Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Here we are at the beginning of the Church’s
New Year: the Season of Advent. It is a season of
preparation, with penance, mixed with some
fasting to prepare us for the Coming of Christ in
History (Christmas), the Coming of Christ in
Mystery (the sacraments), and the Coming of
Christ in Majesty (the Second Coming).
The first three weeks of Advent will focus on the
Second Coming, while during the last week; the
liturgical focus will be on the immediate prepara-
tion for Christmas. Naturally, we should always
prepare with prayer and fasting to receive the Holy
Eucharist anytime. We should also prayerfully
examine our hearts in preparation to receive the
Lord’s mercy as we are in line for confession.
The first reading, from the Prophet Jeremiah, is full
of hope and joy. This a Prophet who lived in exile
with his own people, yet who believe with his
whole being that God would renew His promises
of love and care for His people. That is to say: we
believe that the world is redeemed and that
redemption is possible for us when we believe in
Jesus.
When we come to read today’s Gospel, we should
not be surprised that he asks us to keep vigilant.
We don’t have to get involved with wondering
when the world will end: it is always ending. We
don’t have to start watching for all the strange
signs since they are always present. The point of
this kind of literature is to say: Now is the time!
Pay attention! Live well in every moment of your
life.
So today, as we begin Advent, we can ask this
loving God to renew our desires and attractions for
Him. With Advent, let us begin a new life of hope
and holiness.
Live well your life.
Fr. Antony Joseph
