Dear St. Barnabas Families, I would like to personally invite you to our 3rd Annual Family STEM Night November 15th from 6-8 pm in the St. Barnabas Gym. This year’s theme is "There's a place 4 me @ NASA". Wear your fa-vorite NASA/Space shirt, STEM shirt or dress up like an astronaut. Highlights include:

Fun for all ages and it's FREE! (accepting non-perishable food items at the door for the St. Barnabas canned food drive)

Activities include: rockets, robotic arms, space landers, virtual reality solar system and story time with an astronaut.

Meet actual engineers and talk with STEM students from Marian University.

Raffle Prizes every 30 minutes!

Infinite amounts of learning and fun!

STEM continues to shape the culture of our school. Let me be the first to tell you that our children are learning and growing in ways that are going to benefit them in their future! This week, we were visited by the Pam Bernards, Ed. D. She is the Director of Professional Development for the National Catholic Edu-cation Association. While at St. Barnabas School, Mrs. Bernards visited classrooms and asked students about their experience of STEM Education. “We get to collaborate.” “When we are given a problem, we have certain constraints we have to work in to solve it.” “We use the engineering and design process.” “During a design, things often do not workout the first time. We have to redesign.” “It is okay to fail during a STEM lesson.” “I love to test our builds.” “We get to work with people we might not normally work with.” “We have to be creative to problem solve.” The Partnership for 21st Century Learning lists seven “soft skills” that employers are looking for in poten-tial employees. Look at the list and see if you can see these skill reflected in student statements.

Here are seven “soft skills” employers are looking for in potential hires:

1. Adaptability - responding well to challenges will help you grow personally and professionally.

2. Resilience - learning from experience and boldly attacking subsequent challenges.

3. Optimism - being the most positive person in any meeting - generate good energy and good will.

4. Integrity - being trustworthy, honest, and authentic.

5. Critical Thinking - challenging assumptions and finding new and bold solutions.

6. Proactivity- thinking and acting ahead.

7. Empathy - respecting and nurturing all relationships with co-workers and clients

To say that Mrs. Bernards from NCEA was impressed with your children is an understate-ment! Keep up the good work Warriors! We are proud of you! Join us for STEM Family Night! Come see what it’s all about! God bless you today and always, Mrs. Maddox, Proud Principal

Congratulations to Noah Kunz. He was ac-cidentally left off the 8th Grade Honor Roll List. Way to go Noah!

Hello St. Barnabas! My name is Miranda Tworek, I am a licensed social worker, and I will be taking over the school counselor role. I was born and raised in Indianapolis. I grew up in what used to be Holy Trinity parish and my family and I now attend St. Barnabas. I majored in psychology at IU Bloomington, and received my masters in social work from the IU school of social work, go Hoosiers!

I have over 10 years of experience working with children in various employment

positions and most recently I worked as a school based mental health therapist with Adult and Child. I will be at St. Barnabas Tuesdays and Thursdays and work the rest of the week for a nonprofit that serves local veteran families. I live on the south side of Indianapolis with my husband and I am a new mom to our 1 year old son. I enjoy hiking, yoga, open water swimming, spending time with my family and exploring new Indianapolis restaurants! I'm excited to be taking on this new position and look forward to my time here!

It is our goal for VBS to return to St. Barnabas School for the summer of 2019, but it cannot happen without you! We are currently looking for a team of parents to be the coordinators of this year's program! If you might be interested in serving our school and parish community in this way, please email Mrs. Carissa Maddox at [email protected] or Mrs. Christine Helle at [email protected] and let us know. This program will be in addition to, not in replace of, Totus Tuus. Thank you for your gifts of time and talent!

Congratulations to Jake Irwin. He was accidentally left off the 5th

Grade Honor Roll List.

Way to go Jake!
