Winter Night Shelter UpdateAfter the success of last year’s first

season of a North Battersea night of the Winter Night Shelter, it very

much looks like Covid-19 will prevent us from running the Shelter at the

Katherine Low Settlement this year. However, Glass Door are working

with Government to find an alternative solution to providing safe

space for homeless guests to have somewhere to eat and sleep over the winter months, probably in a static

location. They warmly invite members of St Mary’s who are

interested to join a special Town Hall Zoom Meeting on the Future of

Shelters on Thursday 17th September at 6.30pm.

Notices for the Coming Weeks

Church Family Picnic After ChurchBeen missing spending time with church friends? We’re going to have a church picnic after the 11am service on 20th September. Bring your own food and drink and something to sit on.

Canon Simon Butler is on holiday this week.

Reverend Aaron Kennedy is on holiday 10th September to 17th September. Our worship next Sunday will be conducted by our Archdeacon, John Kiddle. The Parish Office remains open throughout.

New Arrivals: Darya Igder & Mike Kiunisala are expecting their first child in October. Grace and Aaron Cowley Kennedy are expecting the birth of their second child in the New Year. Congratulations to both couples.

Update on the Proposed New Morning ServiceThanks to all who have offered their thoughts about this. We are going to trial a new service – aimed at families with both children and busy Sundays – on the First Sunday of the Month at 9.30am for no more than 45 minutes. The first of these will be on Sunday 4th October, and there will be a special post-service time for refreshments and getting to know one another. For more details – including the name of the service – look out in the coming weeks.

Electoral Roll Revision: Once a year we revise our membership list – confusingly known as the Church Electoral Roll. If you have joined the church in the past year and consider St Mary’s your spiritual home, please complete an Electoral Roll form available at the back of church and put it in the postbox at the top of the south stairs, close to where you came in to church today.

St Mary’s Annual Parochial Church Meeting Sunday October 11th during and after the 11am Service: The annual meeting is an important moment in the Church year, and this year it is especially important because Simon and other PCC members will be presenting our exciting vision for the coming five years – our Mission Action Plan. We will also elect four new members to serve on Battersea Deanery Synod and two to serve on the PCC. Nomination forms are available in church.

New PCC Secretary: we are looking for someone to serve in this administrative role, which comes with PCC membership. Speak to Simon to find out more.

Parish Investment Property: We are currently purchasing a lovely 2-bedroom flat in Vicarage Crescent as an investment property. If you, or someone you know, might be interested in becoming our tenant, please contact Simon or Richard Cross as soon as possible. The property is likely to be available in October. The PCC also intends to hold a sensible cash reserve, while investing the remainder for the long-term in equities.

The Regenerate Tuk-Tuk is now in its new home in the Putney Exchange. A new vehicle is being prepared to replace in next month, providing daily refreshments in the Church Yard. The community shop is currently under review: it was begun on a trial basis and we await the outcome of the review.

Reading Scripture:Some ResourcesCanon Simon Butler

As we begin a new term at St Mary’s, it seems like a good opportunity to turn again to our Rule of Life. My plans to develop our

quietly launched Rule of Life took a back seat when Covid-19 arrived, but over the coming term, I’d like to invite us to think about taking up the Rule and its six simple tenets:

1. Pray 4. Tell2. Read 5. Serve3. Learn 6. Give

After offering some ideas and ways of praying last week, this week I offer you a few resources to help you to read the Bible. It is best, I think, to have some sort of structure to bible reading, rather than simply to pick up the Bible and reading at random. I alsothink it’s important to remember that first and foremost reading the bible in an aid to relationshipwith God, rather than an exercise in increasing knowledge. If it is about knowing then it is knowing God rather than knowing the details of authorship, history and ancient Greek and Hebrew that count!

But, if we think we could do with some helps to pray, then here are a few thoughts of where to get help. Let’s begin with a couple of apps

Reflections for Daily Prayer sits with theofficial Daily Prayer app from the Church

of England. Each day there is a Bible passage and a short reflection on the passage written by an excellent team of scholars and bible teachers. This is an app that you have to subscribe to, but at £1.99 a month or £11.99 for year it represents very good value indeed.

Scripture Union’s Daily Bread is a pattern of daily Bible reading with a devotional heart. It offers a structure for both prayer and Bible

reading with a practical, down to earth approach. For those who want to go a bit deeper, or who value a slightly more intellectual, but still practical approach, the Bible Reading Fellowship’s Guidelinesapp offers an excellent alternative. Both retail at about £10-11 a year, and both have printed alternatives.

Lectio Divina is an ancient way ofreading and praying the Bible from the Benedictine monastic tradition. It’s a dyamic way of reading the

Scriptures based on a four-fold structure: reading, meditating, praying and contemplating. If you want to try it out for yourself, you can do this in a number of ways:• You can join the Wednesday morning Zoom call –

click the link and enter the passcode 259290.• You can try the resources produced by The Bible

Society which are based on the three year Sunday readings.

• You can try the Lectio 365 app produced by the 24-7 prayer movement.

A Lectionary is another methodical way of reading the Bible. This is an ordered pattern of readings which, over time, can take you through almost the whole Bible. The Church of England Lectionary gives

a daily pattern of readings for the three main services a day – Morning and Evening Prayer and HolyCommunion. If you were to read theMorning and Evening readings each day you would cover the whole bible in a year, but the readings are a bitlonger than the other resources and

– both an advantage and a disadvantage – you are free to make of the readings what you will without any commentary from others. The lectionary is available as a book to buy, a download or, by using the Daily Prayer app or the free feed from the Church of England website, you can find the readings for each service helpfully laid out for each service. Nicky Gumbel, the Vicar of Holy Trinity, Brompton also has a bible in a year app which isanother useful resource.

Happy reading!

Sunday 11th

October 2020 during and after the 11am Parish

Eucharist

The Annual Meeting is an important moment in the life of the church, as we celebrate God’s goodness to us in the past year, elect lay leaders to work with the clergy in setting the direction of our mission and ministry and have an opportunity to ask questions of the Vicar and Officers of the Church Council.

This year is particularly special because it will be a chance to hear about the vision and plans we have for the next five years of the life of our church, as we present the Mission Action Plan 2020-25for your comment and consideration.

We will conclude our meeting with a glass of something and some nibbles

2020 Elections

This year we need to elect:

4 Members to serve on Battersea

Deanery Synod (and the PCC)

2 Members to service on the

Giving To St Mary’s

We invite and encourage everyone who considers St Mary’s their spiritual home to make a financial

contribution to our work.

The best way of doing this is through setting up a Standing Order, so that your giving doesn’t depend

upon how often you are able to get to church.

To do this, just use these details

The clergy are always ready to visit, or to offer confidential pastoral care. Please contact them directly. If you hear that a member of the parish is unwell or needs a visit or a call from one of the clergy, please let the clergy know. They may not have heard and are grateful to be kept informed.
