Main Point: Jesus tells the disciples clearly that he must suff er, he must die, and they need to turn to him to be saved.

Discussion Questions Read Mark 8:27-33 from the Bible Story (page 1-3)

1. Who is Jesus? (Think about all the things we have learnt about Jesus so far in Mark. Jesus is the Forgiver, the Healer, the Grower, and the King!)

2. Why do you think people thought Jesus was John the Baptist or Elijah? Was it because: (C - Jesus was baptising people and talking about the Kingdom of God, just like John. He did amazing miracles of healing, raising people from the dead, just like Elijah or the prophets.)

A. They had the same type of beard.

B. They also performed amazing miracles.

C. They were Jesus’ brothers.

3. What does the word Messiah mean? (It means the anointed one in Hebrew - like a king is anointed with oil. When someone was anointed, it was a symbol that they were set apart for a special purpose. Jesus is the rescuer the Jews had been waiting for.)

4. How does Jesus plan to defeat evil? (He taught them that he must suffer, be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, he must be killed, and three days rise again.)

5. Why do you think Peter got angry at Jesus? (Because Jesus and God’s plan sounds difficult and deadly! This didn’t seem like a way to win. And yet this was God’s plan. Even to Jesus’ closest followers, Jesus was surprising.)

2. Why do you think people thought Jesus was John the Baptist, Elijah, or one of the prophets? ( Jesus was baptising people and talking about the Kingdom of God, just like John. He did amazing miracles of healing, raising people from the dead, just like Elijah or the prophets. No one could quite put Jesus in the right category.)

3. What does the word Messiah mean? (It means the anointed one in Hebrew - like a king is anointed with oil. When someone was anointed, it was a symbol that they were set apart for a special purpose. 8. Re-read vs 34. What are some examples of denying yourself? You can use the A3 sheet to brainstorm what that looks like at home and at school. (It means turning to Jesus, rather than focusing on yourself. It means listening and obeying what Jesus tells us in the Bible, praying to him about everything we are happy and worried about, and sometimes doing difficult things to love, care and forgive other people. It might mean saying no to events on Sunday mornings so that you can go to church; it might mean reading the Bible instead of watching another episode of TV or playing another level on a video game; it might mean helping your family with chores with a loving attitude instead of getting upset with them.)

9. Does Jesus say following him will be easy? Will it be good? ( Jesus doesn’t promise that following him will be easy. But, it will be the best thing we ever do. There is nothing we can do to earn God’s love, but he gives it to us when we turn and trust in Jesus.)

Prayer Dear Lord Jesus, thank you that you came to earth, that you suffered for us, that you died and rose to life again. We pray that you would help us every day, every minute and every second to follow and love you. We pray for our friends and family who don’t know you yet, that they would also come to love and follow you. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
