From the Pastor’s Desk St. Joseph the Carpenter

As this is the year of St. Joseph, I would like to periodically write letters to you cultivating devotion to St. Joseph.

St. Joseph is often depicted in sacred art with the Child Jesus in his workshop. It is a beautiful site to see Jesus learning the trade of a carpenter from his foster father St. Joseph. While we are in this pandemic, it has become very common for parents to work at home and children to stay home while receiving education through online learning. It may not be so different than in the house of the Holy Family in Nazareth. Many fathers have a tool shed and a simple workshop within the property of their home.

We do not know for sure where St. Joseph’s workshop was, however, we can presume it was near to his home. In a similar way, today’s children can see their parents working while they are at home and perhaps that they too will follow their father or mother’s trade.

Just imagine Jesus, the Eternal Son of the Father, in His humanity learning the trade of being a carpenter from his foster father St. Joseph. In Christ’s divinity you can’t teach Him anything. However, Jesus can be taught through his Humanity.

Since one doesn’t know for certain, some Catholics piously contend that St. Joseph taught Jesus to make the actual cross in which He would be crucified. The mystery of Jesus being a carver of wood with the understanding that he was placed after his birth on the wood of a manger, offered the Last Supper on a wooden altar, and was crucified by the wood of the Cross, is all part of God’s wondrous plan.

Although Jesus was descended from the line of David, He did not live in luxury. He lived in the humble home of St. Joseph and Mary. The humility of the Holy Family was so distinguished that their own neighbors were in shock at the signs and wonderous deeds of Jesus that they said, “Is he not the carpenter’s son?” Yes, He is! That is the humble of spirit of St. Joseph. All the focus goes to his wife and to Jesus.

There was a young couple I married a few years ago. I happened to know the groom’s parents very well. I noticed the interactions of his parents especially that the husband hardly spoke, and the wife did much of the talking. At their son’s wedding I said to the groom: “Joseph be just like your father, keep silent and let your wife do all the talking.” In Sacred Scripture, St. Joseph doesn’t say a single word. He simply listens.

St. Joseph is a man like so many men who provided for His family with great labor and love. He did so with great dignity, and purity. In closing, I would like to thank our fellow staff members who worked very hard in shoveling and plowing the snow to make our Church accessible to God’s children.

In Jesus and Mary,

Certain content of this letter was taken from Consecration to St. Joseph by Father Donald Calloway.

Focus on Religious Freedom

www.cffor.org

If we are to guard against ignorance and remain free, it is the

responsibility of every American to be informed -

Thomas Jefferson

Parents - Do You Know What Your Children Are Learning in School?

Are they taught that religious freedom is the first and the foundational freedom?

It is generally agreed that John Dewey (1859-1952) is the Father of American Education and his

contributions to government schooling are still recognized as being monumental even though he died

over 60 years ago," wrote researcher Brad Harrub. (1) When at Columbia University, he put in

place a framework for training thousands of teachers which shaped thinking on education in the U.S. and around the world.

However, Dewey was not primarily an educator but a philosopher and psychologist and not concerned with teaching new information. He was concerned with inculcating new attitudes and was considered a social engineer; wrote education reformer, Bruce Price. (2)

Dewey’s thought was strongly influenced by Charles Darwin’s theories and he conceived of education as synonymous with an evolutionary process. Therefore, he believed the individual’s duty was not to himself, God, or his family, but to his culture. Dewey once wrote, “Children who know how to think for themselves spoil the harmony of the collective society which is coming where everyone is interdependent views on philosophy and education flowed from the naturalist views of Darwin. He replaced Christianity with secular humanism which he described in his essay, A Common Faith: Here are all the elements for a religious faith ...Such a faith has always been the common faith of mankind.

It remains for us to make it explicit and militant. “(4)

The Decline of American History in Public Schools - Part 1

“Those who don’t know history are destined to repeat it”

Edmund Burke, statesman.

“By reducing the importance of U.S. history in public schools, we deprive American children of an

opportunity to learn their heritage.... The study of history cultivates an understanding and appreciation

for the ideals the nation was founded upon,” wrote news editor Daniel Doherty. (5) The foundational

ideals of freedom: freedom of religion, freedom of conscience, and freedom of speech, are rarely

emphasized or even taught.

Sadly, only 13% of U.S. High School seniors showed proficiency in their knowledge of American

history, according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress 2010.

First Reading JB 7:1-4,6-7

Job spoke, saying:

Is not man’s life on earth a drudgery?

Are not his days those of hirelings?

He is a slave who longs for the shade,

a hireling who waits for his wages.

So I have been assigned months of misery,

and troubled nights have been allotted to me.

If in bed I say, “When shall I arise?”

then the night drags on;

I am filled with restlessness until the dawn.

My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle;

they come to an end without hope.

Remember that my life is like the wind;

I shall not see happiness again.

Brothers and sisters:

If I preach the gospel, this is no reason for me to boast,

for an obligation has been imposed on me,

and woe to me if I do not preach it!

If I do so willingly, I have a recompense,

but if unwillingly, then I have been entrusted with a stewardship.

What then is my recompense?

That, when I preach,

I offer the gospel free of charge

so as not to make full use of my right in the gospel.

Although I am free in regard to all,

I have made myself a slave to all

so as to win over as many as possible.

To the weak I became weak, to win over the weak.

I have become all things to all, to save at least some.

All this I do for the sake of the gospel,

so that I too may have a share in it.

Second Reading 1 Cor 9:16-19, 22-23

On leaving the synagogue

Jesus entered the house of Simon and Andrew with James and John.

Simon’s mother-in-law lay sick with a fever.

They immediately told him about her.

He approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up.

Then the fever left her and she waited on them.

When it was evening, after sunset,

they brought to him all who were ill or possessed by demons.

The whole town was gathered at the door.

He cured many who were sick with various diseases,

and he drove out many demons,

not permitting them to speak because they knew him.

Rising very early before dawn, he left

and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed.

Simon and those who were with him pursued him

and on finding him said, “Everyone is looking for you.”

He told them, “Let us go on to the nearby villages

that I may preach there also.

For this purpose have I come.”

So he went into their synagogues,

preaching and driving out demons throughout the

whole of Galilee.

Someone is needed to be present at all times during adoration. If you would like to sign up for a

scheduled time to attend please call the rectory

We can show our adoration to God in many ways,

but in Eucharistic Adoration, we spend time

adoring the true presence of Christ in the

Eucharist. The Catechism of the Catholic Church

tells us that, “Adoration is the first attitude of man

acknowledging that he is a creature before his

Creator. It exalts the greatness of the Lord who

made us and the almighty power of the Savior who

sets us free from evil. Adoration is homage of the

spirit to the “King of Glory,” respectful silence in

the presence of the “ever greater” God. Adoration

of the thrice-holy and sovereign God of love

blends with humility and gives assurance to our

supplications.” (CCC 2628)

Pray for Vocations Please keep our Bishops, Priests and

Seminarians in your prayers.

Mary, Mother of Jesus, throw your mantel of purity over our priests.

Protect them, guide them, and keep them in your heart.

Be a Mother to them, especially in times of

discouragement and loneliness. Love them and keep them belonging complete-

ly to Jesus. Like Jesus, they, too, are your sons, so keep

their hearts pure and virginal. Keep their minds filled with Jesus, and put Jesus always on their lips,

so that He is the one they offer to sinners and to all they meet.

Mary, Mother of Jesus, be their Mother, loving them and bringing them joy.

Take special care of sick and dying priests, and the ones most tempted.

Remember how they spent their youth and old age, their entire lives serving and giving all to

Jesus. Mary, bless them and keep a special place for

them in your heart. Give them a piece of your heart,

so beautiful and pure and immaculate, so full

of love and humility, so that they, too, can

grow in the likeness of Christ. Dear Mary, make them humble like you,

Background Screening Update

The Office for the Protection of Children and Young People: The Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People (The Charter) promulgated by the

Bishops of the United States in 2OO2 outlines specific practices and guidelines providing standards

of safety in parishes and dioceses throughout the United States. As directed in The Charter, the

Diocese of Rockville Centre requires all employees, clergy, and volunteers to complete three

requirements within thirty days of employment or volunteering:

1. Attend Protecting God's Children Program (Virtus)

2. Sign the Codes of Conduct;

3. Complete a background screen application. The Diocese requires all those who remain in active

ministry be rescreened at 5 yr. intervals. volunteers/employees.

A Word on Background Screening of Volunteers:

The Office for the Protection of Children and Young People (OFPCYP) has streamlined the volunteer

application process enabling volunteers to complete the three safe environment requirements in one

step. lndividuals wishing to volunteer in a parish or school:

1. Register to attend a Protecting God's Children class and create a Virtus account on the Virtus

website: www.Virtus.org

2. Electronically acknowledge the Diocesan Code of Conduct- provided during the Virtus registration

process.

3. Follow the instructions to complete the Sterling Volunteers background screening

application background offered during the Virtus registration process.

Active Volunteers: lf you are active in a parish ministry, have already attended Virtus and have been background

screened you may be at-or beyond-the 5yr. rescreening requirement. lf this is the case, you will

receive an email from Sterling Volunteers asking you to complete the background screening

application on-line. You may access the background screening application by following the prompt in

the email or logging into your Virtus account. Please be aware-this is not a scam nor has your e-mail

been hacked. The OFPCYP has been working with your parish to update the Safe Environment

records and noted it is time for you to be rescreened. You may also be prompted to electronically

resign the Code of Conduct when you log into your Virtus account.

Edit Your Virtus Account: To access your Virtus account: www.Virtus,org You will need your User name and Password. If you

need assistance, please contact Virtus: 1-888-847-8870 or [email protected]. Once in your

account, review your account information-particularly your e-mail address. lf your account requires

updating, please hit the TOOLBOX tab at the top of the screen. On the left side of your screen in the

green column click "Update My Account" You will be able to make the necessary changes-please

remember to hit the SAVE button at the bottom ofthe screen.
