Breaking Open the Word Second Sunday of Easter Sunday

(Divine Mercy)

Jesus presents himself to the disciples for a reason, to help them believe in God. To help them with this belief, he gave them the Holy Spirit. This was important because with the Holy Spirit they had life and they gave life to others, by heal-ing both spirit and body. The incident with Thomas was a depiction of how many of us believe. With hardened hearts, we believe as Thomas did. We seek for human confirmation that we can relate to. This is best described as a doubtful heart with a lack of faith. Jesus appears the second time. While it seems that it was only for Thomas, it was for all those who doubted and did not truly believe, not just then but in the generations to come. God gives us the help we need to believe in God. If you are struggling with your faith, reflect on this gospel. Seek the love he has for his people and his work to help us believe. Acknowledge his forgiveness when we wander off the righteous path. And experience the fulfillment in your heart in this life and the life to come by following Jesus. Deacon Andy Calunod

Daily Prayer This is a wonderful week to pray in joy at God's merci-ful love for us, and for the unending forgiveness we are offered. We know we have done nothing to deserve that forgiveness and that we cannot earn it, and yet it is ours, if only we can accept it. Over and over this week, we are invited to place our trust in God. The ever-human disciples didn't always put aside their fears, and neither do we. This might be a good week to spend time with Jesus looking at the fears in our own lives which keep us locked up away from others. What would it mean for our lives and for the relation-ships in our lives if we were willing to let go of “the way we have always done things” and to beg Jesus for help? Our lives can change. We have a standing offer from God to fall into his forgiving embrace. Dear Jesus, it feels impossible to believe that my life can change, that I can move out of this rut I am in. I know I don't always live my life feeling your love and being my best self. Help me to trust in you, to drop my defenses and to feel how deeply I am loved and forgiven by you. Give me the courage to feel it in my heart when you say, “Don't be afraid” and “Peace be with you.” I so long for that peace in my life but it feels so far away sometimes. Help me to believe in you, to drive away the doubts and unbelief that harden my heart. I know my life can change, if only I can say with all my heart, “I trust in you, Lord. I believe in your mercy and I know that with your help, my life can be healed.” Creighton University Online Ministries

Divine Mercy Sunday On April 30, 2000, the first Sunday following Easter, Pope John Paul II canonized Sister Faustina Kowalska and declared in his homily of that day his desire that the “Second Sunday of Easter … from now on through-out the world will be called ‘Divine Mercy Sunday.’” In conjunction with the Pope’s wishes, on May 5, 2000, the Congregation for Divine Wor-ship and the Discipline of the Sacraments issued a decree of-ficially establishing the Second Sunday of Easter as “Divine Mercy Sunday.” The story of St. Faustina Kow-alska reveals the inspiration behind the Divine Mercy devotion. Helena Kowalska was born in Poland on Au-gust 25, 1905. As a small child she reported seeing bright lights during her night prayers. In 1925, she en-tered the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy, taking the name Faustina. On February 22, 1931, Sister Faustina experienced a new and life-changing vision of Christ. She saw him wearing a white robe and raising his right hand in blessing with his left hand resting on his heart from which flowed two rays of light. Jesus told her, “Paint an image according to the pattern you see, with the prayer, Jesus, I trust in you.” Faustina could not paint, and struggled to convince her incredulous sisters about the truth of her vision. Ultimately she persuaded her spiritual director, Father Michael Sopocko, that the vision was real. He found an artist to create the painting that was named The Divine Mercy and shown to the world for the first time on April 28, 1935. She died of tuberculosis at age 33. Pope John Paul II canonized her on April 30, 2000. The Divine Mercy devotion fosters the virtue of trust in God’s mercy that finds its fulfillment in the liturgy of Reconciliation and the Holy Eucharist. Americancatholic.org.

The Chaplet of Divine Mercy Our Lord gave St. Faustina a set of prayers to invoke His mercy, called the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. On standard rosary beads, pray the following prayers: First, on the crucifix, one Our Father, Hail Mary and the Apostles’ Creed. On each Our Father bead, pray: “Eternal Father, I offer You the most precious Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins, and those of the whole world.” On each Hail Mary bead, pray: “For the sake of His sorrowful passion, have mercy on us, and on the whole world.” Repeat for five decades. To conclude, pray three times: “Holy God, holy mighty One, holy immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world

May Crowning May 1 In May we honor Mary, Our Lady and Queen of Peace, pro-tector of the Diocese of Honolulu. We will do the crowning of Mary on Wednesday, May 1, at 4:30 p.m. with crowning, flower giving and 5 p.m. Mass to follow. Please bring flow-

ers in honor of our Blessed Mother.

Memorare

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored

thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided.

Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand,

sinful and sorrowful.

O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen
