ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA CHURCH LORAIN, OH

When most people think of Saint Francis of Assisi

they envision a tonsured man in a brown robe playing

with animals in grassy meadows. But, that is hardly an

accurate portrait of Saint Francis. Yes, he certainly did

have a tender side, but mostly St. Francis of Assisi was

hard as nails. He took his faith very seriously and ex-

pected others (especially members of his Order) to do

the same. After all, this is a man who faced down an

Islamic Sultan back in the day that there was open war-

fare going on between Muslims and Christians. As I said, Saint Francis of Assisi was a man who

was very serious about his Catholicism. One of the less

emphasized aspects of his life was his dedication to the

Eucharist. This fact has been on my mind this week as

we celebrate the 1st communion of our 2nd graders this

weekend. In his final words to his followers, the most

pressing issue on the mind of Saint Francis was not

poverty, not obedience, but proper reverence for the

Eucharist. He was more incensed by dirty altar linens

and unclean chalices than mistreatment of the poor or

breaches of the peace. In fact, Saint Francis was an in-

novator in the area of Eucharistic piety, insisting upon

the importance of genuflecting at the elevation of the

Host at a time when priests were only required to

bow. The bottom line is that proper respect for the Eu-

charistic was a cornerstone of his own faith, and he be-

lieved it was essential for all Christians to embrace this

as well. How reverent are we when we come into the Eucha-

ristic presence of our Lord? Do we come before the

Eucharist with reverence and awe, as our 2nd graders

will when receiving their 1st communion? Do we ap-

preciate the indescribable and undeserved gift that is

God, Himself, given to us under the appearance of

bread and wine? Do we genuflect when we come into

the presence of Christ when entering our Church pew?

Do we chew gum or eat candy at Mass before receiving

our Eucharistic Lord? Do we honor the 1 hour Eucha-

ristic fast before receiving communion (yes, that’s

right, that is still an expectation for all Catholics…we

should not eat 1 hour before reception of communion to

show our hunger for God)? Do we attempt to receive

communion in our hands while trying to juggle our

children, purses, umbrellas, coats, hats, etc.? All of this

shows whether we truly understand, appreciate, and

have reverence for the Eucharist. May we all have the

reverential spirit of Saint Francis of Assisi when ap-

proaching our Eucharistic Lord.

~Rev. Edward J Smith

MY GIFT TO GOD REFLECTS HIS GENEROSITY TO ME.

FIRST COMMUNION PRAYER Dear Jesus, through bread and wine at the Last Supper, and by your holy word,

you gave the Eucharist to your church. You transformed common food and drink

into your Body and Blood, and offered us a share in your life in ways we still can-

not fully understand. Grant now that these young people will always treasure the

gift they have in you. Give them the grace to be faithful to you and to remain in

communion with your church. As they receive their first Communion, the Bread

of Life and Cup of Salvation, make them always aware of the hope they have for

eternal life in you. Amen.

God Bless our First Holy Communicants!

NEW ALTAR SERVER TRAINING Anyone interested in becoming an Altar Server will need to attend a New Altar Server Training &

Parent Orientation on Saturday, April 28th at 11

am in the church. Any questions please contact Alan Brailer at [email protected].

“But it is my wish to make many

small bridges across the divide that

would carry me through my sacra-

ment to satiate the hunger of man whom I

love so madly that I made myself helpless and

all my bridges. But behold my little bridges.

My beloved bridges are falling down. Go and

repair them by making my sadness your sad-

pain, my loneliness, yours.”

PRO LIFE THOUGHT OF THE WEEK

Each week, we will look at the reasons why the

Pro-Life Movement will win!

Reason #2: The flow of conversations is virtually all in one di-

rection. . .that is, from death to life. Have you ever heard of a pro

-life advocate become pro-abortion (other than possibly a few

politicians who are notorious for abandoning principles in ex-

change for votes)? Yet, there are thousands of doctors, nurses,

technicians, security guards, etc. who have worked at abortion

clinics and who have repented and who are not staunchly pro-life.

Reason #3: Another clear sign of progress is the wave of women

who are speaking out about how they regret having had an abor-

tion. The “Silent No More Awareness Campaign” provides an

opportunity to share the testimonies of these brave women and

they reveal that instead of “solving” a problem, abortion creates

more problems of its own. Moreover, these testimonies put pro-

abortion lobby in a huge dilemma because for years, they have

been saying “Listen to the voices of women!” Now, those

women’s voices increasingly repudiate the lie of abortion.
