Fill in the grid so thatevery row, every column, and every 3x3 box con-tains the digits 1 through9."That's all there is to it.
