SUNDAY THOUGHT Luke 2:22-40
On this Feast of the Holy Family, it’s good to
remember how important respect is in family life.
Without it, there is no family. With it, a family will be
healthy and strong. Unfortunately, respect is not always
the easiest virtue to maintain in a family setting.
Relationships are often subject to a lot of wear and tear
in families. What is needed to foster respect in our
families is the willingness to look at each other with
new eyes. This enables us to continually see the other
person in new and exciting ways. Year after year there
are changes in each of us – emotionally, physically, and
spiritually. If we fail to see these changes and
continually hearken back to the old images that are no
longer true of a person, soon what we see is a stranger,
and not a loved one who simply has grown. While if we
look again at each other with new eyes, allowing
growth and change to take place, we will constantly be
surprised and pleased by what we find. Taking Jesus,
Mary, and Joseph as our model, let us reverently and
respectfully embrace one another for the ever new and
changing individuals that we are.

THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH DECEMBER 31, 2017
CELEBRATING THE SAINTS
Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat, Foundress (1779-1865)
Madeleine was a cooper and vine grower’s daughter from Joigny in the Burgundy region of France. Her brother, Louis, eleven years her senior and a priest, educated her at home in Latin, Greek, natural science, mathematics, Scripture, and theology; an education girls of her age and time were not expected to receive. Madeleine readily accepted his strict regimen and excelled in her studies. With Louis, Madeleine went to Paris in the wake of the Reign of Terror at the time of the French Revolution. There she met Father Varin d’Ainville, who became her spiritual director and drew Madeleine into the work of forming a community of women to give girls the same education that boys were receiving from the Society of Jesus. When twenty-three-year old Madeleine, the youngest of the group, was named superior, she at once knelt and kissed the feet of her sisters. Madeleine spent her remaining sixty-three years leading the Society of the Sacred Heart. With humility, practicality, and great tact, Madeleine fostered the congregation’s missions to four continents and received into the Society Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne’s foundation of the first free school west of the Mississippi River. Through rapid growth and repeated crises, Madeleine maintained her adherence to prayer. “Go to the Heart of Jesus,” she advised her sisters, “and draw from it, and when you need more, go back to the Source and draw again.” She also said: “For the sake of one child I would have founded the Society.”
Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat died at the age of 85 at the general motherhouse in Paris on Ascension Day, May 25, 1865. She was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1925 and her feast day is May 25th.

CONTINUING IN THE SPIRIT
OF CHRISTMAS
All women of the parish are invited to a service project and fireside chat hosted by the Women’s Faith
Ministry on Wednesday, January 17 at 7 p.m. in the Hospitality Room. At that time we will take up a collection of new warm clothing, such as hats, gloves, scarves, socks, etc. These are the most needed items during the cold winter months and will be donated for the homeless who are served at St. Malachi. If you cannot attend, a box marked WFM WARM CLOTHING will be located in the hospitality room until the 17th for those who wish to donate. While sipping your favorite hot beverage, we will learn more about this long-standing ministry in Cleveland, share the history of Benedict Joseph Labre, patron Saint of the homeless, and join together in fellowship and warm conversation. As always, feel free to invite other women outside the parish. Your RSVP and phone number are needed by Monday, January 15 by calling the parish office at (440) 842-
2666 or by emailing [email protected].

APOSTLESHIP OF PRAYER INTENTION JANUARY
Religious Minorities in Asia: That Chr istians, and
other religious minorities in Asian countries, may be
able to practice their faith in full freedom.
Religious liberty is a hallmark of our
American system. In Canada and the United States,
such liberty is enshrined in law. It is protected legally,
if not always in practice. The situation we enjoy here
in the United States is not the case universally. In
places across Asia, as we sometimes see in our
society, violations of religious freedom by individuals,
groups, and institutions are of great concern to all
humanity.
The Second Vatican Council, in its
Declaration on Religious Freedom, insisted that all
people have the right to religious freedom. This
includes immunity from coercion on the part of
individuals, groups and any other influence: no one is
to be forced to act in a manner against his beliefs, in
private or public, within reasonable limits.
A Catholic vision of the right to religious
freedom is grounded in the dignity of the human
person, that dignity being know through reason and
the revealed word of God. As it is enshrined in law, it
is a civil right, but it is firstly a God given right. This
vision of the human person, made in the image of
God, our Catholic “anthropology,” is one of the most
important contributions Catholics and other believers
can bring public dialogue and discourse, and to the
debate in the public square.
In this month’s intention, the Holy Father asks
us to pray for the freedom of those in Asia to exercise
this fundamental freedom, one which many of us here
might take for granted.
SEMINARIAN OF THE WEEK Let’s promote vocations by praying for
our diocesan seminarians.
Please pray for Michael Viator.

CATHOLIC GLOSSARY Dogma: Dogma is a truth revealed by God in Sacred Scripture or Sacred Tradition, and proposed by the Church for the belief of the faithful. All dogmas must be believed by the faithful. Examples: the Trinity, the Resurrection, the Ascension, the Immaculate Conception, the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
HEY CATHOLIC! DID YOU KNOW…
Did you know that dogma is the highest form of teaching in the Catholic Church? The content of dogma is so important that it must be believed by all Catholics. The Solemnity of Mary Mother of God is a dogma declared by the Council of Ephesus in 431AD. In giving the Blessed Virgin the title Mother of God, the Church recognizes both the full divinity and full humanity of Jesus Christ. Good stuff.

THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH DECEMBER 31, 2017
MARRIAGE AND FAMILY “But the most beautiful thing that God made, the Bible says, was the family. He created man and woman, and He gave them everything. He gave them the world! Grow, multiply, cultivate the earth, make it produce, make it grow. He presented to a family all of the love that He made in this marvelous creation… All of the love that God has in Himself, all of the beauty that God has in Himself, all of the truth that God has in Himself, He gives to the family. And a family is truly a family when it is able to open its arms and receive all of this love.” — from Pope Francis at the World Meeting of
Family 2015.
Family life is good because God is good.
LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA
Please check out our new selection of CDs on the Lighthouse Media display. The Feature selection this week is, Signs of Life:
Catholic Customs and Their Biblical Roots.
In this informative and dynamic presentation, Dr. Scott Hahn guides us to deeper faith through the Old Testament historical roots that underlie Catholic beliefs and practices. Dr. Hahn clears up common misconceptions about specific liturgical rituals and traditions, and responds thoughtfully to the objections raised about them.
PRAY FOR VOCATION MASS Plan to attend the monthly 1st Saturday Mass on January 6, 2018 at 8:00 a.m. to pray for priests and religious and to ask for an increase of vocations. Please join us on Saturday, January 6th.
