Congratulations to our first graduates, and welcome to the 2013 cohort! Deb Navedo, Director [email protected] The First Scholars Partners in Development Cohort: The Partners in Development cohort comprised 19 scholars who joined us during the 2011–2012 academic year to pilot the two on-campus seminars as well as the research methods and technology courses. These champions of innovation are pictured above at the 2012 Convocation Seminar, including Dr. Tham Kum Ying, who brought 10 scholars from Singapore’s Tan Toch Seng Hospital and the National Health Group. 2012 Program Launch In September, 2012, 10 scholars were welcomed as new members of the initial class. Arriving from across the nation and pictured here with Dr. James Gordon of MGH Learning Laboratory, this group quickly coalesced and embraced their professional diversity. The students' backgrounds include medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy, business, and psychology. This program attracted scholars from various mid-career positions, many of whom were already in leadership positions seeking to formalize their mastery of educational principles. About 92 percent came to the program through the Harvard Macy Institute collaboration. Completing their studies with Dr. Liz Armstrong and her faculty, the scholars have reported finding the Master of Science in Health Professions Education degree a logical next step, reporting that the HPEd Program was philosophically aligned with the Harvard Macy Institute. 2012–2013 Scholars 5 senior leaders (Assoc./Asst. Dr. Leichtner is Associate Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition, and Clinical Vice Chair of the Department of Medicine at Children's Hospital Boston. He maintains an active clinical practice and is widely published in pediatric gastroenterology, especially in the areas of celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease. As a member of the Partners in Development cohort for the MSHPEd degree, and as representative to the program planning committee, he helped shape this HPEd program from the design phase onward. He is an integral member of the program's interprofessional leadership team. Dr. Leichtner's primary area of interest in health professions education has been in faculty development, and he is the founder and director of the Boston Children’s Hospital Academy. HPEd Advisory Committee Set The MSHPEd Planning Committee has completed its development work. Moving forward, we are convening an Advisory Committee of thought leaders and key stakeholders. The purpose of this committee is to offer external feedback on annual reports, suggest new initiatives, and serve as liaisons to the professional community. Dr. Liz Armstrong has generously agreed to chair this committee for the first two years. We anticipate that close to a dozen field experts will meet twice a year on campus to perform this vital service. 2013 Commencement Day The MGH Institute celebrated its annual Commencement Day on May 9. In the hours beforehand, the HPEd community met at the residence of Associate Provost Peter Cahn for the first HPEd Program Hooding Ceremony. Pictured here are the five graduates who were hooded, joined by their families and the faculty. The party then proceeded to the Hynes Convention Center, where they joined 492 other Institute graduates. Over 2,000 family and friends attended the event. Hooding at Convocation Seminar During the annual Convocation Seminar in June, four additional graduates were hooded. A celebration dinner was held at the MGH Russell Museum of Medical History and Innovation. Dr. Liz Armstrong spoke of her vision for this innovative interprofessional master's degree program that would build on Harvard Macy Institute courses. Dr. Jim Gordon spoke of his hopes for this graduate program in health professions education as a integral part of fellowship training. Dr. Robert Simon congratulated the first alumnus of the simulation concentration, and Dr. BA Harris added to the celebration by recounting the coordinated efforts to move this program from vision and concept proposal through Board of Higher Education approval and implementation. The evening was a fitting culmination of scholar efforts, faculty mentorship, and the launch of a community of practice as the graduates spoke of hoping to return in 2014 to help facilitate future Convocation Seminars as alumni. 2013 HPEd Education Symposium Following in the footsteps of 2011 keynote speaker Dr. Clayton Christensen of the Harvard Business School (HBS), the HPEd Program welcomed Dr. Anita Tucker, also from HBS, in June 2013 to speak about the similarities between hospital supply chains and educator preparations. The annual Health Professions Education Symposium, also known as the HPEd Convocation Seminar, was open to Institute faculty and featured poster presentations as well as oral presentations of scholarly projects. At the dinner afterwards, a slideshow celebrating the 2011–2013 academic years was presented. Hooding in Singapore While in Singapore to teach a related course with Partners HealthCare International (PHI), Program Director Deb Navedo met with graduates and celebrated their hooding in an event held at Dr. Nicholas Chew’s home. HPEd faculty member Dr. Mary Knab has visited Singapore to teach in subsequent modules of the same PHI course, deepening the relationship. Staying Connected and Networking The Health Professions Education Program has created a networking group on LinkedIn, and we encourage all participants, alumni, faculty, and friends of the program to stay connected. You can also follow program events and get the news via Twitter @MGHInstHPEd, and make sure to stay tuned to the Institute's new blog The Pulse. As this community grows, there will be opportunities for alumni to contribute in the form of updates and stewardship. Contact Deb Navedo if you are interested.
